Copper and
Tin. "That's the essence of a startup: having brilliant people do
work that's beneath them. Big companies try to hire the right person
for the job. Startups win because they don't-- because they take
people so smart that they would in a big company be doing 'research,'
and set them to work instead on problems of the most immediate and
mundane sort." Ah, so that's why I haven't quit and started a startup.

QuickerTek is showing off a new hardcore Wi-Fi-boosting
antenna for the MacMini that they claim will give the little box a
networking range of over a mile. The 27dBm Transceiver is a 500
milliwatt unit (the Mac mini standard Airport Extreme is around 30)
and is available for $180. Sure, that's over a third of the price of
the mini itself, but they aren't marketing to the average
user—think more along the lines of machines hidden in remote
niches.

NEC's Palm-Sized HDTV Transceiver
NEC's Palm-Sized HDTV Transceiver
04/04/2005 10:45 AM
NEC has a new wireless video transmission technology using
the 60GHz band, and has already developed a palm-sized transceiver
just for it. Video and audio signals are digitized into a signal
measuring about 1Gbps, at which point they're transferred using "ASK,"
the same high speed transmission used in optical fiber. Because of the
small size and throughput of this unit, NEC suggests them for wireless
HDTV transmissions.

OnTime Power-Over-Ethernet Clock
04/05/2005 11:30 AM
I
sort of understand why this simple 'OnTime' digital clock is $200. It
operates on only power-over-Ethernet and syncs up with any SNTP
(Simple Network Time Protocol) server it can find on the network. And
it's designed to be seen from over 150 feet away, so we're talking
about something that would live in a data center, not your house.
But why hasn't someone made one for our houses? Regular Ethernet
has some power over it—surely it's enough to drive a
simple clock and some SNTP firmware. I send this idea blindly to the
internet, like a A.O. Spare sigil, and await its return. I will still
expect the usual 15 percent conceptual licensing fee.
