New Worm Travels by IM

New Worm Travels by IM 08/20/2004 02:35 PM
According to researches at PivX Solutions a new worm has surfaced, but this one travels via instant messaging. This worm has been labeled as the next generation of the Scob worm, this new worm has already started to infect Web sites in Russia, Uruguay, and now the United States.

This worm has the same basic instructions as a worm called "Scob" or "Download.ject." Back in June Scob attacked un-patched Windows 2000 systems running IIS Version 5. This was done by exploiting a buffer overflow vulnerability in Microsoft's implementation of the Secure Sockets Layer. This 'next generation' of Scob sends instant messages containing the following text "Check out my new home page!” followed by a link. This message can be sent from your either your friends or strangers. The link provided in the message takes the user to several attack Web pages where a Trojan horse program is downloaded.

As is the case with most worms/viruses Microsoft has already released a patch. If you keep up to date with your 'Critical Updates' then your machine should be fine. However, PivX has yet to determine the total amount of damage that this worm inflicts. Recommending that even if users have applied the necessary update not to click on the link. Especially if their system was previously infected with the Scob worm.

Exotic Travels 06/05/2005 11:56 PM

I promised a friend to take her for an excursion by private airplane to a foreign country where they speak a strange tongue unknown to 97 percent of the world's population.  She readily agreed.  We folded ourselves into the four-seat propeller-driven single-engine Cirrus SR20 and entered the clouds above Hanscom Air Force Base near Boston.  We didn't see the ground again until about 600' above a long runway amidst a cold rain-soaked landscape.  "Welcome to Quebec City," I said to her.

[Tip for dogless travelers:  the Auberge St-Antoine is truly a fine hotel in the old city.]

Cory Doctorow: I've been travelling nonstop for a couple years now, shooting pix of various amusing, pretty or outre things as I go. I find myself with hundreds of photos that I took basically because I thought it'd be funny to show them to friends, but I never do.

This morning, I used Flickr's Uploadr tool for OSX to upload about 160 of them, tagging them with some metadata as I went. It was a pretty neat experience, reliving all those moments. I'm gonna try to keep my public Flickr library up to date on this stuff from now on. Link

The Evolution - and Future Travels - Of Search Technology
http://www.acmqueue.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid =148

In this trip down the Memory Lane of information retrieval -- or search -- technology, author Ramana Rao begins at the beginning, with an excerpt from a 1945 Vanity Fair article titled "As We May Think" that foretold the image of a scholar aided by a machine: "a device in which an individual stores all his books, records and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility." Today, when some 25 million Web searches an hour are conducted, that vision is quickly becoming reality. Rao finds that, across the decades, two dichotomies stand out clearly in the evolution of search. "The first is the contrast between focusing on the one hand on narrowly defined technological approaches and on the other hand on a broader understanding of the full problem set and the possible solutions. The second is the contrast between working out ideas in research versus spreading them commercially." Essentially, the longstanding challenge has been matching technological capabilities to real information needs. Rao concludes that the "semantic Web," may eventually come to pass, but only with the birth of systems that support human-computer symbiosis.

When you plug in the StealthSurfer and use its customized version of the Netscape browser, the device stores the cookies, U.R.L. history, cache files and other traces of your Web browsing that would ordinarily accumulate on your computer's hard drive. When you're done surfing, you unplug the drive and take the records of your travels with you.

Oregon Governor Travels in Wi-Fi
Equipped "Beaver Patriot"
11/10/2003 10:55 PM
A fully-loaded RV will allow Oregon governor Ted Kulongoski to travel beyond the I-5 corridor and meet with constituents while still carrying out his office's business: I grew up in Oregon, and while the state has population centers around Portland, Salem, Eugene, and Grants Pass, a big chunk of the state is reachable only through small highways and farm roads using passes crossing coastal and inland mountains. The RV uses satellite for its connectivity and Wi-Fi within the vehicle. A business lobby has provided the vehicle, but it's awfully hard to see how there are any ethical problems given that the connections are completely exposed: this isn't a backroom deal, and the RV was made by an Oregon firm. (Kulongoski is the first politician I ever stumped for when he ran for office back in the 1980s; he lost.)...

Africa for $100 with National Geographic
04/13/2005 05:46 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Michael Slavitch says: "Want to know where your ancestors really came from? $100 and a cheek swab will tell you.

"National Geographic has developed a five-year genographic study where participants can join in and track their genetic lineage to a common African ancestor. The $100 test will tell you the route that your ancestors took and when, and both the DNA and genographic results will be made available to individual participants on the net. Very very cool."

Genographic Images Journey Step3 When your results are ready Project Director Dr. Spencer Wells will introduce you to your earliest human relatives—the members of your specific haplogroup. You'll receive a personalized genetic analysis, including an online overview of your deep ancestral history. The analysis reveals where and when your haplogroup originated and how they lived. You'll also receive a dynamic map, specific to your lineage, on which to trace your relatives' journeys across the planet.
