At Siggraph today, AMD announced that AMD Opteron™ processor-based
servers and workstations are providing the digital backbone for the
final Star Wars prequel, Episode III: “Revenge of the Sith.”
The AMD64 digital processing pipeline at JAK Films, the production
company for Star Wars: Episode III, includes pre-visualization and
pre-postproduction, which involves 3-D match moving, 3-D modeling,
lighting, shading, texturing, compositing and rendering techniques.
The AMD64 processor-based workstation systems are running Microsoft®
Windows® XP Pro, Alias’ Maya and Adobe® After Effects software. AMD64
processor-based file server systems are running on clustered Microsoft
Windows Storage Server 2003 software.
The full adoption of 64-bit capable AMD Opteron processor-based
systems at JAK Films is the result of a long-standing relationship
between AMD and the pioneering Pre-Visualization department at JAK
Films. The relationship began during the making of Star Wars: Episode
II and provided AMD with direct feedback from the world’s foremost
digital content creators. JAK Films is now using AMD64 technology to
reinvent the digital filmmaking process.

In my discussion with Brad Templeton of the EFF, I asked him to
map www.eff.org to one of my servers, and map his original server to
backend.eff.org, so I can filter it.
I'd add links to their content, and see if they object. If that
isn't a problem, I'll start changing the words, and see if that works
for them. Then I'll put my name on their work, I imagine that would be
okay too. Why not? I'm just being creative! Then I'll change their
positions to be more in tune with the entertainment industry.
Somewhere in there, there's got to be a line.
I'm thinking of mirroring Cory Doctorow's Creative
Commons-licensed book and crossing out his name and replacing it with
mine. Then I think I'll go to a printer and print up a bunch of copies
of my book and stand on a corner in Times Square and sell copies.
Maybe a book publisher will offer to distribute it for me. I'll be
interested in talking with them.
Yesterday's Test Cases
Yesterday's Test Cases
03/31/2005 06:43 AM
Regarding yesterday's test
cases, I got quite a few comments about the second scenario, where
I propose that I become the author of Cory Doctorow's web-published
novel, offer it for sale, and seek distribution.
The uniform response was that since Cory's book is offered
under the Creative Commons attribution share-alike license, I
am not "permitted" to change the author's name, or charge for the
right to a copy. I put the word permitted in quotes, because the
responders haven't explained why Cory's work is so-protected and my
work, which is offered under a standard copyright, isn't.
In other words, the responders think there is a line. Aha!
There are some things one is not allowed to do with another person's
work. They said not only is it possible for Cory to opt-out of my
creative rip-and-burn act of 21st Century artistry, but it actually
requires Cory to opt-in! Well well well.
Does this perhaps ring a bell?
And since I haven't heard from Cory, I still wonder if it's
okay with him that I republish his work for money and claim authorship
of it, since I know he doesn't believe in opt-in or out. I
believe his philosophy is "Tough shit."
Also, I haven't heard from the EFF about the proposal that they
let me filter eff.org, replacing links, author's names, correct
spelling, and edit their copy to be more in line with the philosophy
of the entertainment industry.

Sony Ericsson has a new phone
for Japan's au cellular service, dubbed the "A1402S II." It is, as
expected, the successor to the "A1402S." It's a somewhat underwhelming
phone, though, so it better be cheap; prices are not yet announced.
Although it does of course have the Japanese standard (no jealous;
stand proud, America) QVGA (240 x 320) resolution on a 2.3-inch
display, the camera is a mere 0.34MP (so take some heart in that
failing). A cameraless version of the phone will also be
available.
So fine, but why do they get all the pink phones? I clack my claws
down each link of my chitinous sensor braids in protest.

It's not likely
we'll see it over our way, but Japanese carrier has a new Sony
Ericsson handset, the A1402S (perhaps that name has a little more
zing in Japanese). It looks like fairly standard fare, though,
so no need to shed those big crocodile tears like we normally do when
Japan gets a new phone with an 80-megapixel videocamera that cleans
your teeth and punches your grandma all at once. PhoneMag has a few
details, such as they are. One notable thing, though, is that the
A1402S comes with a pretty big selection of swappable faceplates. Not
groundbreaking, but it makes for a nice picture, at least.
