The Usefulness of Instructional Videos

The Usefulness of Instructional Videos 06/17/2005 05:03 PM

Mark Leaman of MEMAP.ORG posted a short article about the actual usefulness of expensive instructional DVD sets, "You may have noticed that the computer software market is flooded with tutorial DVDs. One of the reasons why is that it’s a high profit product. I have a close friend who recently spent over $1,000 on tutorial DVDs to learn how to use a popular video compositing software product. Tutorial DVD and video sets can cost almost as much, if not more than the actual software product itself."

If the success of an open source project can be measured by the number of third-party books about it, then OpenOffice.org is thriving. Not only is OpenOffice.org represented by a dozen books and pieces of training material on Amazon.com, but interest in OpenOffice.org is widespread enough that each of the books is geared to a slightly different audience. This article gives an overview of four of the current OpenOffice.org books, ending with a suggestion of which to buy for your own needs.

use of technology: US Education
secretary

The United States Education secretary stated that students have increased access to information technology, but would like to see greater pedagogical use of it. Rod Paige remarked that

"Education is the only business still debating the usefulness of technology... Schools remain unchanged for the most part despite numerous reforms and increased investments in computers."

Nine in 10 children between age 5 and 17 use computers, and even higher numbers of online teenagers use the Internet for school-related work, according to the report sent to Congress. The largest group of new users of the Internet from 2000 to 2002 were kids age 2 to 5.
Page's comments came during the same period as the launch of a National Education Technology Plan .

Ted Nelson on the Web as Hypertext 06/05/2002 07:50 AM
The Web isn't hypertext, it's DECORATED DIRECTORIES! What we have instead is the vacuous victory of typesetters over authors, and the most trivial form of hypertext that could have been imagined.

"tri" Ted Nelson is one of the inventors of hypertext.
