Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing

Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing
01/08/2004 08:41 PM
One of the very good complaints about online music stores is that they offer all songs at the exact same price - which doesn't make much sense in the market place. So, one company is trying to test that out by offer ing dynamic pricing for its downloadable songs. The songs all start at the low low price of $0.10 per song, and then fluctuate based on demand. The company is still paying the $0.67 per song price to the music labels, so they're losing money on plenty of songs - but are saying that's the cost of the experiment. After they've spent the amount they've set aside, they'll go back to the old way of pricing. There are a few problems with this. First, explicit dynamic pricing tends to get a negative reaction from consumers - who feel they get ripped off when someone else bought the same product from the same store at a lower price. More importantly, though, true market pricing isn't just a function of demand - but of supply and demand. In this case, there's an infinite supply, so we're not really talking about market pricing at all. Furthermore, this service competes against plenty of other services that charge around a dollar for songs, so there's a clear upper limit on what they can charge for any song, no matter how popular. An interesting experiment, certainly, but not necessarily indicative of market pricing.

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor
Internet Usage
06/08/2004 06:31 PM
If there's one thing that's obviously available in bunches on the internet, it's "bad information." However the Vietnamese government has decided that "bad information" (which they seem to believe is anything they don't agree with, or anything that portrays them in a negative light - this post, for example, would probably qualify) is illegal and must be stopped online. They've now told local governments to start monitoring internet usage and have warned internet cafe owners they can be fined or jailed if any of their patrons uploads or downloads "bad information." To help track this sort of thing, they also want all internet cafe owners to "document what Web sites their clients visit and for how long." In other words, it's now prohibitively expensive to run an internet cafe in Vietnam. It's amazing that these sorts of regimes< /a> honestly believe that stopping such info, at the cost of killing off all of the benefits the internet provides, is actually worthwhile.

Internet usage tracker SuperIntendent
comes to Mac OS X
06/17/2004 04:17 PM
Developer Vicomsoft has updated SuperInten dent, a module used as part of the company's InterGate solution, to Mac OS X. While InterGate allows businesses and schools to manage their network connections and Internet firewalls, the SuperIntendent module provides detailed reports of Internet usage. Network administrators can use the module to generate reports by user or IP address, by the types of Web sites visited, by the types of Internet protocols used, and by other criteria. They can drill down through any of the reports to obtain more granular data. InterGate pricing starts at US$99 for five users, with SuperIntendent starting at $349 as a companion module, and scales up from there. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2.6 or higher, a Mac with a G3 or better processor and 50MB hard drive space. A 30-day demo of InterGate is available for download from the Vicomsoft Web site, after you fill out a request form.

Pricing and Architecture of the Internet: Historical Perspectives from Telecommunications and Transportation
ht tp://www.dtc.umn.edu/~odlyzko/doc/pricing.architecture.pdf

With telecommunications in a slump, the search is on for ways to re-invigorate this key industry. The main problems are clearly economic much more than technological, and many of the proposed remedies would lead to new architectures for the Internet that would provide for greater control by carriers. They would drastically reduce the role of the end-to-end principle, the main foundation for the success of the Internet, in which functionality resides at the edges of the network. The proposals to restrict voice over Internet (VoIP) are just one part of this trend.

Historical precedents from telecommunications for introduction of differentiated services and sophisticated charging methods on the Internet are discouraging. The almost universal trend has been towards decreasing price discrimination and simpler pricing. The history of transportation presents a different picture, with frequent
movements towards increasing price discrimination and more complicated pricing (although with many noteworthy reversals). Charging according to the nature of the goods being transported has been and continues to be the norm. Since the incentives to price discriminate are increasing, and the ability to do so is also growing, it is conceivable that telecommunications might break with its historical record and follow the example of transportation. It is therefore of interest to examine the evolution of pricing and quality differentiation in transportation.

Rural internet usage differs from urban:
new Pew study
03/06/2004 01:55 AM

Rural Areas and the Internet , a new research study from the Pew Internet and American Life project , explores emergent similaries and differences between urban and rural internet cultures. Rural internet users tend to be slightly older than their urban counterparts, use machines outside the home and have fewer choices of internet service provider ( ISP ) to connect.

Notably ,

[w]hile the differences are not gaping, rural users are less likely than urban and suburban users to have bought a product online, made a travel reservation, or done their banking online. Even rural users who have been online a few years or more are still less likely to have ever performed transactions over the Web than their urban and suburban counterparts.

Telkom's ADSL Pricing Hampering South
Africa's Internet Growth
01/05/2005 03:13 AM
Telkom’s decision to keep the pricing for its ADSL offerings unchanged for 2005 is a big blow for South Africa’s broadband Internet growth. Last year has seen the price of broadband services plummet worldwide, but South Africa stood out as a country where the price has actually increased. It is regrettable that Telkom has decided not to follow this global trend as it will mean that South Africa will fall even further behind regarding broadband Internet. [PRWEB Jan 5, 2005]
