Bayesian spam filtering for the masses
Bayesian spam filtering for the masses
10/30/2003 11:59 PMSpam, or unsolicited commercial e-mail, is now a sad part of everyday
life online. Research companies estimate that more than 50% of the
worldwide e-mail traffic is spam. As a result, it's becoming
constantly more difficult and time-consuming to sort out legitimate
e-mails from the deluge of commercial messages we're being flooded
with. But there are ways to fight back. In this series, we'll walk
through choosing and setting up a highly effective package for
screening out spam.

12/02/2003 07:37 AMBayesian anti-spam filters count word-frequency in suspect and compare
the results to profiles of word-frequency in spam and ham. Defeating
this requires that your spam include a lot of natural human prose. So
spammers have started to mine the Gutenberg Project and other sources
of human-generated ASCII and dumping random hunks of literature into
their messages to get around the filters.
Blogger and journalist Clive Thompson found an excerpt from Chapter 20
of The Master Key by Wizard of Oz author L Frank Baum in a message
that had as its subject line "the big unit" (no prizes for guessing
what the rest of it was hawking).

Spammer Complies With CAN-SPAM, Claims
ISPs Should Not Filter His Spam
05/20/2004 07:05 PMRonnie Scelson is one of the shortlist of spammers who just seems to
love publicity. While many spammers like to hide away, Scelson's
always willing to talk. He testified before the Senate Commerce
Committee today, claiming that he is now
compl
ying with CAN-SPAM, but threatened to ignore the law if not enough
of his spam messages were getting through filters. He actually has
the audacity to complain that now that CAN-SPAM is in effect, ISPs
should be
required to let his mail through. Maybe the filters
are a little to thick around his head and the message isn't getting
through to him: the
reason his spam is filtered is because
people don't want it.
Bayesian spam rumination: when
word-frequency-histograms attack!
Bayesian spam rumination: when
word-frequency-histograms attack!
06/29/2004 10:40 AMEd Felten has posted an intriguing rumination on the possible failure
modes of Bayesian spam-filtering -- filtering that uses word-frequency
statistics to classify email as spam or ham. As Ed points out,
Bayesian filters are trained by the spammers, who, by choosing the
vocabulary of their messages carefully, can make messages containing
certain words or phrases undeliverable on the Internet.
Now suppose a big spammer wanted to poison a particular word, so that
messages containing that word would be (mis)classified as spam. The
spammer could sprinkle the target word throughout the word salad in
his outgoing spam messages. When users classified those messages as
spam, the targeted word would develop a negative score in the users'
Bayesian spam filters. Later, messages with the targeted word would
likely be mistaken for spam.
This attack could even be carried out against a particular targeted
user. By feeding that user a steady diet of spam (or pseudo-spam)
containing the target word, a malicious person could build up a highly
negative score for that word in the targeted user's filter.

But
seriously, folks. For those who depend on the e-mail inbox for their
livelihood, this seems to be a service that will be valuable. What do

Personal Outgoing Spam Filter

Most spam filters work on incoming mail. There are some
outgoing mail spam filter
at mail server level, but not at the e-mail client level.
Spam filter at the
e-mail client level allows the sender to avoid sending messages
likely to be blocked
by spam filters at the destination.
My theory is that spam filters among people with similar interests
are alike.
I have no evidence to back this theory but, if true, then if my
spam filter thinks
a message I am about to send is a spam, then the spam filter used
by the person I
am sending the message to will think so as well.

BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.107
(Stable) released
07/09/2002 12:52 AM Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using
dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar
systems. It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell
account access and configure. It is different from other, similar
programs, in that it executes a minimal number of programs to do the
filtering, is able to use a MySQL database for the users'
configuration files, can be set up as the queue in Qmail, and have
virtual users' configuration files be found using the username/domain
for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and there open
options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to multiple
entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available so
that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

07/07/2004 12:44 PMThe latest poster boy for spammers is Scott Richter, who gives a
fairly extensive
interview with PC World where he claims, among other things
that he's not a spammer, that he's making "the Internet a better place
with e-mail marketing," and that he may start selling an anti-spam
filter. It's funny because he continues to insist that he's not a
spammer, but talks about how, without him, all those anti-spam
companies would be out of business -- so they need him the way doctors
need tobacco companies to keep people smoking.

05/27/2004 03:09 AMIntelligent Message Filter is based on Microsoft SmartScreen
Technology from Microsoft Research. By using e-mail characteristics
tracked by SmartScreen technology, Intelligent Message Filter can help
determine whether each incoming e-mail message is likely to be spam.
Based on this likelihood, you can choose to block e-mail messages at
the gateway or at the mailbox store. For more information about
Intelligent Message Filter, see Exchange Intelligent Message Filter
Overview.
Important: Before installing Intelligent Message Filter, you must read
the Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter Deployment Guide. If
you do not configure Intelligent Message Filter correctly, your
