Disagreement Over Security Status

Disagreement Over Security Status 12/05/2003 01:54 PM
Speakers at Wi-Fi Planet alternately bashed and then praised Wi-Fi security: That's to be expected as the bashers are folks like Intel who don't have a stake in the security game and the defenders are vendors like Cisco that do. Security is getting better but it's not yet simple or good enough yet to spur a massive uptake in the enterprise market....

Notes from Brian's MySQL Replication and Clustering talk at the 2004 MySQL User's Conference... 3.23.xx had single threaded replication, 4.0 had dual-threads to implement read-ahead replication (trivia note: that was my idea). Understanding the control files: master.info, relay log, binary logs, etc. Be careful of things that do not replicate properly, such as a UDF that generates random numbers. It's possible to have different storage engines on the master and slave. Brian's slides are impossible to read if you're not...

OCLC refines its ISBN-clustering service

OCLC refines its ISBN-clustering service 02/13/2004 10:45 AM
Python hacker and OCLC chief scientist Thom Hickey has updated me on the xISBN project:
Just thought I'd let you know that we've put up a new version of the ISBN database. We've done a lot of work to pull works with variant titles together (which helps with The Innovator's Dilemma) and made the retrievals consistent, so that any ISBN in a group retrieves that same ISBN group (which also helps with I's D). We've learned a lot about how ISBNs are used (and misused).
Thanks for the update, Thom. Sure enough, my original examples now work as advertised. Here's what Thom was referring to:
There are a few caveats here. First, the one-to-many algorithm doesn't seem to be fully bi-directional. In the example above, we'd like to get from 0066620694, a paperback, to 0875845851, a hardcover. But although we can get from 0875845851 to 0066620694, we can't get from 0066620694 to 0875845851. [Jon's Radio: Multi-ISBN LibraryLookup]
Those two links didn't used to yield the same set of ISBNs. Now they do. Cool! ...

119 students who failed courses get group email: 119 kids are failing out of the University of Kansas, and now they all know each other.

The students were notified earlier this week that they were in jeopardy of having their financial aid revoked. The e-mail sent Monday by the Office of Student Financial Aid asked for additional information to determine if they were still eligible for aid.

The e-mail address list included the names of all 119 students, with the result that everyone on it could see the names of all the others.

As I announced, we focused on people who are maintaining nodes in the distributed podcasting community directory in our current round of testing. Nick Starr who maintains the AudioBlogs category has already managed a successful conversion. For the most, people were editing their OPML by hand, now that they have an editor whose native format is OPML, the job gets easier and the quality of the output goes up.

I tend to cackle while I work at my computer. Nothing earth-shaking here. This is about as important as the observat ion that I'm more popular than Jesus. Sorry James, no smiley.
