The second round of The Players Championship lasted all of 44 minutes before rain saturated the Stadium Course and left half the fairways unplayable. Nearly seven hours later, officials had no choice but to send players home until 7 a.m. Saturday and figure out what to do next.

[This is an edited version of the talk I gave last fall at the State of Play conference.] I'm sort of odd-man-out in a Games and Law conference, in that my primary area of inquiry isn't games but social software. Not only am I not a lawyer, I don't even spend most of my time thinking about game problems. I spend my time thinking about software that supports group interaction across a fairly wide range of social patterns. So, instead of working from case law out, which has been a theme here (and here's where I insert the "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer) I'm going to propose a thought experiment looking from the outside in. And I want to pick up on something that Julian [Dibbell] said earlier about game worlds: 'users are the state.' The thought experiment I want to propose is to agree with that sentiment, and to ask "How far can we go in that direction?" Instead of looking for the places where game users are currently suing or fighting one another, forcing the owners of various virtual worlds to deal with these things one crisis at a time, I want to ask the question "What would happen if we wanted to build a world where we maximized the amount of user control? What would that look like?" I'm going to make that argument in three pieces. First, I'm going to do a little background on group structure and the tension between the individual and the group. Then I want to contrast briefly governance in real and virtual worlds. A new Haaretz.com article gives a detailed account of the 12th World Computer Chess Championship which was held last month in Bar-Ilan University Israel. The article notes that there wasn't really much for the humans to do. "During the competition itself we are the computer's robots. We do what it tells us" says Shay Bushinsky, creator of Deep Junior, one of the chess programs. The article also goes over some of the history of chess-playing machines. David Pescovitz: BB mourns the passing of Donald James Leslie, the inventor of the Leslie Rotating Speaker that provided the Hammond organ with its signature sound. The "Le slie" speaker spins inside its cabinet at a constant speed around a fixed point, providing an unmistakable Doppler effect. From the Associated Press obituary:

Leslie was captivated with the sound of the Hammond organ when he heard it at a Barker Bros. furniture store in downtown Los Angeles, where he worked repairing radios. In the store's large showroom, the organ introduced in 1935 sounded much like a theater or church pipe organ. However, Leslie, was unimpressed with the organ's sound quality in the confined spaces of his home. He began tinkering with devices to make the instrument sound more like labyrinthine pipe organs, using mechanics and electronics experience he gathered from a series of jobs, including one at the Naval Research Laboratories in Washington, D.C., during World War II.
