Dijjer 0103 (Default branch) 03/27/2005 01:45 PM

Dijjer is a peer-to-peer HTTP cache, designed to allow the distribution of large files from Web servers while virtually eliminating the bandwidth cost to the file's publisher. Dijjer is designed to be simple, elegant, and to cleanly integrate with existing applications where possible. Dijjer's distributed and scalable content distribution algorithm is inspired by Freenet.

Changes:
A serious bug in how the messaging layer waited on multiple messages has been fixed. Failed network connection detection has been improved. This version is a mandatory upgrade.

Network configuration is fetched via DHCP. As the hard disk is processed as an image, any filesystem and operating system can be deployed using g4u. Easy cloning of local disks as well as partitions is also supported.

Open Akamaization with Coral

Open Akamaization with Coral 04/19/2005 12:29 PM
Last week I wondered about the emergence of a grassro ots grid. The other day Brady Joslin pointed me to Coral, a "peer-to-peer content distribution network comprised of a world-wide network of web proxies and nameservers." It's simple to use. Just append nyud.net:8090 to the domain name of any URL. So for example in the meme tracking script I wrote about last week, Brady altered this:
var deliciousUrl = 'http://del.icio.us/url/?url=' + currentPage;
to this:
var deliciousUrl = 'http://del.icio.us.nyud.net:8090/url/?url=' +
currentPage;
The results are usually slower to come back, but as Brady points out, the asynchronicity of XmlHttpRequest can deal with that. ...

in labyrinths of coral caves 09/13/2004 04:20 PM
I know that it's risky to be totally honest, because some people view that as weakness, and attack. But the unexamined life is not worth living, right? If I'm not totally honest with myself, how will I ever learn and grow? Should I stop examining my life now, because I wrote a book about it?

Well, right now I need to examine my life, and I need to be totally honest with myself. I have to own up to something: I *did* hope that my book would get noticed by the Industry. I hoped that it would get noticed by critics, and I hoped that The Media would pay attention . . . but all that happened after it was published. When I wrote it, I hoped that my story would be amusing, interesting, and maybe even inspiring to people.

And you know what? That's exactly what Real People tell me when they read my book: they were amused, interested, and occasionaly inspired.

What a myopic fucking fool I've been! What a stupid, stupid jerkass! I was so worried about impressing The Cool Kids, I forgot who I am, and why I do this. And even worse, I disrespected -- even if unintentionally -- the very people who have been with me on The Journey all along. It's not some stupid magazine that owes *me* an apology; it's *me* who owes all those Real People an apology.

File-sharing app eDonkey comes to Mac OS

File-sharing app eDonkey comes to Mac OS
X
06/29/2004 01:58 PM
eDonkey announced on Tuesday that its peer-to-peer file-sharing software is coming to Mac OS X. Previously, Mac support was available only through a text-based command line interface in the software. eDonkey links every client on the network with each other, allowing them to search within both the entire network and a subset of it. Users can also download files from multiple users simultaneously and automatically continue interrupted downloads during their next session, in addition to the ability to send private messages to other users. The eDonkey application is not finalized for Mac OS X yet, but you can download a Beta of either the free or paid version from the developer's Web site. Both require Mac OS X v10.2 or higher and 64MB RAM; the free version has limited features and displays ads when you use it.

The new algorithms also improved MantaRay's persistency. In order to better align MantaRay with the JMS specification, the receiver can now determine the message acknowledgment mode. In addition, several JMS bugs were fixed in this release. This release may be found here: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=112623&package_ id=122622

An infrastructure was created for different persistency implementations other then file persistency. Documentation was modified in the release as well - a new FAQ document was added to the documentation package and the "User Guide" and "Getting Started" documents were modified according to your input. JXTA Pancakes

JXTA Pancakes 06/05/2005 11:19 PM

One week late last year, on a lark I made a traditional Sunday breakfast: pancakes, bacon, and maple syrup. The kid has on every subsequent Sunday put in a non-negotiable demand for more of the same. The good news is that the pancakes are getting better. The bad news is that learning sucks, and my JXTA pancakes are still kind of burnt and misshapen...
