Roland Piquepaille writes "Computer scientists from the University of Bath have written a software which transforms your ordinary photographs and movies into cubist works of art and animation reminiscent of Picasso. They trained their software to identify important elements of a face, such as a nose, eye or mouth, until the computer learned how to recognize them on its own. This was achieved by giving the software a kind of 'aesthetic sense.' Then, by "using photographs of a subject taken from multiple points of view, the software automatically picks out important areas within the image, which are cut out as chunks. The chunks are statistically shuffled and a few of them randomly selected and distorted into a 'cubist' composition ready for digital painting." The software is not yet publicly available, but software and animation companies have expressed interest. My blog contains additional references and images."

Detecting Photoshop Hacks

Detecting Photoshop Hacks 07/29/2004 06:47 PM

For Doctored Photos, a New Flavor of Digital Truth Serum: A group of folks out at Dartmouth College are breaking new ground in the art of detecting if images have been altered or not. You just can't believe a picture anymore. Especially not on this site.

For example, when two images are spliced together — like the picture of a shark attacking a helicopter that has circulated around the Internet in the past few years — one or both of the original pictures usually has to be shrunk, enlarged or rotated to make the pieces fit together. And those changes, no matter how artful, leave clues behind.

Take a picture that is 10 pixels by 10 pixels, for a total of 100. Stretch it to 10 by 20 pixels, and image-editing software like Adobe Photoshop will assign the picture's original pixels to every other slot in the new picture. That leaves 100 pixels "blank," or without values. Image-editing software fills in the gaps by examining what their neighbors look like, and then applying an average. To oversimplify, if pixel A is blue, and pixel C is red, the blank pixel B will become purple.

Smugmug Online Photoshop

Smugmug Online Photoshop 03/19/2005 02:22 AM

Why would anyone pay $29.95 for an online photo album? Well what if it gave you a smooth and beautiful interface, unlimited photo storage, and huge photo size limits, the ability to backup your online album, your users can download the original size photo which you uploaded and the ability to upload 100's of photos at once. Upload from your cellphone, and never see any ads or spam pop-ups.  Oh yes, post photos to blogs and forums, password protect the embarrassing ones, and monitor visitors to the site that has your own vanity name. That's just for starters.

Smugmug gives you as much as you need. They offer three levels of membership starting at $29.95 with the Pro level at $99.95 which allows you to run your own online store. I will list the levels and the services below, but the one thing you cannot list is the speed, ease of use, and the ability to change the album to your specific look and feel. I love this online photo shop the best of any I’ve found. I know Flickr has been getting a lot of press, but give Smugmug a look-see and let me know what you think.

If you decide to purchase a plan from Smugmug, I can save you $5 on a membership by using this code "t7xidGXRdLOYw" in the referred by field in the signup form.

Software File Sharing Growing As Well

Software File Sharing Growing As Well 01/19/2004 05:05 AM
While the RIAA and the MPAA have gotten all the attention for being "concerned" about all this file sharing, the original "intellectual property" bullies - the BSA (Business Software Alliance) were clearly feeling left out. So, now, they're getting a bit of misguided publicity as they start whining that peopl e are sharing software via file sharing networks as well. There are a few interesting points made in the article. First, among the BSA's tracking tools is a system that allows them to change ISPs every 60 seconds so no one can figure out where they're coming from. If the BSA can do that, why can't ordinary users? How long until regular P2P users have that same ability to "cloak" who they are? More importantly, the article shows just how single-minded and short sighted the BSA is being. The article even quotes one software developer who points out that the unauthorized copies of their software showing up on Kazaa is helping them get attention and builds their market share. That's the main issue. Instead of trying to crack down on file sharing, software publishers need to look at it as a marketing issue. There's a lot more to good software than just the bits that make up the code - and plenty of companies are willing to pay for good software if it comes with important extras like support and upgrades. Meanwhile, with the fears of getting spyware, viruses and trojans via file sharing networks, a good marketing campaign would convince any user who would normally pay for the software that the downsides of getting software off a file sharing network probably aren't worth it. Instead, the BSA is going to waste a lot of money to try to shut down file sharers who are unlikely to do anything that negatively impacts the bottom line of software publishers.

File-Sharing Software Firms Warned (AP) 08/05/2004 09:09 PM
AP - Attorneys general from 45 states sent letters Thursday to seven companies that offer online file-sharing software, hinting at possible legal consequences if the networks don't better inform computer users about potential copyright violations from sharing files.

Judges rule file-sharing software legal

Judges rule file-sharing software legal 08/19/2004 03:07 PM
A federal appeals court has ruled that file-sharing software is in fact legal. The panel noted that file-sharing companies simply provide the software for individual users to share information. Therefore, they cannot be held accountable for what users share, be it a word document or copyrighted material.

While developers of file-sharing software are rejoicing about the federal appeals courts ruling, the RIAA and MPAA are steaming mad. This ruling has dealt a serious blow to the two industries, but they have vowed to continue the fight. They have urged a re-examination of the law, and will undoubtedly proceed with an appeal. However, they still face the same old problem : unlike Napster, new file-sharing networks don't have central servers where computer connect to access copyrighted material. This technique makes file-sharing networks like Sharman and Stream cast even harder to shutdown.

If this ruling had not gone through (i.e. the RIAA / MPAA won), several file-sharing developers would have had to face the possibility of further legal action. Right now, those file-sharing developers (Grokster Ltd, Stream cast Networks Inc. and Sharman Networks Ltd.) are in the clear. The situation is such that the RIAA & MPAA won't stop until file-sharing is a thing of the past : read - they'll never stop. Problem is, you can't shut down file sharing networks with legal action.
