For the Iraqi orphans

For the Iraqi orphans

For the Iraqi orphans 03/25/2005 04:09 PM

A foundation has been established to help the Iraqi orphans that survived the January shooting (earlier Mefi thread) by American forces. There's also more recent information about the shooting in this Newsweek article. Check out this BoingBoing post to read an e-mail from the photographer that witnessed the shooting and is now establishing this foundation.

Fund established to help Iraqi orphans

Fund established to help Iraqi orphans 03/24/2005 08:15 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: In January, I wrote about the tragic shooting of an Iraqi family by US soldiers that orphaned nine children. Today, a Boing Boing reader named J. Tony Smith emailed me with some good news. The photographer of the heart-stirring images reports that a fund has been established to benefit the children. The following is from an email that the photographer sent to Tony and other people who were moved by the photos.
I'm Chris Hondros, a photographer for Getty Images, and if you're getting this email you wrote me in the aftermath of the terrible incident I photographed in Tal Afar, Iraq, in January.  If you recall, five children were orphaned by U.S. troops who mistakenly shot up their car when they approached a foot patrol.  The pictures of the incident have run all over the world and already done much to address the issue of checkpoint shootings in Iraq.

Many of you expressed a desire to help the family; I'm happy to report that a website for donations has now been set up, www.hassanfamilyfund.org.&# 160;  Money donated to the cause will first go to arranging medical care for Racan, a boy in the car who's spinal column was damaged by one of the bullets and will never walk again unless treatment outside of Iraq is arranged for him.  (Humanitarian workers and others in Iraq are working toward this now.)  Excess funds will go to the extended family (the Hassan's had nine children) and to civil projects in Tal Afar itself, most likely a school built to commemorate the deaths. Any help you can give will be appreciated.

More information about this story is available in a story in this week's Newsweek magazine, available online at: http://www.m snbc.msn.com/id/7245228/site/newsweek/

Thanks, Orphans!

Thanks, Orphans! 11/14/2003 06:26 PM
Tom DeLay thinks of the children. The GOP House Leader is attempting to create a charity fund for abused and neglected children. Oh, the fund also pays for "late-night convention parties, a luxury suite during President Bush's speech at Madison Square Garden and yacht cruises" during the 2004 GOP convention. Unlike election funds now restricted by Campaign Finance law, donations to DeLay's semi-charity will be tax-exempt, and of course completely unreported to election officials. (NYT Link)

Were Iraqi WMDs a kleptocratic con-job? 01/26/2004 11:29 AM
Calpundit believes that Saddam's WMDs were ginned up by scamming Iraqi scientists, who get lots of fake weapons programs funded in order to funnel off the money.
An increasingly out-of-touch Saddam makes sense. High-level scientists faking programs in order to get money for their own pet causes makes sense. Saddam's attitude toward the inspections makes sense because he thought there really were active WMD programs in place that would take time to dismantle. And it may be that even some of the exiles were telling the truth when they reported that Iraq still had active large-scale WMD programs. They might have been scammed the same way Saddam was.
