Boston-area bank suggestion? (Bank of

Boston-area bank suggestion? (Bank of
America is not dog-friendly)
06/22/2005 02:23 AM

My bank has been purchased, for about the fifth time.  Currently it is called "Bank of America."  None of the previous changes of ownership or name bothered me but this time the new color scheme came with "no dogs allowed" signs in the front of every branch office.  I'm not sure that I can stomach 0.2% interest if I can't have a dog at my side to provide some comfort as inflation and corporate looters erode my turbine-powered helicopter fund.  Anyone have a suggestion for a dog-friendly bank in the Boston area?

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Central Bank Research Hub
http://www.bis.org/cbhub/ind ex.htm

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has established this facility to promote the search and dissemination of economic research published by central banks.
The facility is built on the principle of crawlers that search research content from selected central banks websites on a daily basis. The Research Hub e-mail alert will keep its users informed about new research published on any of the websites of the participating central banks. Subscribers to the free e-mail alert can select specific topics and reception frequencies to keep their e-mail volumes under control.
The BIS hopes that this facility will make research work on central banking topics more widely accessible to the central banks and the academic community at large. This has been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to Academic Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.

The Promise of XML Realized

The Promise of XML Realized 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
Microsoft's Jean Paoli, the architect of Office 11's XML support, was co-editor of the XML 1.0 specification with Tim Bray. The first thing Paoli showed Bray was that any existing .doc file can be saved as XML — specifically, as WordML, which expresses both the style and the content of the document in pure XML. "When I showed that to Tim," Paoli remarked, "he was jumping for joy."

Gmail's new promise

Gmail's new promise 04/15/2004 02:16 PM

I can't believe how much flak Google is getting over gmail. Hotmail and Yahoo feature 5 or more obnoxious ads on every page view, plus advertising in each and every mail they send out, but Google creates a better version of web mail and we have state representitives introd ucing laws to ban the service before it even launches.

Has the whole world gone crazy?!

They've gone and updated their policy at gmail, and it boggles my mind that they even have to go to such great lengths to explain how their subtle ads aren't the new red menace.

They should introduce a new promise for gmail users. Every message that gets sent to a gmail account will result in a kitten getting petted one time. They could rival the old fishcam at Netscape, by having a big room with a kitten-petting robot showing everyone how much love the kittens are getting from the PetBot2000. And remember, no humans would be involved in the kitten petting.

Would that make things better finally?

Nanomemory Research Shows Promise

Nanomemory Research Shows Promise 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

nano_stuff.jpgHere comes the science-speak: Existing volatile memory (i.e. RAM) is stored in capacitors that hold electrons in two distinct states and must be recharged several thousand times per second, because the electrons tend to leak out. Researchers at Philips Research Laboratories in the Netherlands have developed a new method for high-capacity, static (non-volatile) RAM that wouldn't require a constant refresh. Applying pulses of electricity in varying degrees to a material known as antimony telluride can cause its atoms to either line up or sink back into chaos. Switching between an amorphous and crystalline state, a computer can differentiate between the two because of the crystalline state's significantly lower electrical resistance. We briefly explain the advantages over current flash memory after the jump.
