Microsoft is off the hook with the European Union Commission - at least temporarily. The Commission has frozen the implantation of its remedies through the length of Microsoft's appeal. Had it gone into effect today, the EU order would have required Microsoft to distribute a version of Windows that did not bundle Windows Media Player.

stiffer remedies
11/05/2003 08:37 AM
The antitrust settlement between Microsoft Corp. and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) needs to be amended because it doesn't ensure competition between Microsoft and its rivals, the state of Massachusetts and an IT industry group argued Tuesday. Microsoft should have to release the code for its Internet Explorer (IE) browser and allow original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to make any IE functions invisible to end users, argued Steven Kuney, lawyer for the state of Massachusetts, before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Microsoft?
04/07/2005 05:57 PM
US legislators are debating whether to force Apple's products to interoperate with Microsoft's. The Congress have been considering a plan that would outlaw music protected by proprietary digital rights management (DRM) technology, such as Apple's FairPlay, which stops iTunes downloads being played on Microsoft digital music players and vice versa.

However, yesterday's Congressional subcommittee hearing on 'Digital Music Interoperability and Availability', which included debate on mandating interoperability for digital music, received a 'hands off' message from industry representatives. William Pence, Napster CTO, told the subcommittee that the music industry will eventually promote interoperability itself without the need for government intervention.

Experts: Microsoft tweaks, new laws
won't make '04 safer
12/24/2003 02:37 PM
For computer security experts, 2003 started with the Slammer Internet worm and went downhill from there. The year, which included four major worm and virus outbreaks just in August, has been labeled the "year of the worm" and "the worst year ever" by more than one computer security expert.

All that activity meant good news for antivirus software companies, such as Symantec. It was bad news for organizations of all kinds, which expended precious resources disinfecting everything from desktop workstations, to airline reservation systems and automated teller machine (ATM) networks that were hobbled by virus outbreaks.
