Clear Channel Cuts Commercials To Just

Clear Channel Cuts Commercials To Just
Most Of The Time, Instead Of All
07/19/2004 02:51 PM
I tend not to listen to very much radio at all, but when I do flip around the dial, it does seem like commercial radio these days is pretty much all commercials, all the time. Well, it looks like Clear Channel is starting to realize that while they may own all the radio stations out there, they're facing competition from satellite and internet radio (as well as people listening to their own music via CD players and digital music players). So, today, they've made a big splash by announcing that all of their radio stations will now have fewer commercials -- though, they don't say by how much. Of course, if you read between the lines, the announcement is also stating (though, not explicitly) that in doing so, Clear Channel is also going to raise advertising fees. They're trying to limit supply to push up the price, but this is coded as: "more effective opportunities and value for their advertising dollar."

Clear Channel Hopping On The Podcasting
Bandwagon
03/25/2005 09:47 PM
In the midst of lackluster growth as a result of declining revenue from its radio ads, Clear Channel announces that it is revamping its online strategy. While this story does reek of a "hey, we're still going to work everyday" release, there are a number of interesting bits. Not only will Clear Channel be offering free live web concerts, but they also will be dabbling in podcasting. While Clear Channel's five-minute ad-supported podcasts are a good gesture, they don't really seem to get the whole point of podcasting. Podcasts allow users to listen to what they want to hear when they want to hear it. After listening to a Clear Channel podcast, if you want to hear more, then what? Too bad for you, because most likely the show already aired and there's no way to listen to the rest of the show. This doesn't sound so much like podcasting as it does a way for Clear Channel execs to think they're on top of these new cool things when they're actually making themselves look silly.

Clear Channel Playing Dirty with Bands

Clear Channel Playing Dirty with Bands
selling Music
05/25/2004 07:05 AM

Let's say you and your buddies don't know how to play musical instruments and yet you decide to form a band. You open your garage door and play like there is no tomorrow. The police come and actually shut you down because it was so bad that all your neighbors have complained. Now imagine you have recorded that music and offer it immediately for-sale to anyone that wants to purchase a
copy of your horrid noise. Several days later you get a notice from Clear Channel saying you have to purchase a license in order to legally sell that music immediately after each show.

Is this not the most ridiculous things you have ever heard. Well it seems Clear Channel is squashing popular bands that want to sell immediate recordings of concerts they have just performed. If your willing to buy a license to do so then you are good to go. The audacity of doing this is shocking. [Techdirt]

Clear Channel Buys Concert Recording
Patent, Tells Bands To Stop

Clear Channel Buys Concert Recording
Patent, Tells Bands To Stop
05/25/2004 04:03 AM
Just as more bands have been realizing the power of offerin g instant concert recordings to their fans, you knew the industry would somehow figure out a way to kill this new, growing business model. Submitted by someone anonymously, comes this story, that tells us that some company actually had a patent on making instant recordings of concerts for sale - and radio giant Clear Channel has now purchased that patent. Of course, now that they have it, they're cracking down on many bands that want to offer such recordings. They claim they want to be "artist" friendly, but are looking at it from a business perspective - meaning stamping out the competition and selling licenses to any bands that want to offer immediate recordings to their fans. It's amazing how the industry continuously finds ways to use intellectual property protections to harm new business models, rather than to let them help grow the overall industry. Of course, once again, you have to wonder what exactly is patentable here: it's basically a CD burner. Why does selling concerts via a CD burner immediately after the show need a special patent?

Just to be clear - after lauding Om 03/28/2005 08:45 AM

While we're on the subject of lauding Om, he seems to be a little confused over my contradictory attitude towards BrightCove.

How can I on one hand "compare them to Atom/Shockwave" and then declare them the winners?

Well remember - it's Accel Partners money - and boy do they have a lot of money to spend - so that's why I referred to a war of "attrition" - cause I just wanna see Jeremy spend Bud Colligan and Joe's Schoendorf's money - like there's no tomorrow.

Clearly Brightcave has a hell of a challenge to pull off what they're trying to do - but someone has got to do it. And Jeremy is actually a really nice guy, so..... good luck to BrightCove!

After last year's Directory Experts Conference (put on by NetPro in Ottawa), HP's Wook Lee became a minor celebrity for his haiku (and senryuu, see "An ode to an identity management problem," link below), which he used to brighten up his talk on "Active Directory Restore Mode" (without the humor this subject would be guaranteed to put people to sleep). Could he top that this year? Indeed he could, both in subject matter as well as in doggerel.

concrete2The Associated Press has an interesting article about the translucent concrete developed by Hungarian architect Aron Losonczi. During the mixing process, glass fibers are added to the traditional stone, cement, and water. This enables light to shine through the material. Several variations of the new material are on display as part of a National Building Museum exhibit called Liquid Stone: New Architecture in Concrete. Judging from the Web site, it looks to be a stunning exhibit. Link (to AP article) Link (to Liquid Stone) (Thanks, Gabe!)
