Valve Software Bullying Cybercafes

Valve Software Bullying Cybercafes 06/11/2004 05:34 PM
Ernest Miller writes "Yesterday, Valve CEO Gabe Newell thanked the gaming coummunity for helping to catch those responsible for the theft of Half-Life 2 code by saying, "Everyone here at Valve is once again reminded of how much we owe to the gaming community." What he didn't say was that Valve was demonstrating its appreciation by threatening to sue a cybercafe that was offering Valve's Counter-Strike as one of the games people could play. Companies like Microsoft often let cybercafes offer their games as long as they buy each copy of the game they use. At the other end of the scale, Valve charges more than most cybercafes can afford to let them use 5-year old, freely downloadable as a mod, games. Furthermore, instead of merely sending a cease and desist letter ("knock it off or we will sue"), Valve sent a prepay us for a license or we'll sue letter. In other words, unless the cybercafe pays for a one-year license, they will be sued. The next time you don't find any Valve games at your local LAN center, you'll know why. Perhaps fans of LAN gaming and the professional gaming leagues ought to consider whether Valve's aggressive, overbearing stance towards LAN centers is helpful to the gaming community or not. "

Free WiFi coming to Best Western 01/24/2004 08:19 PM
Every Best Western hotel in the US, Canada and the Caribbean will have free open WiFi by Sept 1. Tell you what, I've got a new default choice for hotels when I travel. Let's start finding ways of holding conferences at BW's instead of high-ticket Hyatts and Marriotts with their craptacular $10/day WiFi.
"It's the No. 1 amenity requested by virtually everyone, especially businesspeople, said Tom Higgins, CEO and president of the Phoenix-based hotel chain. "High-speed Internet for free is going to be where it's at."

Mobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchi
http://ope nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdf

Abstract by Author:
Free/open source software (F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open disclosure.

I few weeks ago, I was asked to write something about Kurt Cobain for Black Table.com, because today is the ten year anniversary of his suicide.

I am always flattered and grateful when someone asks me to contribute to something, because it makes me feel like a "real" writer, but I often have to decline, because writing takes time, and time is something I just don't have right now.

This was different, though, because I thought I had an interesting take on Kurt Cobain's death, so I accepted. I wrote it up, re-wrote it, and then got buried in the Star Trek convention and forgot to send it in until one day after the deadline.

So it didn't make the article, which is a drag, because the other writers are all respected and they all wrote great things. It would have been cool to be alongside them. They tell me it was cut for space . . . but I just read the other contributions, and it's pretty clear to me that I'm not yet in their league.

I'm thrilled that I've had this realization while I'm at the tail end of a rewrite, and I'm terrified about the "sophomore slump." Hooray.

But since I already put the work into it, it seems stupid to just file it off in the "never got published" directory. Here it is . . .

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools 05/17/2004 10:25 AM

Open Source: Open Source Scripting Made Easy: This is an article about PHP scripting tools that makes an important point:

Commercial scripting languages have drawn success from powerful and widely used development tools: ASP has Visual Studio, ColdFusion has Macromedia's Dreamweaver, and JSP has a variety of tools from commercial sources such as Borland and open source projects such as Eclipse and NetBeans. PHP's enormous success, however, is not tied to specific tools.

Some friends of mine have been working with Microsoft's .Net platform. They tell me it's amazing ("fan-friggin'-tastic," one of them called it). This is great, but I guess I don't like anything where the barrier to entry is so high — first you have to have a Windows server, then you have to have the Windows dev environment.

I code PHP in EditPlus, which cost me all of $30, and that was an optional purchase because there are so many other free alternatives. Maybe I'm just a snob. Via PHP|Architect.
