04/12/2004 03:39 PMPerhaps it was just a matter of time... a Dark Side deck posted on
Rebelbasers revealed the awesome
power of, believe it or not, the "lowly"
Ugnaught. When used in
conjunction with a few other cards, it became quite easy for this deck
(or variations thereof) to leave a Light Side player with nothing but
their initial Setup to go up against a deck that could virtually
replenish itself indefinitely. Click

George W. Bush's latest
TV ads juxtapose
Iraq's and Afghanistan's flags with footage of Olympic sport,
proclaiming, "At this Olympics, there will be two more free
nations — and two fewer terrorist regimes." At a campaign stop,
Bush
said, "just the image of the Iraqi soccer team playing in
this Olympics. It's fantastic, isn't it? What a fantastic
thought." The
possibly
medal-bound Iraqi soccer team, however,
objects to any such association. While Bush goes on to
say, "Here's a country now, battling for a country that is now
free. It wouldn't have been free if the United States had not
acted,"
Ahmed Manajid, midfield goes so far as to say, "if
he were not playing soccer he would 'for sure' be fighting as part of
the resistance."

04/03/2005 07:49 PMAbu Ghraib. Al Qaeda is
now
officially in Iraq. This is classic Al Qaeda:
Gua
rdian. The attack started at 7pm when a car bomb rammed
one corner of the complex, followed by rocket-propelled grenades,
mortars and small-arms fire. It appeared to be a feint because when
guards scrambled to respond a second car bomb blew up at an opposite
corner, again followed by a hail of bullets and bombs.
Let's hope that they don't attempt an assault like this on major
infrastructure. The damage to high value equipment (special high
capacity turbines and pumps) would be catastrophic.

Olympus and Fujifilm have announced a 1GB version
of their proprietary xD-Picture flash memory card format. As you can
see from this probably-way-too-big-considering picture, it's really
not that interesting, but it is now larger. That's probably the main
thing I dislike about xD, actually; you have to wait on Fujifilm and
Olympus to come out with the newer sizes, whereas with CompactFlash or
whatever there are dozens of companies competing to launch larger
cards.

03/06/2004 01:57 AM
Every couple of years Microsoft wraps a marketing label around all the
major initiatives in the company. In 2000, the label was .NET; in
2003, Longhorn. As developers and IT managers ponder what the
"Longhorn wave" might mean to them, InfoWorld decided to assess the
current .NET wave. Its goals were many and ambitious. At the core of
.NET, the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and its associated Framework
(class library) would usher Microsoft developers into the world of
managed code, whose benefits were already well-known to their Java
counterparts. In parallel, Web services would become the pivotal
integration technology, and XML the lingua franca of data
representation. These were, and still are, the central themes. Don
Box, architect of Longhorn's Indigo communication subsystem, put it
plainly on his weblog: "We're betting that the future is managed code
and XML." [Full story at InfoWorld.com

This story, which began
thirty weblog items ago, is (at least for me) a compelling
demonstration of weblog/journalism synergy. I first tried this
approach in 1996, for a
BYTE cover
story. In the pre-blog era, NNTP newsgroups were the venue, but
it's the same principle. When you're dealing with an evergreen topic,
and you're not worried about getting scooped by the competition, why
not go ahead and outline your ideas in advance? The ensuing
conversation will clarify them, and put you in touch with people who
can share interest and expertise that you otherwise wouldn't have been
able to find.

Is PayPal The Fifth Credit Card?
Is PayPal The Fifth Credit Card?
05/03/2004 01:45 PMAfter working incredibly hard in the legal arena to make sure that
they weren't declared a bank, PayPal is now doing much more to
appear
bank-like to websites that want to take transactions. They're
implementing a series of web services designed to make it easier to
incorporate a PayPal option for commerce sites, along with traditional
credit cards. Of course, some are pointing out that the demand just
isn't there for such things. The end-users don't see much benefit if
the site already has a merchant account and can offer credit card
payments. There isn't much of a benefit to end users to use PayPal
when they can just as easily use a credit card. The only advantage is
to sites that can't afford or don't want a merchant account of their
own - and they're probably already using PayPal.

Why the 2TB µcard Size Doesn't
Matter
Why the 2TB µcard Size Doesn't
Matter
08/09/2004 11:08 AMSo the Taiwanese Industrial Technology Research Institute is
rolling out a new type of flash memory card called "µcard"
("microcard," one would assume), to be unveiled formally at the Taipei
International Electronics Show in October. And while everyone is
getting their panties in a bunch about the 2-terabyte capacity, it
should be noted that other existing flash memory formats, specifically
Sony's Memory Stick Pro and Memory Stick Duo already support cards in
sizes up to 2-terabyte. It all has to do with the addressing and just
because someone can support that doesn't mean they
will.
What is interesting about the new format, though, is its bandwidth.
With a projected speed of 120MB per second (compared to Memory Stick
Pro's 20MB per second, for instance) the new card format may not be
any bigger than other standards, but it should be able to be written
to a lot faster. Only time will tell if anybody will start
incorporating the new µcard format into their gadgetry,
however.
