A New Online Community in Hong Kong

A New Online Community in Hong Kong 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
As you may know, I teach each fall at the University of Hong Kong's Journalism & Media Studies Centre, helping out with a new media course led by Andrew Lih, a professor there. The student project this year is especially interesting, I think. Here's the text of a release being sent out to various folks.
Chatter Garden, an online community for news and discussion about Hong Kong regional politics and public affairs, is now live. The English language site was created as a University of Hong Kong student project for the New Media Workshop, part of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre. Visitors are encouraged to engage in online community dialogue, writing weblog entries and moderating stories. The Web site creation was directed by assistant professor Andrew Lih and visiting lecturer Dan Gillmor, author of the book, "We the Media." While Hong Kong has one of the most free media environments in East Asia and China, there are surprisingly few forums for public discourse. Chatter Garden was inspired by other online citizen journalism projects, such as OhmyNews (Korea), Malaysiakini and DailyKOS (US) to engage citizens in discussing regional public affairs. Topics include politics, economy, culture, and "One country, Two systems." Chatter Garden is named after "Chater Garden," the park next to the government Legislative Council building, and a popular gathering place for local political rallies.
I'm proud of the students' work, and hope you'll check out the site.

Titles included in this database cover a wide range of disciplines including law, medicine and education. The University of Hong Kong Libraries, with a rich collection of Hong Kong journals, developed this database with the objectives of facilitating efficient information retrieval and preserving archival materials. Issues included in this database vary from journal to journal with the earliest going back to 1872. At its first release, more than 170,000 images from over 40 titles will be accessible on the database. More titles with permission granted for digitising their full text will be included to the database. New issues of the titles will also be added as soon as being received. Scholars doing research on Hong Kong will find this an invaluable resource. This has been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer Information Blog. This will be added to

Hong Kong maids are expected to be
    sysadmins
    12/16/2003 10:07 AM
Maids in Hong Kong can draw a higher salary if they're computer-literate enough to defrag hard-drives, reinstall OSes, and do other sysadminly chores. Well, so much for geeks as the lords of creation. It was nice while it lasted.
The demand for maids who are able to clean up the fridge and the hard drive has been driven by the surge in computer use and the numbers of children now doing their homework on computer...

But some have rebelled against the shift to computer-literate cleaners. "There's too much pressure," said Sally Yip, 47, from the Philippines, who has been in Hong Kong for 15 years and has earned a reputation for her cleaning allied with her computer skills. "I was coming home with a headache and arguing with my husband. I was offered a job with an international law firm but I turned it down. It wasn't about how much they could offer," she said, "I enjoy the babies and doing the ironing."
