Apple Settles with One Tiger
Leaker -- Apple Computer has settled out of court with Doug
Steigerwald, a recent graduate of North Carolina State University and
an Apple Developer Connection member who admitted to sharing seeds of
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on the Internet. Steigerwald will pay Apple an
unspecified amount, but News.com quoted Apple as saying, "It is
not our desire to send students to jail." Legal action remains
pending against two other men in the case, which was filed in December
and is separate from other lawsuits Apple has filed against Macintosh
rumor sites. Steigerwald also still faces a criminal investigation.

03/23/2005 05:20 PMApple Computer has reached a settlement with one of the men it sued
for online distribution of its unreleased Mac OS X Tiger operating
system.
According to CNET News, Apple said it has reached a settlement with
22-year-old Doug Steigerwald. It did not discuss the details of that
settlement, though it does involve money being paid to Apple,
according to Steigerwald. The company still has legal action pending
against two other men in the case, which was filed in December in
federal court in San Jose, Calif.
"While Apple will always protect its innovations, it is not our desire
to send students to jail," Apple said in a statement to CNET News.com.
"We are pleased that Mr. Steigerwald has taken responsibility for his
actions and that we can put this lawsuit behind us."
CNET News says Steigerwald is actually not a student, but a recent
graduate of North Carolina State University who is currently looking
for a job. Reading from a prepared statement, Steigerwald said that a
criminal investigation had been launched against him. In the
statement, Steigerwald said that the allegations made by Apple were
true and apologized for his actions.

AOL Email Leaker Allowed To Plead Guilty
This Time
02/05/2005 09:49 PMBack in December, we noted that the AOL employee who leaked the entire
company's customer database to spammers
tried
to plead guilty, but the judge rejected the plea, saying he wasn't
even sure if a crime had been committed. It appears the judge spent
January catching up on the latest law books, and now agrees that, yes,
a law has been broken, and, yes,
the
guy can plead guilty. He now faces a few years in jail and the
prospect of paying a few hundred thousand dollars to AOL for the cost
of cleaning up the mess he caused.

FTC Settles With Spammers
FTC Settles With Spammers
05/07/2004 02:58 PMLast year (before CAN-SPAM was even in place), the FTC
sued a
couple of spammers for using deceptive subject lines and spoofed
email addresses to send people to a porn site. The spammers have now
settled with the FTC and agreed to
give back $112,500 that they received from the spam. Of course, I
wonder if that's all they really received from the spam. Besides, if
they just are giving back what they made from the spam, then there
seems to be no actual punishment on top of that for spamming. Also,
if the FTC could go after people for misleading subject lines and
spoofed return addresses, why did we need CAN-SPAM in the first place?

Meanwhile, Jack Valenti gets in a bogus quote about how this shows
