Newspaper Industry Continues Their
Missteps

Newspaper Industry Continues Their
Missteps
05/06/2004 08:31 PM
Last year we wrote about why charging for newspapers online doesn't make sense. It's a backwards move, trying to force an old business model onto a new delivery platform that won't have it. It actually does more damage to the newspaper by cutting off opportunities - especially as the online advertising market is taking off again. And, yet, many more newspapers seem headed in that direction, mistaking squeezing more revenue out of a dwindling readership for actually figuring out how to embrace the opportunities that the internet presents.

20% Of Newspaper Readers Are Primarily
Online

20% Of Newspaper Readers Are Primarily
Online
06/17/2005 03:33 PM
It seems that lots of publications are picking up on a newly released study saying that 20% of newspaper readers primarily read those newspapers online. It's a nice stat, but it's the first time the study's been done, so there's no time frame or comparison data to know what this really means. While some in the press are talking about how this represents a "shift", it's really hard to know how dramatic a shift it is without that other data. To be honest, 20% doesn't really seem that high, and is probably about what a lot of people would guess if asked how many people read newspapers primarily online. Among the factoids in the report, though, is that the NY Times is the most read paper online -- though, it will be interesting to see how their new strategy impacts this.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Why Charging For Newspaper Content
Online Doesn't Make Sense

Why Charging For Newspaper Content
Online Doesn't Make Sense
11/07/2003 04:16 AM
One of the arguments that shows up here repeatedly is on the backwardness of local newspapers charging for online content. There are a number of reasons why it's a bad idea - from the level of taking yourself out of the online discussion and believing that walled garden content can survive to misunderstanding the very basic economics of the internet. Still, many newspapers are trying to do so, and some even believe that it's going well. Along comes Vin Crosbie, who knows both the newspaper business and the online content world, to smack a little sense into them. The Albuquerque Journal explained why they thought they were brilliant for creating a "successful" operation charging for their online content, and Crosbie picks apart the argument, bit by bit, and explains how they're actually losing money on this plan - and how all their other examples of newspapers charging for online content are bad (or irrelevant) examples. If you're interested in the economics of online content, it's worth a read.

UK Newspaper Deluding Itself About
Online Impact On Paper Sales

UK Newspaper Deluding Itself About
Online Impact On Paper Sales
09/20/2004 03:07 PM
It really is looking like the newspaper industry is deluding itself about the impact of the web on their business. Fitting well with the story earlier today about why newspapers require online registration, comes the news that the Sun in the UK has decided to pull some of its content off the web, after doing a study suggesting that readers who came to the site then chose not to buy the paper. Of course, all this really does, rather than drive more people to buy the paper, is drive more people to other websites. Basically, they're making the classic disruptive technology mistake: rather than embracing the new technology that's eating away they're business, they're trying to deny it exists.

Canadian Recording Industry Trying To
Kill Online Music Stores

Canadian Recording Industry Trying To
Kill Online Music Stores
04/18/2005 11:29 PM
It's almost comical to see each mis-step that the recording industry makes in trying to figure out how to deal with online music. The latest bizarre move is up in Canada, where the industry has been freaking out ever since a judge suggested that people downloading music weren 't actually breaking the law -- especially in light of the fees charged to all blank media sales to cover such copying. The various groups who manage such tariffs are putting in requests that would amount to appr oximately 40% of the revenue brought in from online music stores such as iTunes. Yes, 40%. You have to assume they're going on the theory that if they get to ask for some money for nothing, they might as well ask for a lot. Hopefully these fees will get thrown out, because if they don't, it will basically kill off legal music download stores in Canada and just send more people to the "free" alternatives.
