02/10/2004 02:41 AMGovernment documents supplied by Former Treasury Secretary Paul
O'Neill to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Ron Suskind
for his book, The
Price of Loyalty, are now available online. The site makes use of the Creative Commons public domain mark.
These documents, drawn from a collection of 19,000 files, are called
"The Bush Files" and Suskind is encouraging other administration
officials to contribute to the database, "to encourage more
productive, fact-based public dialogues," as stated on the website.

12/24/2004 12:19 PMElcomSoft Co. Ltd. has released Advanced Office Password Recovery
(AOPR), an application that allows business managers, information
technology support administrators, and law enforcement officials to
gain access to Microsoft(R) Office(R) password-protected documents,
that have been accidentally or purposefully password protected. New
product combines the latest and the most advanced cryptanalysis
algorithms developed by Elcomsoft's research department. AOPR is
capable of instantly recovering passwords for a wide range of
Microsoft's business and office applications, including all components
of MS Office, from the very first DOS versions to Office 2003
programs, including the ones for Windows, Mac, Pocket PC and localized
versions. Over 30 different types of password encryption methods are
supported. [PRWEB Dec 22, 2004]

Are the CBS Bush documents
forger
ies? Looks to me as though some legitimate questions are being
raised. CBS's responses so far are not sufficient.
If they are fake, a whole lot of heads should roll at the network,
starting at the top of CBS News. If they're fake, CBS should tell us
what document experts it consulted, and should say exactly where it
got the papers in the first place. Among other things. An election
could turn on this.
(In just a bit of the other news, the Army says the CIA kept Iraqi
prisoners
"off the
books" at Abu Graib, probably breaking international law, so that
the Red Cross couldn't find them, and the Iraqi situation is a total
mess. Employer-paid health care costs are
up 11 percent, yet another double-digit increase
in a time of almost zero inflation.)

Translating XML Documents with xml:tm
01/08/2004 08:49 PMIn order to reduce translation costs in an environment where
documentation can change frequently the best answer is the use of
translation memory, which works by aligning previously translated text
in a target language with the source language. This article describes
an improvment, known as "text memory", which allows translation and
source text to reside in the same XML document.

12/30/2003 12:08 PMDigging Into Documentshttp://www.computerworld.com/databasetopics/d
ata/datamining/story/0,10801,88351,00.htmlFormerly
used primarily by the intelligence community and businesses that are
strongly dependent upon research, text mining technologies are now
beginning to find more general acceptance. The mounds of unstructured
data that have been piling up in companies for decades are growing
larger as a result of new regulatory requirements that are forcing
companies to retain e-mail and other documents - and to be able to
find specific information in them. The key to making text mining work
for business -- not to mention the intelligence community -- is
striking a balance between accuracy and speed, says Ronen Feldman,
chief scientist at text mining software company ClearForest Corp. in
New York. In a recent interview with Computerworld's Tommy Peterson,
Feldman discussed how text mining technologies work and what promise
they hold for business.

David Pescovitz:
A new study from the University of Washington's Information School
provides more proof that search rules:
More than half of survey participants admitted losing
track of a paper document at least once a week -- more than
twice the number of people who reported losing electronic
information.
The result? While more than 60 percent reported being satisfied with
their ability to handle computerized records such as e-mails,
electronic documents and Web bookmarks, only 31 percent were satisfied
with their ability to organize their papers.
The survey is part of an interesting project called
Keeping Found
Things Found, an effort to develop innovative ways to manage
information stored digitally and on dead trees.

The Myth of Documents as Containers
The Myth of Documents as Containers
12/04/2003 10:42 AMI'm off to NYC - let's hear it for Amtrak! - to give a talk to
customers of Pitney-Bowes about why documents aren't really containers
of information. Why would we ever think that they were? Perhaps
because we've viewed ourselves as containers of information. Plus,
we've recently managed to informationalize all of business. But, you
know what? Information isn't really the lifeblood of business.
Lifeblood is the lifeblood of business. Of course, I'll probably
rewrite the whole thing on the train ride down....

Office task pane. First, the bad old crufty way using VS.NET 2003, and
then the good new elegant way using the beta of VSTO (Visual Studio
Tools for Office) 2005. In either case, the idea is to animate the
task pane with context-sensitive controls that sense and react to
navigation within the document.

Scoble made my week and truly inspired me with this comment::
Here's a homework project. Go to the RSS
Search engine. Now go to Google. Search for these words:
"InfoPath" and "OneNote." What do you notice? I like the quality of
the RSS results a LOT better. [_Go_]
A>
I was thinking about this a lot and the best analogy I can give you
this the following:
- We've all debated ad nauseum what blogs are. But the one I
like best is that "a blog is a conversation". It might tbe with
your friends, your employees, your customers or yourself (if no one's
reading).
- Conversation is a product of the brain. What else can it
be?
- What this is shaping up to be is not a document centric search
engine at all. Its shaping up to being a conversation
centric search engine or as I'm starting to think of it --
searching the brains of all the smart people out there that are
talking about things.
