12/13/2003 08:14 AM
Google's Jason Shellen proposes
a change in the functionality of the white-on-orange XML icon. He
says most users find it confusing, but I wonder about that. How many
people click on things they aren't interested in? I don't. Too busy. I
might, if I knew nothing about XML, click once, after seeing them pop
up in lots of familiar places, seeing something I don't get, click on
the Back button and remember not to go there again.
I agree that most Web users today won't understand what they
see when they click. However, I don't think they'll understand
something that looks different from, but contains the same information
as the page they just came from. Why is this here twice? the
uninformed user might ask. To which Shellen says, it's explained on
the page itself. But I don't read, responds the user, I just skim.
But it would be good to verify some of the assumptions by
actually asking some users what they think. And we know that the
white-on-orange buttons are good for something, and they will
be less useful if they aren't used consistently.

Yesterday I got a request to support Apple's Sherlock
recommended comments for hyperlinked search results as illustrated here at the request of Ben Meadowcroft. I did
so and I think its alright -- so does he. But I'd still
like some confirmation.
More on Ben's very cool work tomorrow or shortly (as soon as I know
its ok to post it).
Thanks Ben! Excellent suggestion.

Who cares if there are 300 or 3,000 YASNSs. But we DO care when
some of them reach 1M members!
So who else is part of the 1M club?
And BTW I'm not talking about dating sites. I'm talking about
sites who have over 1M end-users inter-connected together through
degrees of relationship.
Friendster, Tickle, MySpace and now hi5 - any others?

07/13/2004 01:35 PMWell, tmenezes stern demands in the queue cowed me.* And the general
opinion, amongst both users and staff here, was that sponsorship was a
stupid idea. In principle, I don't agree (though it did need some
changes from the original concept), but I'm willing to go along with
the tide. Hopefully I will get a chnace to try out sponsorship
somewhere else in the future. So new user accounts are open again,
without any changes. We've had a bit of a cooling off period, I've
kicked out a pretty hefty number of idiots (who I expect to have to
kick out again and again, but what the hell). There's a few more
people with the powers and mandate to keep an eye on new users and nip
the annoying ones in the bud. There are also a couple features coming
to help the rest of you let us know who is being a jerk. Meanwhile,
those of you who've emailed me asking when you could get an account,
the time is now. Enjoy. * No, not really. Actually they would have
been open before he posted that, but I had to get Voxel to fix a
problem with our mail server.

07/14/2004 11:53 PMNT4 Users In A Pickle
NT4 Users In A Pickle
03/14/2005 06:07 PMNetcraft reports that about 1.1% of the
websites that they track are still served up by NT4, and that there's
a major security flaw in NT4 that will go forever unpatched due to its
end-of-life status.
Hundreds of thousands of web sites that continue to run the
Windows NT4 face a security dilemma, with no public patch available
for a vulnerability in a key Windows networking protocol. The critical
flaw in the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol could allow remote
attackers to seize control of servers.
This is a good example of why you don't want an outside company to
have a stranglehold on your critical business components. Granted, NT4
is older than dirt, and no one should be using it anymore, but MS is
essentially forcing an upgrade by discontinuing support for it.
They've found a way to spin the PR, though:
"Windows NT Server 4.0 was developed before the era of
sophisticated Internet based attacks. It has reached the point of
architectural obsolescence," said Peter Houston, Microsoft's senior
director of Windows Serviceability. "It would be irresponsible to
convey a false sense of security by extending public support for this
server product."
Microsoft isn't the only ones that are guilty in this regard. Red
Hat drops support for older versions pretty quickly as well, despite
the fact that the code is readily available to plug any and all
security holes that might crop up.
Aren't these companies essentially saying that their old software
was terribly flawed? "No, our old stuff was poorly put together and
the security holes can't be fixed. But our new stuff, now
that's great stuff."

PCs out sick more than users
PCs out sick more than users
06/25/2004 08:37 AMThe average UK PC is rendered unusable for the equivalent of around
nine working days every year because the owner is cleaning up spam or
fighting viruses. This is two days a year more than the average UK
worker takes off as sick leave, according to Yahoo. A survey of 2,500
UK e-mail users found that 70 percent of users had been infected by a
virus in the past year and 42 percent say they found it less stressful
fighting their way through rush-hour traffic than finding legitimate
e-mails among the spam in their inboxes. Spam is a problem for all
e-mail users but some companies are hit harder than others.
