Getting our Mojo at Yahoo? Yeah. And

I've seen numerous folks commenting on Om Malik's recent posting about Yahoo: How Yahoo Got Its Mojo Back. In it he credits several things (including me and Russell--thanks Om!) for a resurgence of interest and appreciation for what we've been doing these last months. And what it also has a couple of guys, I like to call them blog evangelists, who knowingly or not, have brought the right kind of attention to the company. Russell Beattie who recently joined Yahoo...

Javascript Mojo

Javascript Mojo 11/05/2003 02:32 PM

Stuart Langridge has released a couple of very neat new Javascript experiments. sorttable makes any data table on a page "sortable" by clicking the table headers. I've seen this effect used to demonstrate Microsoft's proprietary "behaviors" technology but Stuart's solution has the advantage of being standards compliant and working across different browsers. Best of all, it follows the principles of inobtrusive DHTML and hooks in to the markup using only a class attribute.

Stuart's second experiment, JavaScript Event Sheets, is even more interesting. It tackles the problem of attaching events to page elements. The most common way of doing this is with inline attributes, but these require adding behavioural (rather than structural) code to your markup and can lead to additional maintenance costs further down the road. A better alternative is to use the DOM to dynamically add events, which works fine but means tightly coupling the structure of the document to the Javascript that sets up the events. Stuart's solution is to abstract the logic that attaches events to elements out to a separate file, called a Javascript Event Sheet. This uses CSS style syntax (partially handled by my getElementsBySelector function) to specify how events attached to different elements should be handled. Stuart demonstrates the idea with a common image rollover:

img.rollover {
  mouseover: rollover_handler;
  mouseout: rollout_handler;
}

Stuart's blog entries concerning the two new experiments are here and JavaScript Event Sheets.

please give sketch some mojo

please give sketch some mojo 02/01/2005 09:52 PM

I feel like I'm on a roller coaster right now . . .

My cat Sketch will be eleven years old in April. I've had him since he was five weeks old.

Friday night, I came home from ACME, and he was acting strangely: he was in the hallway (not on my bed where he usually is) breathing very heavily and rapidly. There was something clearly wrong with him.

Saturday morning, I took him to the vet, and she took some Xrays. They showed that his lungs were about 1/2 full of fluid, and none of the vets could figure out why. They think it may be something with his heart.

He spent the weekend at this 24 hour emergency vet, where they gave him some oxygen and some other medication, to help clear out his lungs. They took more Xrays yesterday evening, and there wasn't any significant change.

This afternoon, the vet told me that he hasn't responded to any of the medication, so tomorrow morning I'm taking him to get a cardiac ultrasound. The vet told me and Anne that he should be okay to stay with us overnight, so Anne brought him home, where he can sleep on our bed with us, and be close to his brother, Biko.

I just got back from ACME (the running joke is that I secretly live under the stage there now) and Sketch is in my bedroom with Anne.He's really struggling. He hasn't gotten worse (if he does, I will take him right back to the emergency vet), but he's not getting better, either. If the ultrasound shows that he's got some heart thing that I can't remember the name of right now, he'll get on medication right away, and it should clear out his lungs and put him back together.

But if it's inconclusive, or shows something worse, I'm not going to let him suffer because I can't say goodbye. I hope I don't have to make that decision, and I've been appealing to The Universe all day to give Sketch a natural 20 on his saving throw. Please?

He's such a tough little guy, I never thought that he would get sick like this, and so suddenly. Biko is the runt of their litter, and Felix has been in and out of the vet so many times, they're naming a boat after him . . . but I love Sketch so much, I don't want him to go. It would mean a lot to me if anyone who reads this would take a moment and send Sketch some kitty mojo, especially to his heart and lungs.

You can call him "Tubby," or "Fatty," or "Fat Boy," or "Chunk," too, because he responds to all those names. He's my tubby little guy.

Thanks.

22, 6'4", 140lbs? Yeah, Right... 03/29/2005 06:33 AM
The American Senate is considering bringing in new laws which would require checks on anyone posting on online dating sites, reports AP. The laws, which would cover the state of Michigan, are being backed by dating site True.com, which claims it's the only one to offer background checks. Naturally, then, it has a vested interest in ensuring only those sorts of sites are allowed to operate in the state - with similar legislation being proposed in California, Florida, Ohio, Texas and Virginia.

Of course, the laws aren't really intended to ensure people don't lie on their online profiles or post fake pictures. There is a more serious side - it would require sites to reveal whether they had caried out criminal screening on potential dates. True.com insists there have been incidents where people have been shot, stabbed or scammed by dates they met online. However, rivals say the law would be useless - as people could simply provide a fake name to get around the checks.

A Senate panel has voted 4-3 to pass the bill onto the full chamber for debate and it could now vote in April. For Sandie Cornillie, though, it's just a waste of time. The 46-year-old said she preferred finding dates online as it was less intimidating, more convenient and arguably safer. "It's a very safe way of getting to know someone before we meet face to face," said Cornillie, who has tried online dating for five years. "I haven't met any rapists or any crazy people. It's kind of up to you to be careful."
