MSI Bluetooth Star USB Hub Review
(Verdict: Worth It)
03/29/2005 11:24 AM

bluesoleilhub.jpgTrustedReviews shows us MSI's Bluetooth Star Hub, a combination USB 2.0 hub and Bluetooth unit that's rather stylish while including some easy-to-use software for tracking your myriad Bluetooth devices. Called BlueSoleil, the software from IVT Corporation makes adding and managing BT devices a simple affair. The device supports up to 7 Bluetooth devices simultaneously and includes three USB ports. The only concern that TrustedReviews had was its flickering blue LED which was something of an annoyance. It sells for roughly $50.

Actiontec Wireless Net Camera Reviewed
(Verdict: Worth It)

actiontec_net_cam_54.jpgHardware Pacers has an exceptionally detailed (albeit slightly fanboy-sounding) review of Actiontec's 54Mbps Wireless Network Camera, including a full rundown of the install process and loads of screenshots. Their overall impression was that the camera worked perfectly—it was simple access from a web browser and the video stream was great, at least at the 320x240 resolution. They noticed what they termed a dramatic slowdown when bumped up to 640x480, so it effectively becomes a question of exactly how much detail you want in your voyeuristic indulgences. Regardless, it's a small, easily mounted camera with a built-in microphone and email-capable motion detector for just about $200. Not too bad a deal.

SwissBit Victorinox retroALOX 1GB
Reviewed (Verdict: Worth Its Weight in
Nazi Gold)

swissALOX.jpgI had not realized that Victorinox had upgraded their Swissbit USB key/Swiss Army knife combo, but Trusted Reviews got their hands on one and proclaim it a winner. It's got a new look, obviously (the new model is called the 'retroALOX' but I don't know my knife history well enough to tell you if that means it's based on an older knife or not), but also is a USB 2.0 part, making for much faster fills of its 1GB storage.

Plus, I happen to think that Victorinox has the best pocket scissors around, even compared to the Fiskars that come on the Gerber multitools.

Oh, I almost forgot the best part. You can take out of the USB key now, meaning you don't have to leave your data at home when you got on a plane. Smart. Update: And apparently, not a new feature. Still!

panasonic_oxyride.jpgPanasonic's new disposable batteries, called 'Oxyride,' look fantastic. PC World tested some and got over twice as battery life over a set of Duracell Ultras, which coincidentally enough cost exactly the same. It sounds like we've got a new favorite battery. (Thanks, Gordon!)

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/images/s5500_zoom.jpg" alt="s5500_zoom.jpg image" width="145" height="150" class="right"/>PhotographyBlog has posted their review of the FujiFilm FinePix S5500 Zoom, and they have given it a rating of "doesn't blow too hard." Though the reviewer is a fan of the increased ISO speed options and enhancements to some other areas of the camera, he doesn't seem to like the "Zoom" part of the S5500 Zoom. The 10x optical zoom may sound like a fancy number, but he goes on to say that it doesn't exactly take the cake when it comes to focusing quickly.

Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 8300 Review
(Verdict: Need More Info)
03/19/2005 02:45 AM

oc_joey.jpgThe AP has a review of the latest Scientific-Atlanta DVR, the Explorer 8300, available in some Time Warner Cable areas. The two-tuner unit's most unique feature is probably its ability to steam content back over the in-house cable network to up to three other set-top boxes. All in all it sounds pretty promising, but as is standard operating procedure for company-provided DVRs, you should probably hang tight until the guys at AVSForum have had a few months to put the 8300 through its paces.

Also mentioned in the article is that Lawrence, Kansas, is one of the test markets of Diego's Moxi set-top boxes (Sunflower Cable?). I had a chance to play with a prototype a few months back and it was pretty fantastic. I'm looking forward to the reviews from those users. (Thanks, Vic!)

Firefly Phone Mini-Review (Verdict:
Great For Kids)
04/01/2005 09:28 AM

firefly_narrow_1_.jpgMobileburn talks about their brief hands-on experience with the Firefly kids cell phone in this piece. We first saw the Firefly last month and noted then that it lacks a standard numeric keypad, instead limiting the user to a "Mom" key, a "Dad" key, and a phonebook which can store up to 20 preset numbers. The phone was "a breeze to use, and certainly was entertaining to look at," according to the guys at Mobileburn and may potentially have some appeal in the senior market. Swappable faceplates and a prepaid system make the idea of handing a cell phone to your preteen a bit more palatable. The Firefly is available now for $200 which includes 1200 nationwide (GSM) minutes for the year.

bt800_rev.jpgFor the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge, which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though, Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

Five-Star Review of iMac G5

Five-Star Review of iMac G5 09/21/2004 02:37 PM
Awarding the iMac G5 five stars, PC Magazine writes, “Pros: Simple, stunning all-in-one design. Quiet. Just one cord (for power), thanks to optional Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. More compact than other all-in-one desktops. Gorgeous 20-inch screen and desktop-caliber hard drive make machine more usable than a desktop-replacement notebook, for the same money and space use… Bottom Line: Apple has another design coup on its hands with the Apple iMac G5. Its clean, simple look — imagine if an iPod grew into a full-size, self-contained PC — exclaims, ‘It’s about time they designed a computer like this.’” [Sep 21]

Review: Belkin Bluetooth mouse 09/23/2004 09:57 PM
I've been looking for the ideal Bluetooth mouse almost as long as I've had my PowerBook G4. Unfortunately this isn't it. I chose the Belkin bluetooth mouse for its price and number of buttons, and because Microsoft's Bluetooth IntelliMouse isn't compatible with Macs.

The Belkin mouse is fairly large, but is very comfortable to use if you're right-handed. If you have a computer with Bluetooth built in, you won't need to use any adapter with it, which makes it more convenient than regular cordless mice.
