Cracking Up. "In interviews with a number of White House
staffers who were willing to talk off the record, a picture of an
administration under siege has emerged, led by a man who declares his
decisions to be “God’s will” and then tells aides to “fuck

administration."

Cuba Cracking Down On Internet Use
Cuba Cracking Down On Internet Use
01/09/2004 09:50 PMTwo years ago, we had an article about the things people in Cuba
needed to do to
access
the internet. It usually involved buying "access cards" on the
blackmarket and then dialing up from home where they have access to
some (but not all) websites. As it stands, it's almost entirely
illegal for Cuban citizens to get on the internet. Well, it seems
that some folks in the Cuban government have decided that even this
amount of sneaky internet access is too much, and are
starting
to block dialup access to the internet over their phone lines.

Cracking Iranian codes
06/15/2004 10:17 AMBruce
Schneier has written an interesting article discussing the
accusation of Ahmed Chalabi of informing Iran that the US had broken
its codes and when Iran knew that the NSA was cracking their codes. He
digs into the history of Crypto AG, the NSA and Iran. He links to an
article about Hans
Buehler, the Crypto AG salesman who was arrested by Iran in 1992
on suspicion that Crypto AG had installed back doors in its encryption
machines. There is no conclusion, but this story reminds me of Crytonomicon and the
interesting world of information, misinformation and spying.
Microsoft cracking down on pirates?
Microsoft cracking down on pirates?
09/18/2004 06:53 PMToday is
talk
like a pirate day and the crazy folks at Microsoft UK have issued
a light-hearted press release having a jab at those who use pirated
Microsoft products. Although the press release is a joke, Microsoft
recently started an optional
Windows Validation process on their download
servers. At recent conferences before the release of XPSP2 several
Microsoft representatives have hinted at possible PID blocking on
other Microsoft applications. In simple terms if you have a pirated
version of Windows XP and you install an updated application like
Windows Media Player, that application will detect your pirated
install and will not install. There are also rumours that Microsoft
are cracking down on the pirates themselves. Earlier this week
the largest seizure of counterfeit Microsoft
software and components took place, worth $80 million. For now
the pirates are laughing but it looks like Microsoft are beginning to
laugh and I'm sure they'll have the last laugh.
MS Press Release:
"Here be monsters
Avast ye, scurvy knaves, beware of piracy!
September 19th in the year of our lord 2004: Ahoy there! Avast ye on
Talk Like A Pirate Day!1 Those who sail aboard the good ship Microsoft
have a warning for those bilge rats who make choppy the calm seas with
their knavish software tricks.
Because those who try to take the piracy off the high seas and onto
their PCs face a fate worse than walking the plank. For they risk
cursin' their businesses and being left up a creek without a paddle.
They be sinkin' too with no patches to shore up systems, and could
catch something far worse than scurvy.
Captain Alex Hilton, of the good ship Microsoft, says: "A lack of
swordsmanship and sailing skills will leave the landlubbers high and
dry."
So, on Talk Like A Pirate Day heed this tale of woe and do not bring
the pirates tricks to your PC, for here be monsters. Yaaargh!"

US Army wants "wise" G.I.s
US Army wants "wise" G.I.s
06/02/2004 12:10 PMSpotted on Noah Schachtman's DefenseTech blog today:
Soldiers of today need to new "skill sets. to function effectively
under high-stress and other emotionally-laden circumstances," the Army
says.
"These conditions are sometimes associated with interpersonal
transactions but may also emerge as reactions to fast-paced,
high-demand events and situations." The best way to determine whether
a grunt has these skill sets or not: gauge his "emotional
intelligence," or EI. It's made up of four abilities, according to the
Army: "the perception, management, expression, and utilization of
emotion."
The military is asking companies for ideas on how to put together a
new, "comprehensive personnel management and training system" that
would assess and build "an individual's ability to recognize, express,
react and manage emotions associated with these interpersonal events
and emotionally-laden circumstances."
Similarly, the Army would like to find leaders "who possess the wisdom
to extend their expertise and values beyond service interests." But
right now, it doesn't have an efficient way to find out who's wise and
who's not.

Wise Cory
12/23/2003 06:50 PM I'm fond of these words of wisdom from Cory: The last twenty years
were about technology. The next twenty years are about policy... I
have a special request to the toolmakers of 2004: stop making tools
that magnify and multilply awkward social situations An important note
for 2004: stop trying to build an Internet without malefactors,
parasites, freeriders and inefficiency. See you next year, Cory. Or,
more accurately: If you're Cory and you're reading this, then it is
net year....
