to 46% - April 2004 Bandwidth Report
The US has narrowed Canada's broadband lead to 9.2%. US broadband
penetration grew by 12.2% to 46% over the past year, while Canadian
broadband adoption grew just 3% to 67% over the same time period.

there may also be a limit to the level of broadband
penetration.

Multifaceted history of the Mac from

Multifaceted history of the Mac from
Andy Hertzfeld and co
01/26/2004 10:15 AMThe Folklore project is legendary designer Andy Hertzfeld's
collaborative undertaking to collect anaecdotes from the birth of the
Macintosh from the people who were there when it went down. Multiple
perspectives illuminate the subjetivity of memory and the way that
things are different from different points of view. (The back-end is a
new software project meant to allow for folkloric collection and
organization regarding any subject).
The first time we went to lunch, I found out that Burrell's creativity
extended beyond his engineering work. He would often try to convince
our waitress to concoct variations of the standard fare on the menu,
thinking of something different every time.
For example, after he successfully persuaded a waitress to divide his
pizza toppings into thirds, he asked her to do fifths the next time.
Or he would sometimes try to order mixed sodas as if they were
cocktails, in ever varying proportions, like three quarters Coke, and
one quarter Sprite. Often, the waitress would balk but Burrell was
sometimes charming enough to eventually convince her to comply. He
would also obsess on certain foods, becoming fixated on Bulgarian Beef
sandwiches from Vivi's for a while, and then a Pineapple Pizza phase
(see Pineapple Pizza) , evolving to his most enduring favorite, sushi,
which provided a new range of interesting choices and combinations.

Andy Rooney Yells At Bill Gates For
Computer Power Button Placement
11/17/2003 02:06 AMAndy Rooney is known for complaining. That's his schtick. He's not
known for always getting the complaint right, however. In his latest
set of complaints he's
blaming Bill Gates for making his computer suck. He
might be completely right on that front... However, he has two
specific complaints and one of them has absolutely nothing to do with
Microsoft of Bill Gates. He complains that the power button on every
computer he's bought has been in a different spot. That may be true,
but it's certainly not Bill's fault. His second complaint is an old
joke that has been forwarded around by email for ages, about how odd
it is that you need to press the "start" button to "shut down". He
does have one good quote concerning the fact that you need to keep
buying new computers, while typewriters would last forever: "I had one
typewriter for 50 years, but I've bought seven computers in six years.
I suppose that's why Bill Gates is rich and Underwood is out of
business."

Quixtar and Google-Bombing
Quixtar and Google-Bombing
04/07/2005 09:28 AMQuixtar Blog: Quixtar Admits Google Bombing:
Quixtar, a subsidiary of Amway, is apparently celebrating a
coordinated Google-bombing and
search engine spamming campaign. One of their people — some guy
named Greg Duncan — boasted about it on stage in front of
thousands of people. Probably not wise.
Quixtar is waging an aggressive Google Bombing campaign in an
attempt to manipulate search engine results. The primary component of
the "Quixtar Web Initiative" is specifically designed to exploit blogs
in an unprecedented manner.
Unlike businesses that utilize a few blogs to communicate with
employees, associates and customers [...], Quixtar has hired
"geekoids" to manufacture hundreds of blogs designed to confuse
information seekers.
(Ironic twist: the link above is to what appears to be an
anti-Amway and anti-Quixtar site. Check the Google ads. They're for
products and services to help you become a better Amway rep.)
