Solving The Online Music Format Mess...
With Another Format?
12/11/2003 02:43 AMNow that every other company is starting a music download store (even
if no one is making any money off of it), people are beginning to
realize that maybe it makes sense to come up with a single format that
works for anyone. Of course, some might say that we've already got
formats that work, but the folks over in the recording industry seem
to have a mental block when it comes to the formats that everyone
likes to use. So, now, Microsoft, Universal Music and others, under
the title of the Content Reference Forum, are
teaming up to create a new music format - but one
that makes it easier for them to make you buy the music. There aren't
all that many details, but it appears to be going back to some of the
very original concepts behind a hypertext system: that content only
needs to be available once, and any time you want to access it, you
just link to it. In other words, instead of offering downloadable
music, the plan is to offer links to music that is served up remotely.
Of course, one of the "features" of such a system is that the content
providers can know (and, potentially, charge you) every time you want
to hear that certain song. It's an interesting idea, but it seems to
make the music
less valuable. Suddenly, it can only be
listened to from an internet connected machine, you don't actually own
anything, and the big content providers get to keep a big database of
exactly what songs you listen to when. Doesn't sound all that
appealing to me. The one thing that it
does have going for it,
is that it allows people to "share" - if, by share, you mean point
someone to a link and let them pay for it themselves.
New music format from Sony
New music format from Sony
11/13/2003 04:07 PMIn an attempt to challenge Apple's current dominance of the exploding
online music market, Sony has announced plans to embed on
copy-protected CDs digital music files which can only be played on
Sony-approved equipment. The files, which are encoded in a
proprietary format, cannot be read by or stored on unapproved devices
like Apple's iPod, but can easily be transfered to an approved
portable device for portable playback. Critics of the plan point out
past failures of copy protection...

Major Music Labels Promote New CD Format
03/20/2003 01:05 PMConsumers will soon see a new digital music format in their local
stores. Called DataPlay
digital media, these news discs are smaller than CDs and represent the
music industry's
latest attempt to distribute music in a copy-protected format. Three
of the top five
record companies -- Universal Music, EMI Group and BMG -- have already
signed on.
Politicians Consider Mandating Single
Music Format Standard
Politicians Consider Mandating Single
Music Format Standard
04/06/2005 06:28 PMPoliticians really like to meddle where no meddling is needed, don't
they? The latest, is that some politicians are responding to
complaints by users concerning all the different digital music file
formats by thinking about
lega
lly mandating music file compatibility. While the industry
has been particularly shortsighted in not setting up compatibility on
their own (the more compatible, the more people can use your system,
the more value the songs have, the more value your system has -- seems
easy enough), the idea that the government should step in and force
compatibility seems like a dreadful idea that would simply stop all
innovation when it came to music file formats. Forcing every music
file format to meet some politically motivated standard will make it
difficult for newer or better file formats to be created. There's
simply no reason the government needs to be involved here.

The Man who Invented Metadata
10/29/2003 12:12 AM I just gave a talk at the first Ascential user conference. I was
talking mainly about how metadata is rooted in human desire.
Afterwards, Bernard Plagman approached me and struck up a
conversation. He apparently is the person who coined the term
"metadata" in an article in 1971. Back when he wrote Data
Dictionary/Directory Systems (Wiley, 1974), it was necessary to argue
that metadata ought to be managed the same way data is. And now, a
short 30 years later, metadata is the new data....

How Japanese-equivalent QWERTY was
invented
03/24/2005 11:29 AMCory Doctorow:
Great history of the early days of Japanese typewriters:
The time was ripe for a Japanese typewriter, but the daunting
structure of the written language, with its multiple scripts and
thousands of characters, stymied early attempts to develop one. Into
the breach stepped inventor Sugimoto Kyota (1882-1972), often hailed
as the Edison of Japan. Sugimoto began by studying the relative
frequency of individual kanji, eventually arriving at a minimum set of
some 2,400 characters (unabridged Japanese character dictionaries list
as many as 50,000).

Totally 80s Weekend
Totally 80s Weekend
04/09/2004 04:00 PMI'm a child of the 80s and I take great pride in it. I've always
scored above average on the various "80s purity test" sites. As a
result, I have a particular fondness for the popular music of the
80s--especially the one-hit wonders that seemed to make up a fair
amount of the Billboard charts. One of the few local radio stations
that I can tolerate (there are exactly four) has been playing only 80s
music this weekend, calling it...

Time Wonders, Who Invented Warchalking?
and Other Howlers
Time Wonders, Who Invented Warchalking?
and Other Howlers
11/10/2003 10:55 PMIn a short piece on warchalking, writer fails the test: The author of
this article in Time magazine finds a warchalk symbol (so he
says...I've yet to see one in the wild), and writes a good, short
piece about it. Good until he notes, Nobody knows who invented
warchalking. This reminds me of some of the lines from my favorite
canceled sci-fi animated series, Futurama, set 1,000 years in the
future. We're in the present, so I type who invented warchalking into
Google, and most of the matches explain precisely, as is well known,
Matt Jones invented it. He designed the sign, spread the meme, posted
a PDF with the graphics in it. I wrote about him and warchalking for
The New York Times, in fact. Hilariously, the 2nd match on Google
right now is this Time article. They have a lot of inbound links does
Time magazine. Time published a huge package of wireless stories about
a week ago. They come off as a little bland to me, because I know
everything that's in them. To an audience that knows little or nothing
about Wi-Fi, I'm sure this sounds much more exciting. But it reads
like circa 2002 newspaper coverage. The articles all have some missed
notes, too, mostly in the technical and statistical details. In an
article detailing business use of Wi-Fi, this statistic is thrown in:
a surprisingly small number of U.S. firms that have installed wi-fi
networks. Fewer than 5% of U.S. workers use them today, according to
an estimate by Gartner, a high-tech research firm. Unfortunately, the
author has confused five percent of workers with five percent of
companies. In this News.com article from a few days ago, the reporter
presents an array of statistics on business use, including overall
industry sales figures, and cites Jupitermedia's number: 57 percent of
businesses are using Wi-Fi already to some degree. (Damn, I even know
that magazine reporter; we worked on our college paper together.)
Given that companies like Microsoft and Novell have thousands of
workers -- basically everyone with a laptop -- using Wi-Fi all the
time all day everywhere on campus, that five percent of all workers is
the mobile, laptop-connected five percent. What percentage of U.S.
workers have computers at all? What percentage have laptops? That
would better contextualize the number. Maryanne Murray Buechner's
pieces, including this FAQ, are quite excellent, offering sensible
accurate advice...
