Travel Centers of America Goes Wi-FI
Nationwide
05/27/2004 01:37 PMIt's not a truck stop, it's a travel center, and its 150-plus
locations will be wireless by July: Travel Centers combine truck stop
features with RV and auto drivers needs, and they'll add Wi-Fi to the
mix--it's a must have for any place in its category now. The 40
company-owned stores are already unwired; the franchisees will be
ready to go by July 3. Service will cost $1.49 for an hour, $4.49 for
24 hours starting at the time of purchase, $22.49 for two months, and
$169.99 per year. These longer plans are designed truckers to ensure
brand loyalty. Diesel-fuel buyers can cash in RoadKing Club points
they earn from buying gas against the Wi-Fi service....

Hardyhttp://snipurl.com/88fk Feds Launch Bioinformatics Centers - Institute contracts for
databases and portals to compile info on diseases. Officials at the
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) are
enlisting private companies and universities to help make data
available about disease-causing organisms. Under eight five-year
contracts, companies and academic institutions will develop databases
and Web portals to compile information about a small number of
pathogens, the germs that cause disease. Some of the pathogens are
considered possible bioterrorism agents, while others are public
health concerns unrelated to terrorism. With NIAID footing the bill,
the data will be freely available to scientists, said Valentina Di
Francesco, bioinformatics program director in NIAID's Division of
Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Officials at NIAID, which is
part of the National Institutes of Health, have awarded seven
Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC) contracts, and one more is in
negotiations, she said. This has been added to

12/16/2003 05:15 PMExploring New Roles for Community Technology Centers: Can CTCs
Serve as Nonprofit Technical Assistance Providers?http://www.compumentor.org
/ctcstudy/CompuMentor Report Examines the Capacity of
CTCs to Provide Technology Assistance to Nonprofits. Over the past
several years, much discussion has taken place in the nonprofit sector
and particularly in the community technology movement around the
evolving roles of community technology centers (CTC). One idea that
has received significant attention is whether CTCs may expand their
roles to act as nonprofit technology assistance providers (NTAPs).
With the support of the AOL Time Warner Foundation,
CompuMentor took a closer look at this issue and published its
findings in the report "Exploring New Roles for Community Technology
Centers: Can CTCs Serve as Nonprofit Technical Assistance Providers?"
CompuMentor's interest in this subject came from two vantage points.
First, as an NTAP we understand there is a very large unmet need in
the nonprofit sector for technology support services. Second, as a
provider or services and technical assistance to CTCs, we know that
sustainability is a huge challenge.
The key findings of the
report, conducted by Rem Hoffmann, include:
* Although CTCs
are perceived as tech-savvy organizations, they may not have the
capacity to function as NTAPs.
* Technology skills are only
one of five categories of qualifications necessary to serve as an
NTAP. Others are mission congruency, business capabilities, the
ability to subsidize the cost of providing service, and position in
the community. While a number of CTCs meet some of these
qualifications, very few meet all or most of them.
* NTAPs
reported that fundraising to subsidize the cost of providing services
was critical to succeeding. The report found that it costs much more
to provide these services than nonprofits are able to pay, which
directly contrasts the perception that CTCs acting as NTAPs can
generate earned income to support their other programs.
There appears to be a small subset of CTCs that can offer NTAP
services. The paper concludes with a recommendation to conduct further
research of new models for NTAPs and CTCs to partner to deliver
services to community-based organizations.
911 Call Centers Won't Be Ready For E911
Deadline
911 Call Centers Won't Be Ready For E911
Deadline
02/10/2004 04:48 AMLast year we had a story about how the money that NY was supposedly
collecting for E911 service (so police have the ability to locate
mobile phone callers), was instead put into
"dry
cleaning bills, ballpoint pens, travel, car leases, grounds
maintenance for precincts and winter boots." In response to this
revelation, a bill was introduced in Congress to
give more
money to governments that don't divert the funds. You read that
right, the plan to save the system was to
give more money to
governments that actually do what they're supposed to - rather than
throwing away money on other things. So, is it really any surprise to
find out now that a new study shows that 50% of all 911 emergency call
centers
won't be ready in time for the deadline? Apparently, they
need more money. Perhaps if they hadn't squandered the money
specifically earmarked for this purpose there wouldn't be a problem.
It sounds like many of the call centers haven't even started the
process of getting ready, despite knowing about the deadline for many
years. The wireless carriers have fulfilled their end of the bargain
and should all be ready when the December 31, 2005 deadline hits.
It's just the local governments that have been ignoring the mandate in
favor of spending money elsewhere. In the meantime, don't be
surprised if the E911 fees on your mobile phone bill go up as the
local governments need to make back all the money that went into those
boots and ballpoint pens. Hope those new boots are comfy and the
ballpoint pens write smoothly.
