Version of Windows by January
12/24/2004 12:25 PMOn Wednesday, the European Court judge overseeing the European Union
vs. Microsoft antitrust case did what many observers thought he would
not. He denied Microsoft's request that the ordered remedies
(including the unbundling of Windows Media Player from Windows) be
postponed. Whether or not Microsoft appeals his denial, the Redmond
software giant said it will deliver to European OEMs starting in
January a Windows-Media-Player-free version of Windows. Microsoft also
will publish communications protocols, including some
heretofore-unpublished Windows Server ones, as part of the judge's
order.

to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for

support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ

Microsoft To Rename Media Free XP
02/01/2005 09:40 PMMicrosoft have agreed to change the name of "Windows XP Reduced
Media Edition."
The European Commission have asked Microsoft to rename the media free
edition after fears that the name would discourage people from
purchasing the edition. The name is now unknown and Microsoft and EU
officials are working together to come to an agreement on the new
editions naming scheme.
The media free edition of Windows XP is due to be released in February
within Europe. Microsoft recently accepted the EU decision which meant
that the company has to ship an edition of Windows XP without Windows
Media Player. As well as stripping Windows Media Player from Windows
XP, Microsoft has been ordered to reveal essential APIs to rival
software companies like Apple and RealPlayer.
