Warners ask MP3 bl0g to post their music
08/11/2004 02:44 AMWarner Brothers is working
with an MP3 blog called Music For
Robots, encouraging them to post tracks from its catalog.
The Secret Machines - Nowhere Again. I know what you're saying. The
Secret Machines, this is old news. Well, actually, it's not. This is a
new development, because not only do we have permission to post this
track, but Warner Brothers Records contacted us and wanted to help
out. Crazy, right?

keeping track of sexy/weird crap you can do with cellphones.
MobileWhack is all about that mobile handset, palmtop, hiptop, ipod,
or laptop in your pocket, purse, briefcase, or dangling from your
utility belt. It's about squeezing every last ounce of mobility out of
your mobile device.

Music On The Mobile Phone
05/06/2004 12:55 PMUnderstanding the mobile music market these days seems a bit
challenging. While the industry is surprised, but thrilled, that kids
who won't pay for downloadable music online are shelling out much more
money on snippets of songs for downloadable ringtones, it's unclear if
that market can last. While the going is good, however, wireless
carriers are starting to more actively
push for
"ringback" tones, which are what people hear when they call you
and are waiting for you to pick up the phone (instead of the standard
computerized ringing you normally hear through the phone). While, in
the past, some have found this
confusing (you don't expect to hear music when you call someone, you expect to
hear "ring ring"), ringback tones are apparently tremendously
successful in places like South Korea. Still, if you want to be even
more confused, a new study found that
most
people have no interest in paying to download music to their phone
- no matter how much it costs. It's not that they're against paying,
as many would pay for other content on their phone, it's just that
they don't want to pay for music. So, the question is whether or not
this is consistent with reality? Are these people who say they won't
pay for music on their phones not buying ringtones? Or do they
somehow consider ringtones (and potentially ringback tones) different
than "music," and therefore worth shelling out? Also, a single
snapshot may not be useful. People may not want to buy ringtones
until they see that all of their friends have done so already. Still,
the large number of people who seem very against the idea of paying
for music for their mobile phone might be a warning sing that things
like ringtones and ringback tones are something of a fad that may not
last.

Pocket mobile music meshes?
Pocket mobile music meshes?
06/04/2004 10:46 AMBoingBoing reader
Modesty
says,
The dream of sharing and streaming the music (and files)
on your PDA/Phone to other PDA/phones, while tuning into your fellow
train passengers' playlists is finially here.
The app described here wraps up a little web server with file
sharing/streaming code, and auto-detects others running the same. So
if you're on a bus, walking or whatever, you can pick up tunes from
other passing people, and they can pick them up off you, all very
easily (if they stick around long enough).
Now all I'm looking for is a method to borrow CPU cycles from them at
the same time. Sure they can listen to my music, if I can use some of
their CPU time in return. And if my PDA is sitting doing nothing, why
not let them run a few calculations on it?

Will Mobile Phones Save The Music
Industry?
Will Mobile Phones Save The Music
Industry?
01/27/2004 12:40 PMHere's a meme that's been growing rapidly over the last six months or
so:
mobile phones will
help save the music industry via things like ringtones.
Certainly, there's plenty of evidence that lots of people (generally
the younger market who is considered the "Napster Generation") have
been willing to pay for ringtones. However, what amazes me about this
is that people seem to ignore history. Mobile phone platforms are
increasingly being pushed to open up, and creating a file sharing
service for ringtones is easy enough. The one thing that ringtones
have going for them is that (unlike with the regular music industry)
there's already authorized downloads offered. Still, assuming that
ringtone file sharing for free won't occur seems to be a bit short
sighted. Besides, it's still difficult to figure out how long
companies can get away with charging people to make their phones ring
differently.

Now It's Time To Blame The Record Lables
For Screwing Up Mobile Music
04/15/2005 12:47 PMIt was just last night that we were saying that the mobile phone
operators were going to
screw
up the mobile music market with their greed... though we also
noted that the recording industry was just as bad, and that the two of
them together, guaranteed a disaster. As if on cue, News.com comes
along to confirm this, with a story about how
the record labels are pissed off at
Steve Jobs because he won't let them
raise
prices or force people to buy a bad song to get a good song.
Instead, of course, they want to work with the mobile carriers, "The
(wireless) carriers' economics are aligned with us much better than
Apple is aligned with us." By which the anonymous executive means
they're both incredibly greedy and willing to sacrifice long term
viability for short term profits. This is like watching a massive
train wreck in incredibly slow motion.

Shocker: People Realize That Mobile

Shocker: People Realize That Mobile
Carriers Won't Make Money From Music
04/15/2005 04:49 AMFor quite some time, a bunch of folks have been pointing out that the
mobile phone operators are being somewhat idiotic in their belief that
they
they
can be music and media moguls. They got this idea in their head
once ringtones started to take off, and rather than thinking they
might just be a fad, both the music industry and the mobile operators
start drooling over how much money they think they're going to make --
when neither of them seem to actually understand the other's business
very much. While the theme of the last few months in the mobile world
seemed to be unquestioned acceptance that "content is king" it appears
the backlash is starting, as even the folks at Business Week are
realizing
the mobile operators will
never make much money by selling music directly. The article
points out what everyone always seems to forget. Even for Apple, the
clear leader in selling music online,
selli
ng music is a loss leader. In other words, the carriers would do
better to team up with someone (such as Apple) to handle selling
music, and they should just be happy with the increased usage. Of
course, instead of that, the operators are complaining that
iTune
s on phones will take revenue away from them. And, of course,
this doesn't even touch on issues like network over-capacity and the
fact that
people don't
want different music services on their phones and on their
computers. Between the recording industry and the mobile operators,
about the only thing you can bet on is that both industries' short
term greed, and total lack of understanding of what users want, is
likely to screw up any offerings for quite a few years.

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PMUSA Today is claiming that the
rules have changed for resumes, now that they're
mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get
into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us
learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results
from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make
it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant
terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to
make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover
letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and
don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so
much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they
don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as
the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the
biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you
spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time
when people were told to send out
fewer resumes? If anything,
it seems like this strategy is the
wrong strategy in the
digital age where HR folks are
so
inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to
paper
resumes is much more effective in getting attention.

The book begins with a chapter of precise guidelines that serve as
a checklist of the features and functionality to include on your home
page. The specifics found in categories such as "revealing content
through examples" and "graphic design" will quickly hook you and whet
your appetite for more. These guidelines are followed up with hard
statistics and an examination of the ominous Jakob's Law: "Users spend
most of their time on other sites than your site." Here you'll find
some interesting statistics about how various conventions like search,
privacy policies, and logos are used.
All this leads up to the showcase element of the book--a systematic
deconstruction of 50 of the most popular home pages on the Web. The
authors painstakingly pick apart each in an uncompromising autopsy of
usability. Each site is graphically analyzed for its use of real
estate and summarized with the frankness only found from true experts.
Then each section of the home page is bulleted and analyzed for
potential improvements.
