04/03/2005 03:52 AMAP - For centuries, one of the surest signs that a pope had died was
the closing of the massive Bronze Door beneath a portico off St.
Peter's Square. But the first word of John Paul II's death came in an
e-mail.

Times Were Bad, VCs Get Tough; Times Are
Good, VCs Get Tough
Times Were Bad, VCs Get Tough; Times Are
Good, VCs Get Tough
05/20/2004 01:05 PMAfter the bubble popped, many VCs practically stopped all investing.
In the cases where they did invest, they often put in
incre
dibly onerous terms that gave the VCs a lot more power than they
might have deserved (though, some VCs will disagree with this). Of
course, now that times are getting better, people are saying that
VCs are
tightening terms again - so as not to get burned. What
this really means is that many VCs are looking for any reason to make
the terms more in their favor. Times are bad? Terms need to be
tighter. Times are good? Terms need to be tighter to make sure they
don't go bad again. The obvious response, of course, is that it
is the VC's job to get good terms - but if those terms cause
more problems, it's a strategic mistake. If entrepreneurs feel that
their VCs are ripping them off, it defeats much of the purpose of
getting that VC money in the first place. Besides, as the startup
market picks up again (as it's doing) this becomes less of an issue.
Already, we hear stories about VCs offering ridiculous valuations to
companies because they're in a "hot" space. When competition for the
hot startups increases, VCs are suddenly willing to make the terms a
bit more reasonable.

PeopleSoft stock closed at about $22-and-a-quarter yesterday, so $26 a

PeopleSoft Inc. yesterday rejected Oracle Corp.'s $9.4
billion hostile takeover bid, saying the $26-a-share offer is too low
and expressing serious doubts about whether the proposed combination
would receive antitrust approval from regulators in
Washington.

Times 2, Journal 0
Times 2, Journal 0
03/14/2005 05:45 PMWell, it's official: The New York Times, having replaced William
Safire with
John Tierney, now has two dedicated
"conservative seats" on its op-ed page. Meanwhile,
as I wrote a
month ago, the Wall Street Journal, having lost its sole token
sorta-liberal, has...not replaced him at all.
The Times constantly takes brickbats from the right for its
supposed liberal bias, but it's clearly trying to find room on its
opinion pages for a variety of perspectives. Meanwhile, the Journal,
whose editorial pages list far further to the right than the Times'
lean leftward, doesn't seem to think it need bother expose its readers
to those who disagree with it.
These papers pretty much represent the U.S.'s two most important
national dailies. When I beef about the Journal, I sometimes get
e-mail from people I know (or don't know) who work there, protesting
that I shouldn't hold the editorial pages' neanderthal bias against
the rest of the paper. And it's true: I love the Journal's feature
writing, and a lot of its news coverage is fair and reasonably
non-ideological. I would say exactly the same thing about the Times'
news pages.
Yet on the opinion/editorial side, the distinction couldn't be more
vivid, and it needs to be said, over and over again: One paper has a
hubbub of different points of view, the other has a starkly uniform
party line that is significantly off to the margins of the American
mainstream.
That difference hasn't seemed to filter very far into the
blogosphere's media-criticism memepool. Anti-Times noise is endemic
here, whereas the Journal doesn't seem to warrant more than an
occasional snipe. Maybe that's a sign of the Journal's
subscription-only self-marginalization; but Dow Jones has actually
placed most Journal opinion-writing on the free Opinionjournal.com site, so
I don't think that's it.
Rather, this is one more data point in t
he right's campaign against the Times and other media institutions
that it sees as impediments on the path to total reality control. The
scorched-earth ground rules parallel the CNN/Fox argument.
Conservatives jealously defend their right to own their own partisan
media outlets, while loudly complaining that anyone still foolish
enough to struggle for balance is hopelessly biased to the left.

03/14/2005 06:22 PMIn my RSS presentations, I always use the Chicago Sun-Times as an example
because NewsIsFree has been scraping their site for years. I used to

Now, though, Steven, IMs
to tell me he's found a feed on the

Maybe this will even trickle down to my Sun-Times-affiliated local
papers...!

When times were simpler
06/02/2004 01:51 PMBack in early 1999, Peterme
half-jokingly came up with "blog" as a shorter form of "weblog"
and despite everyone pretty much universally disliking the word "blog"
or "blogger" or "blogging" ever since, the name has stuck. I've never
really liked it and lately I've taken to using the word weblog as
often as possible, but I'm reminded of the very first time I used the
short form of the word every single day since.
If you take a look at the top right corner image of the MetaFilter design, you'll see
"Community 'blog" which is oh so quaint because when I designed the
layout in May of 1999, I was pressed for space and couldn't fit
"weblog" there. I even added an apostrophe to blog, because the
contraction seemed so odd at the time. And yet, five years later it
still remains.
