/etc/net 0.7.1 (Scripts branch)

/etc/net 0.7.1 (Scripts branch)

/etc/net 0.7.1 (Scripts branch) 03/25/2005 07:06 AM

/etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional configuration subsystems, /etc/net provides builtin support for configuration profiles, interface name management, removable device support, full iproute2 command set support, interface dependency resolution, and a QoS configuration framework. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types: Ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv6/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP, Ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, usbnet, and PPP. Due to its modular design, support for new interface types can be added without overall design changes.

Changes:
This release features a minor bugfix for network.init, a flushed PPP address bugfix, an iplink file processing bugfix, and an updated childfinder script for the new HOST variable.

Replacing Perl Scripts with PHP Scripts 11/26/2002 05:12 AM
With the introduction of version 4.2, PHP has started supporting a new SAPI (Server Application Programming Interface) called CLI (Command Line Interface). This facility was introduced to help developers create small shell applications (scripts) with PHP. So, now you can kiss Perl goodbye forever. -- Jayesh Jain

Scripts and Slashes 10/28/2003 11:08 PM

In an earlier blog entry, I mentioned how Safari was having to emulate a quirk in Mozilla in order to make a particular Web site work. When Mozilla encounters a <script/> element with an XML-style self-closing /, it actually closes the tag, even in HTML pages. This is - I believe - incorrect behavior, since in HTML the / is invalid and should simply be discarded, leaving you with an open tag instead.

If you try this in WinIE and Safari 1.0, you'll see that they behave identically. They both ignore the / and leave the script open. Both Mozilla and Opera, however, honor the / and close up the script tag.

With my "fix" for this bug, the latest Safari will now honor the / as well. I wonder if this behavior was deliberate on the part of Mozilla and Opera or just some accidental fallout from their XML implementations... whatever the case, we're all stuck with it now, since Web sites are (amazingly) writing to it.

sbox is a CGI wrapper script that allows Web site hosting services to safely grant CGI authoring privileges to untrusted clients. In addition to changing the process privileges of client scripts to match their owners, it goes beyond other wrappers by placing configurable ceilings on script resource usage, avoiding unintentional and intentional denial of service attacks. It also optionally allows the Webmaster to place clients' CGI scripts in a chroot'ed shell restricted to the author's home directories.

Intel's Ability To Rewrite History

Intel's Ability To Rewrite History 04/18/2005 02:28 PM
Intel has been seriously overhyping WiMax for a couple of years now. While some have recently recognized that all this hype (for what should be a promising technology in certain areas) is likely to be damagi ng to the growth of the technology, Intel just can't stop its hype machine. What's scary, though, is how easily reporters are taking the word of Intel as if it were the gospel. This was seen on Friday when Reuters printed what appeared to be an Intel press release on WiMax (bylined by some Reuters reporter) without bothering to do any research about the technology, look for opposing viewpoints or (heaven forbid!) actually question Intel about some of their broad (and highly questionable) claims. Today it gets even worse. While there's plenty of coverage about Intel finally releasing their WiMax chip (a bit late, and there's still no certification process for WiMax equipment), the Reuters article on the matter concludes with a piece of pure fiction concerning Intel's role in developing WiFi: "Intel's support for Wi-Fi in its Centrino brand of notebook computer chips made the short-range wireless technology into a global standard popular in cafes, homes, offices and other public spaces." Um... but, no. That's not what happened. Intel supported a competing standard, called HomeRF -- and despite plenty of Intel hype, everyone went with WiFi instead. Intel only jumped on board after it was abundantly clear that WiFi was a huge success and Intel had backed the wrong horse. Of course, they followed that up by trying to co-opt the buzz around WiFi by suggesting that their "Centrino" chip was the be-all, end-all of WiFi, and now they're trying to bury past overhype by doubling down on WiMax hype. It's really disappointing. WiMax should be a decent technology, but Intel's clear overselling of its capabilities (and time-frames) is only going to damage the technology. If you just read the hype, you're going to think that WiMax delivers a hell of a lot more than it actually does -- and that's just going to lead to a lot of unmet promises and backlash towards the technology. You'd think that a company like Intel would have noticed the same hype to backlash cycle that seems to happen with every wireless technology from 3G to Bluetooth to WAP.

Watch Jack Valenti Try To Rewrite
History

Watch Jack Valenti Try To Rewrite
History
06/21/2004 03:59 PM
News.com is running an interview with Jack Valenti where they actually ask him the question that many interviewers have skipped over, about his famous "Boston strangler" quote about how the VCR will kill the movie industry. Valenti, in his usual manner, tries to rewrite history by making two claims. First, he says he was never actually against the VCR, but was just worried about the piracy aspect. Second, he says he's been vindicated in those views because of all the VCR related piracy that's out there. He's wrong on both points, but the News.com interviewer doesn't challenge him. First, it's pretty clear that if you say that the VCR is the Boston Strangler to the film producer, that you expect it to kill off the film industry. Instead, the VCR completely revived and revitalized the industry. Second, his claim on vindication is because of incredibly misleading stats that he throws out (twice!) claiming that the industry is "losing" $3.5 billion a year to piracy -- not considering the fact that the vast majority of people who end up with pirated films were unlikely to buy the full cost version. Compare this to another interview today by the Harvard professor who did that study a few months ago suggesting that file sharing does not damage sales. In that interview, the professor admits what the entertainment industry refuses to believe: there are multiple factors related to file sharing that impact entertainment sales. Some of it is as a substitution (people will download instead of buy) and some of it is as a promotion (people will use the free downloadable content to make a decision on what to buy). These two factors can compete. The professor wants to find out what the actual impact of these competing factors will be, while the industry refuses to believe that anyone could possibly use these tools for promotional value. It's a dangerous blindness to reality that doesn't bode well for them.
