Xeni Jardin:
BoingBoing pal and inimitable code wizard
David Weekly is in Ghana this
weekend with a group called Camp Amelia -- teaching young African
people about I.T. and science basics. Cool! Snip from project website:
On September 1, half a dozen American educators, engineers and
university students [departed] for Accra, Ghana to run a pilot project
for Camp Amelia, a children's summer technology literacy program
already made popular on the North American continent. The team,
composed mainly of Stanford students and alumni and funded by grants
from Microsoft Corporation and Chicago's Beck Foundation, will be
coordinating with local schools, government, and businesses to provide
technology education for underprivileged students ages 8-11 in the
greater Accra area. Camp activities run the gamut from using soap
bubbles in explaining physics to engaging in "Internet scavenger
hunts" and using interactive educational software programs developed
by Camp Amelia technology teams. Participants will learn how to use
word processors and even the basics of computer programming! These
elements will teach the children the value of independent thinking and
learning.
And here's a note from David, having just arrived in Accra on
September 3:
So I'm writing this from a computer lab in Accra; it's nicely modern,
with about 50 pentium 4-2000 machines, but it's about 1500ms to
anything really interesting on the Internet backbone and the speed's
not that fabulous. But it works! And while we were hoping to have 50
students for the camp, it looks like we actually got more like 150
applicants; so we're actually having to select which student we'll
take, which is bittersweet. The plane flights over were pretty brutal;
a 10 hour flight from SFO to Amsterdam and a six and a half hour to
Accra. I woke up this morning at four AM local time (having gone to
bed at midnight) and was *wide* awake. Now it's 11am local and I'm
feeling like I need to sleep some more. It's kind of wacky. We'll be
working on setting up the camp's curriculum and so forth; the camp
starts Monday! Keep your fingers crossed for us. People are friendly,
the city is insane with traffic and potholes and vendors and goats...

science, technology and mentorship."

I wrote a comment elsewhere that was memorable but not
exactly right, so
I'll post it here as a note to myself.
Being fearless without being peerless is a formula for tragedy.
Maybe some of my quotes will make it into the book of quotes
someday. :-)

Fair Use and Misuse
08/27/2004 01:58 PMHere is a very worrisome problem concerning fair use. It has to do
with a dichotomy long noted by legal thinkers between the law on the
books and the law in action. They often diverge. And fair use is an
example of this divergence. As I said in an earlier...

Just How Many Wireless Technologies Can
You Misuse In One Shot?
06/17/2004 02:54 PM
We've seen a lot of stories recently about overhyped wireless
"security holes" or "exploits" for both WiFi systems and mobile
phones. In almost every case, the story would get a lot of press, but
the actual risk was extremely low. The discoveries (and subsequent
publications) were mostly designed to get attention for some random
security researcher who discovered the supposed problem. Well, now
that the obvious security attacks are out of the way, security
researchers need to get a bit more creative. They can no longer just
pick on a single technology (Bluetooth? WiFi?) and find a security
hole. Now, they need to get with the converged times and go for a
combined attack. That's about the only explanation I can come up with
for the announcement of
this new "vulnerability" that makes use of Bluetooth, WiFi and SMS
all in one shot. The article doesn't do a great job of explaining
the attack, but apparently, it works by having someone
"bluejack"
a> one of the few phones that are vulnerable to bluejacking (and which
haven't been patched), using that connection to send an SMS to an
"anonymous prepaid phone" owned by the attacker. They can then use
this to determine if (just maybe) the vulnerable phone is a
T-Mobile customer. If it is, they then hijack the vulnerable phone
again, and send an SMS to T-Mobile to get login info for hotspots
(since T-Mobile now lets users get hotspot login info via SMS). If
the user is not a T-Mobile customer, there are other options, but
they're equally convoluted (sometimes involving another associate with
another mobile phone sitting at a hotspot). The group that put out
the warning admits there's no evidence that this has been done, and,
honestly, it really seems like a security hack for show more than
anything else. Of course, now the bar has been set. Who will top it
and give us the useless, unlikely security hack that involves
four different wireless technologies?

Direct Hacking Down; Virus Problems,
Wireless Network Misuse Up
08/05/2004 12:12 PMThe latest study on computer crime and security shows that, for the
first time in a while,
direct
attacks on corporate information systems are on the decline --
from both inside and outside the company. In fact, it appears there
was a significant decline in insider's attacking corporate systems.
Of course, that's because they're all abusing the WiFi. It's not at
all clear how an insider in the company is likely to be "abusing" a
wireless network set up by the company, but the report suggests it's
an "emerging threat." Meanwhile, the biggest issue for most companies
remains virus attacks and the fact that whatever anti-virus software
they're using doesn't seem to work. At all. Either that, or they
can't convince their employees not to click on random attachments.
Well, in that case, at least we know it's
the
executives who are screwing up.
