Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?

Andy Rooney Yells At Bill Gates For
Computer Power Button Placement
11/17/2003 02:06 AM
Andy Rooney is known for complaining. That's his schtick. He's not known for always getting the complaint right, however. In his latest set of complaints he's blaming Bill Gates for making his computer suck. He might be completely right on that front... However, he has two specific complaints and one of them has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft of Bill Gates. He complains that the power button on every computer he's bought has been in a different spot. That may be true, but it's certainly not Bill's fault. His second complaint is an old joke that has been forwarded around by email for ages, about how odd it is that you need to press the "start" button to "shut down". He does have one good quote concerning the fact that you need to keep buying new computers, while typewriters would last forever: "I had one typewriter for 50 years, but I've bought seven computers in six years. I suppose that's why Bill Gates is rich and Underwood is out of business."

Brown Prefers Wired Connections

Brown Prefers Wired Connections 01/19/2004 01:59 PM
Brown has covered 5 percent of campus with a Wi-Fi network and may build out more but leaders there say the wireless network will never replace the wired: Brown has already wired classrooms and dorm rooms with broadband connections and those are faster than Wi-Fi, says a network admin. Most other universities are much more gung-ho on building out Wi-Fi. This story looks mainly at Rhode Island schools and points to Bryant College which plans to be 100 percent covered this Fall. The University of Rhode Island is working on providing access to 20 percent of campuses used by 80 percent of students....

A month ago, a trial version of a little-known Linux application called "CoLinux" was released that is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively. It's the work of a 21 year-old Israeli computer science student and some Japanese open source programmers; in Israel, analysts are already saying it could help transform the software world.

ActiveWin.com Book of the Day: Breaking
Windows: How Bill Gates Fumbled the
Future of Microsoft
12/03/2003 12:39 AM
David Bank's Breaking Windows offers a scathing inside look at the past few tumultuous years at the Microsoft Corporation. Bank, who covers the company for The Wall Street Journal, bases this well-written tale on interviews he has conducted with most major players (including Bill Gates), along with boxes of e-mails and other documents that "provided an unprecedented glimpse into strategic debates and internal decision-making processes of a company that had long restricted outside access to its insular corporate culture." Through them he shows how Microsoft, which always put software above everything--and in more recent years made Windows its number-one priority--has scrambled and squabbled as first the Internet and then the U.S. government forced major directional changes and significant internal reevaluations.
