FC Now: Everything's fair game 03/25/2005 06:57 AM

Television advertising is losing its absolute dominance. It no longer has the power it once had. I explored this phenomenon in another book of mine, BRANDchild. By the riper old age of 65, the average American consumer has watched two...

Everything's Fine

Just running a little behind today hence the lack of blog postings.  But Feedster is nearing in on the "100,000 posts indexed point" (I wonder if I can get fries with that).  Very cool.

Other random stuff I found interesting:

Everything's coming up Gandhi

Everything's coming up Gandhi 02/01/2005 08:38 PM
Xeni Jardin: Where's Mahatma Gandhi? According to this TV ad produced by Young and Rubicam Italia for an Italian telecom -- he's your new cellphone wallpaper! He's on laptops! He's on gigantic plasma screen displays affixed to the sides of buildings! Wait, now he's a ringtone! File under "tasteless corporate appropriation of the dead."

CLI for noobies: everything's a file

CLI for noobies: everything's a file 11/06/2003 12:18 PM
This is the third and final file-related article in the Linux CLI for noobies series. But before we remove our GUI water-wings and dive into the CLI end of the pool to solve the final file mystery, we'll do a quick recap of the series to-date to make sure everyone is up-to-snuff. I also want to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to our friends at Microsoft who are underlining the importance of getting out of the GUI box occasionally and feeling the power of CLI by deciding to "invent" a CLI for Leghorn. Or is that Foghorn? Whatever, it is the name Microsoft is using for their new vaporware OS. It's scheduled to launch in three years, so if the history of MS operating system launches are any guide, it should be here by 2009. And what a compliment that MS calls it "monad." Redmond touting the benefits of a CLI? Amazing. Who knows, maybe their lead designers have been among the noobies learning from this series all along.

Super Science Fair Projects: Complete Guide to Science Fair Projects, Topics and Experiments
http://www.super-sc ience-fair-projects.com/

Today your teacher announced that your school is going to have a science fair and students are responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel? Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project, rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Fair use, or not fair? 04/09/2004 04:09 PM
Last week we posted a story written by my colleague David Graham titled Proven: Windows is more secure than Linux. It was one of the better-read pieces on the site this week. Four days after the article was posted, David did a Google search and found more than half a dozen sites had linked to the piece -- flattering. But at least three sites posted all or a substantial portion of the piece on their own sites -- and that's a problem.

Jason Kottke was just on G4's Attack of the Show, and thanks to my hacked TiVo, it's available as a 85Mb MPEG2 torrent.

Jason did great for live TV, which is just about the most stressful thing in the world. He seemed relaxed, though the host seemed a little manic. I assume a producer was screaming in the host's ear to keep Jason moving, which caused the host to cut Jason off whenever he started sounding reflective. My favorite parts were the host violating the Adsense terms of service by goading people into clicking his ad links and the graphic "Blogging for Bling" in the background (because clearly, Jason's only in it for the benjamins).

I'm giving a couple of talks in Singapore in December and one of my kind hosts has sent me a form on which I'm to list every copyrighted and non-copyrighted source I use in the handouts, along with this explanation of what constitutes fair use in Singapore. I'd say that this is what we have to worry about our copyright law doing to the free expression of ideas, but I'm afraid you're going to tell me that this is in fact where our copyright law already is. Sigh....

Licensing and Fair Use 08/23/2004 10:05 AM

Fair Use and Misuse 08/27/2004 01:58 PM
