AP - In a move reminiscent of the blockbuster buyouts of the late 1980s, seven private investment firms said Monday they would pay almost $11 billion in cash to acquire SunGard Data Systems Inc., the financial software powerhouse known for trading services and creating backup data systems in the event of a disaster.

The Systems & Computer Technology Corporation ( SCT ) was purchased by Sungard Public Sector and Nonprofit Systems for more than $500 million.

No changes of leadership or immediate operations are planned. Formally, for the transfer of ownership to take place, the SCT board's approval is required, and federal antitrust scrutiny passed.

SCT software is widely used by colleges for administrative data.

Sungard has been expanding its educational holdings since 1999. Most recently it purchased the FAME data services enterprise.
