Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental
Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental
05/05/2004 03:44 PMComcast will install Wi-Fi gear, configure a router, and rent it to
their customers with new program: Comcast Home Networking includes the
delivery and installation of Wi-Fi networking for a setup fee and $5
per month (covering the router and one PC Card). Setup costs $200 for
two computers up to $300 for five computers, the maximum covered by
this deal. A current discount program chops $100 off that price until
June 1. The terms and pricing don't explain the rental fee for the
second through fifth computers' hardware, referring to a "rate card"
that isn't on the Web site. The installation includes configuring and
setting a WEP encryption key for the network, a task which with
certain equipment can cause grown men and women to weep. There's
definitely a place for a service in which the equipment is covered
against defects. The site for the program doesn't note this, but
Comcast's overarching subscriber terms says, During the term of this
Agreement, Comcast will repair and maintain all Comcast Equipment and
you agree that the Comcast Equipment will not be serviced by anyone
other than Comcast employees or agents. Part of the press release
noted that this package, offered as $52.95 per month excluding the
rental fees and install fees, has up to 4 Mbps download speeds and 384
Kbps upload speeds. The basic package is $42.95 per month for 3 Mbps
down and 256Kbps up. These prices require a Comcast cable
subscription; it's $10 extra per month without such a subscription.
(Macintosh users need not apply.) Qwest DSL's comparable service is
$39.99/month for 1.5 Mbps down, 896 Kbps up (with Qwest phone
service). Qwest also offers a wireless option with less support and no
installation but without the rental cost: you just buy an Actiontec
device with 802.11g and DSL modem support built in....

Wi-Fi Alliance Adds Four EAP Types to
Certification
04/12/2005 10:44 AM EAP types define how 802.1X transaction are conducted with what
credentials and encryption: The Wi-Fi Alliance has added
EAP-TTLS/MSCHAPv2, PEAPv0/EAP-MSCHAPv2, PEAPv1/EAP-GTC, and EAP-SIM.
EAP-TLS has been a part of the certification testing since WPA was
introduced because, as one alliance member explained to me, you
couldn't test all of WPA without having at least one secured EAP type
involved so that 802.1X could be tested in a reasonable manner.
Devicescape and Meetinghouse supplicants join Funk and Microsoft
clients in the testbed. These several types represent most of the
secure EAP in use. Interestingly, this article says that WPA2 was
released in Sept. 2004. I know that certified devices have slowly been
hitting the market and mandatory inclusion of WPA2 is scheduled for
later this year. I was dealing with a new baby in September and so I
somehow missed this and subsequent WPA2 announcements, but so did many
of my colleagues. The press release notes that the alliance has
produced a white paper on deploying WPA and WPA2 in the enterprise,
which is surely good reading....

National Radiotape Network: 1960s
audiotape APA
12/02/2003 10:17 PMIn 1964, a group of Britons began the practice of producing homemade
"radio" programming -- light entertainment, music, etc -- and
recording them to reel-to-reel tape, and then passing them around to
their colleagues via the post. The club grew into something called the
National Radiotape Network, and now its archives are online.
In 1972, Transdiffusion merged with Electromusications, another
school-based tape recording network, running in the English midlands.
Over 20 years, Transdiffusion, with Electromusications, built up a
large collection of music, jingles and TV and radio presentation
material.
As the 1970s gave way to the 1980s, the fashion for circulating tapes
diminished, and the National Radiotape Network closed. Transdiffusion
was left with its own archives, together with the archives of its
defunct contributing member organisations, and the archives of the
Round the Horne Appreciation Society.
