Here's a picture of a public toilet in Switzerland that's made entirely out of one-way glass. No one can see you in there, but when you are inside, it looks like you're sitting in a clear glass box. I don't think I'd be able to go. Link (Thanks, DocX!)

Software lets Macs handle Windows Media
Video 9
12/22/2004 01:48 AM
It took a relatively small California company called Telestream to bridge the video creation incompatibilities of two PC giants. Apple's Macintosh computers maintain a stronghold in video editing, thanks to their art department-friendliness, a long legacy of use in Avid and competitors' video equipment and Apple's own professional software, Final Cut Pro. While Apple has carved out a video production niche, Microsoft has been trying to control video distribution through its Windows Media Video 9, which is currently popular for Web video, but also has the potential to be used for portable entertainment, DVDs, and even cable-TV distribution. Microsoft recently donated WMV9's codec, called VC-1, to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), hoping to also make it a TV industry standard.

People Search

People Search 04/22/2004 06:51 PM

We've been thinking about and working on a People's DNS.  So this piqued my curiosity.

Tickle Searches People. Tickle, the matchmaking/social networking site, announced today a new People Search feature that lets you find people based on keyword search. The site uses the plethora of data it has on its 18 million registered users to correlate people to search terms. I spoke to CEO James Currier yesterday, and tried out the service a bit to boot. It's a neat idea, but a bit ... odd to see people matched to terms. Take a gander at a search result for "mortgage" for example. And here's what "lawyer" looks like with "everything" chosen - web, people, and sponsored results. The search works much better if you are a member, Currier said. The engine will then search for folks based on your search term, then correlate... [John Battelle's Searchblog]

Developers who possess deep but tacit knowledge of complex hardware and software environments are notoriously unable to project themselves into the beginner's mind. Observation is the only way to bridge the gap. [Full story at InfoW orld.com]
This story grew out of my ongoing experimentation with capturing both live video and screen video. These technologies motivated two columns< /a> and a series of related blog entries (1, 2, 3). When I got interested in this stuff, months ago, I figured there ought to be a market developing around it. As it turns out, that's happening. One of the products featured in this story -- TechSmith's Morae -- shipped in March. The other, UsersFirst's VisualMark, is just entering beta. Both are harbingers of what I expect will be an emerging trend: the pervasive use of live video and screen video, in combination, to observe and analyze how people really use (or fail to use) software. ...

A guide to VoIP and Asterisk

A guide to VoIP and Asterisk 06/05/2005 10:53 PM

With its low price, VoIP has become an attractive alternative to traditional landlines. The possibilities seem endless: you can set up virtual numbers, toll-free numbers, use softphone applications to call from your PC, even make calls from your home phone when on the road. While basic VoIP service can provide some of these features, the open-source PBX application Asterisk allows you to configure your phone system to your heart's content.

[Asterisk] supports VoIP in all three flavors: SIP, h323, and IAX. It also supports a wide range of hardware that allows you to terminate your Asterisk PBX from a POTS line to a T1.

Confused by the alphabet soup? This guide will bring you up to speed on VoIP lingo and help you to get your home or small business network up in no time flat.

Screenshot Asterisk is a hybrid TDM and packet voice PBX (Private Branch eXchange) and IVR platform with ACD functionality. It acts as middleware between the Internet (IAX, SIP, MGCP, Skinny, H.323), telephony channels (like Zaptel, T1, PRI, E1, FXO, FXS, VoIP, VoFR, ISDN, modems, Internet Phone Jack, etc.), and applications (like voice-mail, conferencing, directories, MP3 players, intercoms, etc.). It has many advanced features such as a codec translation API. The base distribution includes several channel backends, as well as applications. However, the beauty of Asterisk is its ability to be extended using its APIs, dynamic module loader, and AGI scripting interface. End users can even write their own applications that run on the system in C or any scripting language of their choice.
