Global Warming's Silver Lining

Global Warming's Silver Lining 03/28/2005 06:14 AM

Some scientists and academics think Earth's rising temperature is a good thing, especially for people in cold places and those who like large squid. Environmental watchdogs say the optimists have the wrong idea. By David Cohn.

Every cloud has a silver lining, and now
selected foofbags and foofpods do too!
01/05/2005 01:16 AM
foof & dirtymouse contacted me today to tell me that the foofbag and foofpod web sites have been updated with new products. Most notably, the new "A Kind of Blue" foofbag and podbag as well as the new "Linear", "Vertical Limit" and "Tsunami Relief" foofpods come with silver lining. As hinted at by the name of that last foofpod, some of the foofpods purchased will have $10 USD donated to the Australian Red Cross Tsunami Appeal. Also new are the "Super Brown Extreme" and "Magma" foofpods which come with the standard black liner. What is a foofbag? What is a foofpod? They are awesome whimsically handmade Powerbook, iBook and iPod cases. You gotta have one.

Both hurdles were roundly discussed during sessions at the recent OSDL Enterprise Linux Summit, but there appeared to be no easy answers nor easy solutions to either licensing issue.

It offers several ways to adjust variables and make comparisons while modeling a lining, including the ability to drag and drop materials onto different heat calculations, automatic adjustments for face and ambient temperatures, support for ASTM and metric units of measurement and more. Its database structure allows you to store and edit various lining materials and you can import them from other applications and export them for use elsewhere. Refractory Lining Thermal Modeler is £169.95 (US$316.07) and runs in Mac OS X, although Hotwork Ltd. doesn't specify the minimum version number required.

My brother just opened up his very first CafePress store! His current design is a parody of the 24Hr Fitness design, called 24Hr Fatness. I have one of his shirts, and let me tell you something, Curly, it gets quite a response from the ladies.

I asked Jeremy to tell WWdN readers why he made the shirts, and here's what he had to say:
I did it because I was tired of seeing the 24Hr Fitness employees walking around who were more out of shape than me trying to be all like "hey, you should join 24Hr Fitness so you can get into shape". Yeah, whatever tiny, you have cheese on your lip.

I just hope that Cafepress leaves it up there, they have a thingy about not selling things that resemble other products. So we'll see. If they sell and it gets taken down then I'll do it my damn self! Jenn [his wife] and I are going to be working on a bunch more stuff too. Jenn has the "Party Monkey" and "Drag Monkey" line she's been doing for fun for years.

The Golden Age of Silver Age comics

The Golden Age of Silver Age comics 12/15/2003 04:26 PM
I discovered Jack Kirby around 1972 (with KAMANDI) and quickly devoured his comics from the previous decade, especially Fantastic Four. Here's a nice NYT article about 1960s comic books that sums up why they're so great.
Just as Mr. Infantino's Flash had captured the gung-ho futurism of the late 50's, illustrators like Kirby and Mr. Ditko brought an appropriately darker, grittier and sometimes spaced-out look to Marvel's pages in the mid-60's. The Fantastic Four spent a lot of time on the Lower East Side, where Kirby had grown up. Mr. Ditko's hallucinatory illustrations for the mystic Dr. Strange had a direct impact on the psychedelic art that bloomed a few years later. In "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test," Tom Wolfe reported that the LSD guru Ken Kesey spent hours studying Dr. Strange comics with acid-inspired probity. Rock-concert posters also lifted the character's image.
