Girl scouts learn hard-sell for cookies
01/07/2004 06:09 PMGirl scouts can attend a pressure-sales seminar in Plymouth, Minnesota
to teach them how to use hard sales to move cookie-product.
The scouts, mostly teenagers, learned about "the surly customer," the
one who just won't say yes, and the best response to the customers who
say they've already bought.
Cookie sellers were coached to appeal to people's patriotism: You
don't have to eat the cookies, you can donate them to troops overseas.

JVC's Mystery Hard Drive Camcorders
Revealed: They're Hard Drive Camcorders
09/14/2004 11:18 AM
Oops, I almost forgot about these new cameras
announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as
their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard
drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool
and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are
the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because
they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support
this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to
hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get
something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500,
though).
Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps
in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

Why Is CRM So Hard To Use?
Why Is CRM So Hard To Use?
03/14/2003 01:28 AMIn one CRM application, users must select "execute" from the menu
options to view an item. In another, a pull-down list control does not
open a list –- it pops up a window. In yet another, "apply" and
"submit" are used interchangeably to denote the same action. These are
just a few examples of the little things that drive users absolutely
bonkers.

WAI is way hard
WAI is way hard
11/21/2002 10:15 PMA few days ago I mentioned that I would make this site Web
Accessibility Initiative compliant. This is easier said then done,
but possible. To check a site for meeting accessibility standards,
you send it through the Bobby validator. I had to make a few
modifications before I received the AAA approved icon. The most
difficult problem I had in meeting the accesibility guildelines is
that you cannot have the same text in a link pointing to different
URL's. This occurred often throughout my page. For instance, beneath
each post I had a link to a permanent link for each post, as well as a
link for commenting on each post, named "permalink" and "comments",
respectively. Well these kind of shannagins will not get you AAA
approved.
What I did to remedy this, was make the title of the new post the link
to the permanent link for the post, and I dithed comments. The latter
was not a big decision for me, I never cared for them anyway. If for
some reason in the future I feel the need to them, I'll come up with a
way to integrate them into the now AAA Bobby approved accessible
version of ReadingEd.com.
The About ReadingEd.com page is WAI compliant too along with the main
page, and I will go through other pages in the next couple of hours
making them validate too. (It doesn't help that the Bobby validator
only lets you check your site for compliancy every 10 minutes or so.)

Opting Out Is Hard To Do
Opting Out Is Hard To Do
04/28/2004 09:45 PMWhile we all know not to "opt-out" of spam is likely to guarantee you
more spam, what about opting out of the more "legitimate" spam
messages you get from well-known companies? PCWorld has a story
about the efforts needed
to
opt-out of an email list from Sony: multiple clicking of the
"opt-out" link didn't do the trick, nor did a series of phone calls
and emails over the course of four weeks. Each seemed to only lead to
directions to call a different number - none of which did anything to
help the guy opt-out. This is, of course, illegal under CAN SPAM, but
it's not like anyone actually pays attention to that law anyway. In
fact, other studies have shown the same thing. Even with Fortune 500
companies, the opt-out link often does nothing. I've seen this
personally in my own email, and found that phone calls are the only
way to get off some lists. Following the Sony example, the writer of
the article set up a test email account and subscribed to a bunch of
lists - only to discover that many do not follow opt-out requests. Of
course, when asked, all claim technical difficulties. Sony, however,
claims that the reason he wasn't opted out was because he didn't
follow all of the instructions
after clicking the opt out link.
Those instructions include filling in a form with the email address,
clicking submit, and
then filling out a five question survey
about why he was opting out and hitting submit
again. Isn't it
nice that companies that don't even believe in double opt-in, seem to
have no problem with triple opt-out?
XML Is Too Hard For Programmers
XML Is Too Hard For Programmers
03/19/2003 10:25 PMTim Bray: "The notion that there is an 'XML data model' is silly
and unsupported by real-world evidence. The definition of XML is
syntactic: the 'Infoset' is an afterthought and in any case is far
indeed from being a data model specification that a programmer could
work with. Empirical evidence: I can point to a handful of different
popular XML-in-Java APIs each of which has its own data model and each
of which works. So why would you think that there's a data model there
to build a language around?"

An Ode To The Hard Drive
An Ode To The Hard Drive
05/27/2004 09:35 AMYou know it's likely to be a slow news day when the first thing you
turn up is, basically,
an ode to the unsung hard drive.
Hard drives are, admittedly, a fairly unsexy business. Then again,
you might think the same thing about semiconductors - and they seem to
get plenty of attention. Either way, storage is very important to
consumers - as the article notes in looking at how quickly people
focus on the size of their iPod hard drives or
just
how much space their Gmail account really has. Even the leading
people in the storage business are quite colorful and certainly
unique, which should get them much more attention. However, when it's
all said and done, no matter how important your hard drive is (just
think how people react when their hard drives die), and no matter how
quickly they improve in just how much data they can hold, not too many
people find themselves particularly interested in the "boring" hard
drive business.

HP: Breaking up is hard to do
HP: Breaking up is hard to do
03/31/2005 12:35 PMMark Hurd, who will take over the reins at floundering tech giant
Hewlett-Packard on Friday, was grilled by analysts Wednesday about
whether he plans drastic restructuring of the company.
Hurd, formerly the chief executive officer of NCR (Research), was
named CEO on Tuesday. During an introductory conference call with the
financial community Wednesday morning, Hurd stressed that his primary
goal is to repair the problems at HP (Research), and not necessarily
break up the company. "You talk about problems but there are a
bunch of opportunities at the same time," Hurd said in response
to one question about strategy. "I want to get underneath every
piece of the business and will be focused on doing my best to optimize
each part."

Why JSP Sucks So Hard
Why JSP Sucks So Hard
12/19/2002 11:43 PMonce again my UI engineers will be taking perfectly good HTML
written in Dreamweaver and tearing it apart, throwing out some of it
and rewriting other parts of it, just to make it work with the JSP
they're writing. Once they're done, the HTML author will have
absolutely no clue what the page does any more, and will have no
desire or ability to edit it. When we insist that no really we need
this redesigned, we'll spend twice as long doing it (doubling our
costs, negative ROI, bad technology choice, yadda yadda yadda) since
the HTML author will need that long to write in sample data and then
have the JSP author tear it out again. -- Marc Hedlund

Wi-Fi Still Hard to Use for Mass Market
09/07/2004 04:17 PMConnecting to multiple hotspots can be cumbersome for users: Part of
the problem is that practically everyone along the value chain wants
to deliver an easy user interface because that's one place they can
differentiate their products from the competitors. But right now chip
makers, product vendors, software developers like Microsoft, and
hotspot service providers have all developed user interfaces aimed at
making it easy for users to get on. Either they all need to get
together on developing a single, easy way for users to get connected
or one of them needs to make the perfect solution that everyone will
naturally gravitate toward. Until then, users will be faced with so
many "easy" tools for getting connected that they'll continue to be
confused....
