Sony has been ordered to pay over $90 million in damages over a patent infringement lawsuit and was also issued a permanent injunction against the manufacture, use, sale, or import into the U.S. of PlayStation consoles, Dual Shock controllers, and 47 games that infringe on the patents. Immersion Corporation was awarded $82.0 million in past damages, along with pre-judgment interest in the amount of $8.7 million by the court for the technology Sony used that makes a game controller vibrate in sync with actions in games. Sony's gaming unit, Sony Computer Entertainment, plans to appeal the decision made by the California court on Thursday.

Sony Computer Entertainment is set to unveil a smaller version of the PlayStation 2 on October 26, according to industry reports. Dubbed "PStwo," the new console will be 30 percent smaller, but retail for the same price. Sony reinvigorated sales of the original PlayStation by making a smiliar move with the smaller PSone console. ps2
imageContinuing with Sony's announcements, NE Asia brings word that the company plans on using Playstation 2 chips inside of new flat panel TVs to be introduced this Fall. This announcement has confused many as it counters what Mr. Playstation himself, Ken Kutaragi, stated in an interview during September of last year - that "it is not the time for those rocks (PS2 chips) to be going inside of televisions." Maybe he's changed his mind in a year?

All we can do for now is speculate, but the prospect of a TV with integrated PS2 is sweet. For now, however, the chips "will improve the TV's image processing capability." Damnation.
