Book your bl0g

Book your bl0g 05/28/2004 09:32 AM
At the Personal Democracy Forum on Monday, Mathew Gross told me about LJBook, a tool that turns your blog into a printable PDF book. Then Stephen Fraser of LuLu.com sent me an email recommending LJBook; Lulu publishes and sells anyone's book. So I gave LJBook a try. It works. And it's free. It was designed initially for LiveJournal users, but there's a beta that works with MovableType. You have to entrust it with your MT name and password (it says it forgets the pwd after 30 mins), but if you're willing, you point it at your MT directory and...

Bush versus Reagan (Iraqi versus
American)

Bush versus Reagan (Iraqi versus
American)
07/17/2004 11:22 AM

A friend was complaining about Ronald Reagan yesterday, not completely mollified by his death.  What had Reagan done to bother her, I asked?  She was upset by Reagan's appointments to the Supreme Court, by his inaction on AIDS, and a variety of other domestic issues.  How could she hate Reagan more than Bush? "Bush is out there messing up foreign countries instead of our own."

Despite not having voted for either man, I discovered a strong personal preference for Reagan over Bush II.  Reagan was an American working on American problems.  Maybe he didn't do as good a job as we would have liked, but at least he was trying.  Bush, on the other hand, projects an image of spending all of his time and energy thinking about Iraq and Iraqis.  The only explanation that makes sense is that Bush is actually an Iraqi.  Who other than an Iraqi would be so interested in Iraq?  When W. is not talking about Iraq he is often talking about Jesus so probably he is an Assyrian Christian, one of the groups that lived in Iraq before the Arab invasion (background< /A>).

Perhaps Kerry and Edwards have a chance after all because they are running against a foreigner.

[Note:  there is some chance that Bush is Kuwaiti or Saudi rather than Iraqi.  The owners of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia were badly inconvenienced by Saddam.  There was a New York Times article right after the 1991 Gulf War where they talked about how the Emir of Kuwait would marry a 13- or 14-year-old girl every Friday night and then divorce her on Saturday and that this was the kind of lifestyle that American troops were supporting by giving Kuwait back to the Emir--you could understand why the Emir, even with $billions in foreign bank accounts, was so anxious to have his country back.  Still, there were never too many Christians in Kuwait or Saudi Arabia so evidence points back to W. being an Iraqi]

Professor Terry Fisher's new book is the most serious, comprehensive treatment of the alternatives we face for protecting copyright in a digital age. While it's famous for his particular solution, it is most effective when you see his solution against the background of the complete set of alternatives that he surveys. I think this book deserves extremely serious consideration by all who think seriously about this issue. I've asked Terry to guest blog during the week of October 24, but I'd encourage people to look at the book before then. His publisher has permitted him to make only two chapters available freely. You can find them on his website. You can also get the book at Amazon.

Xeni Jardin: Wired Magazine's editor-in-chief Chris Anderson says:
I've signed a deal to do The Long Tail book with Hyperion (in the US--Random House will be publishing it in the UK and others TBA elsewhere). I should be turning in the manuscript next fall for a spring 2006 release. Following John Battelle's great example, I'm starting The Long Tail blog to help me preview my book thinking and research in public and to tap the wisdom of crowds on this rich subject.

10th-century Japanese text "The Pillow

10th-century Japanese text "The Pillow
Book" becomes a bl0g
07/27/2004 12:25 AM
A blogger named Simon Cozens is translating the classic Japanese text The Pillow Book (Makura no Soshi) by Sei Shonagon into English and republishing it as a blog. It's easy to forget the fact that these words were written in the tenth century, because the results in this format read -- well, rather like a blog. Some dates are fictitous, and some liberties have been taken to produce a coherent narrative stream in blog format -- but the content is purported to be a faithful translation of the original. Since I speak neither contemporary nor classical Japanese, I'll have to take this blogger (or someone wiser)'s word for it. And no, I'm sorry -- Ewan McGregor has nothing to do with this one. Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

Thanks, Bloggies! BB wins best group
bl0g, and bl0g of the year!
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won Group Weblog of the Year at the Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in their honor: check 'em all out. On behalf of my blog-mates Cory Doctorow, Mark Frauenfelder, and David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager" John Battelle; our sysadmin par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to SXSW in person to accept the award, but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at ETCON ( all five of us will be in the same place for the first time). Boing Boing sprouted online a little over five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come. Link

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the year/best weblog overall†– congratulations!" For those keeping track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.
