New WNN Blogs: Cell Data, VoWLAN, MIMO+N

New WNN Blogs: Cell Data, VoWLAN, MIMO+N 03/24/2005 11:23 PM

We've launched another three Weblogs on wireless: We're committed here at Wi-Fi Networking News, otherwise known as WNN, to cover and offer the widest array of reporting on wireless networking, whatever the standard. Several weeks ago, we added WiMax Networking News and WNN Europe to the mix to better separate the increasing number of stories in that area. Today, we've started the engine on three new topics that are of high interest to our readers. As with our other new blogs, you can see the most recent headlines at the right side of any page on any of our sites. Cell Data News will cover developments in 2G, 2.5G, 3G, and beyond in the U.S. and around the world. Voice over WLAN is voice over IP (VoIP) over wireless LAN, but VoWLAN is the most common abbreviation. Many enterprises, schools, and homes are adopting different forms of VoWLAN to make roaming with voice as seamless as roaming with data without the issues and costs of interior cellular voice coverage. MIMO + N News is the central point for details on the coming IEEE 802.11n standard for increasing wireless network throughput through the use of MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) antenna arrays alongside a variety of other technical improvements. MIMO devices have hit the market, but 802.11n is as long as two years away. We'll chart the course of both the market and the standard....

VoWLAN Study Group?

VoWLAN Study Group? 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
Voice over WLAN vendors have asked the IEEE to start a VoWLAN-specific study group: Currently, aspects of 802.11 related to the needs of VoWLAN are broken out in 802.11e (quality of service or packet prioritization and scheduling), 802.11f (inter-access point communication, which includes fast handoff of authenticated users), and 802.11i (encryption). Voice calls need very fast handoff as users roam, and the current standards are apparently not focused specifically enough for some vendors. As expected, Cisco has its own proprietary plans, yadda yadda yadda....

Data Backup For Cell Phones

Data Backup For Cell Phones 07/07/2004 04:44 AM
New software will allow cell phone users to back up/edit SIM data without having to be bound to their keypad. With this software, you will have support for a variety of SIM card types and styles. This will certainly be handy, especially for backing up cell phone data such as address book contents and other important information. If I had a dollar for every time I have lost my data due to a bad SIM. Grrr.

Telesym Podcast: the Future of VoWLAN

Telesym Podcast: the Future of VoWLAN 03/14/2005 05:47 PM
If you're interested in where Voice over IP over WLAN is heading in the enterprise, listen to this interview with Telesym: I met over in Bellevue, Wash., today with Telesym, a firm that extends an enterprise-based phone exchange (PBX) system into laptops, handhelds, and "scanners": bar-code devices used in retail and logistics by store and floor personnel. I spoke with Mike Houston, Telesym's director of Marketing, Ken Myer, senior VP of sales and marketing, and Jennifer Gehrt, a founding partner at Communiqué Public Relations about Telesym's position in the market, but more largely about the future of VoWLAN. (Ken had to leave for a meeting, so I spoke primarily with Mike in this podcast). You'll hear at the outset of the recording after my introduction a conversation we had using Telesym technology: I was on a USB headset connected to a Telesym client running under Mac OS X; Mike was on a cellular phone. I had the recorder up to the headphone on the headset; next time, I'll plug the recorder into the line out on the laptop to better demonstrate the quality. The audio file is available as an 8 MB MP3 download, a 6 MB MP3 compressed with ZIP, or your podcast-capable news reader should already have identified it....

Netopia to Certify VoWLAN Phones

Netopia to Certify VoWLAN Phones 01/23/2004 04:14 PM
Netopia said it has created a voice over Wi-Fi phone certification program: The program will certify that voice over Wi-Fi phones interoperate with Netopia's VoIP gateways. This is fine for Netopia, but doesn't guarantee that such phones will interoperate with gateways from any VoIP gateway. The CNET reporter who wrote this article could afford to think a bit more critically rather than buying hook, line, and sinker everything companies tell her. The story reads like an advertisement for voice over Wi-Fi. She says here: "Some experts predict that cordless Wi-Fi phones could eventually replace cellular phones." I'd love to know who those experts are. Wi-Fi is a local area networking technology and it's ridiculous to imagine that it would ever cover the same amount of area as a cell phone network....

Cell Carriers Quietly Drop Data Plan
Prices
04/23/2004 09:52 PM
The Feature notes that cell data prices have dropped, quietly: A few weeks ago, it was $80 per month for unlimited data from those who offered unlimited plans, with lower fees only for metered services. Cingular offered no unlimited service. In the face of faster national networks and Verizon Wireless's commitment coupled with T-Mobile ($20/month) and Sprint PCS ($15/month) pricing, The Feature's Eric Lin notes a host of small changes. Verizon Wireless is now down to $50/month for 1xRTT, but still charges $80/month for PC Card-based 1xEvDO. Cingular plummeted its GRPS and limited EDGE to $20 per month (but it's not listed as such on their site yet). AT&T Wireless is offering GPRS/EDGE at $45/month. To quote Mike Masnick of TechDirt, So, now it seems that the entry point for the highest speed is $80, then you drop to $50 when there's a bit of competition, and down to about $20 when your service doesn't have much to distinguish itself any more....

Belkin Goes MIMO

Belkin Goes MIMO 08/09/2004 12:49 AM
Belkin will use Airgo's MIMO technology for consumer products, News.com reports: The multiple-in, multiple-out technology that Airgo is bringing to market has other manufacturers signed on, but Belkin is the first well-known, mass-market brand name planning--reportedly--to sell Airgo-based equipment. The gateway will be $179 and the client card $129; they will be available in mid-October. Airgo's equipment supports 802.11g, and its own faster, further proprietary technology. Airgo claims a fourfold increase in throughput and range: they told me months ago that their 108 Mbps proprietary flavor has a throughput that's much, much higher than competing proprietary extensions. The proof is in the performance. Airgo justifies the higher price their added value brings at this stage in Wi-Fi's development by the greater coverage area. However, you need new client cards to take full advantage, which offsets some of the cost savings of more coverage area....

NetGear Adds MIMO

NetGear Adds MIMO 01/05/2005 11:17 AM
MIMO is cropping up all over: NetGear is the latest to announce a MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) product. They're partnering with Video54. Linksys has apparently chosen Airgo. Samsung and Athena announced single-chip silicon yesterday. The near-term problem with MIMO isn't with the technology itself, but rather the non-standard higher speed modes. No one is claiming interference, but these modes won't be certified by The Wi-Fi Alliance or any other group. That means interoperability, even among devices made by manufacturers using the same silicon isn't assured. The worst part, in my estimation, is that this generation of MIMO technology isn't what the final 802.11n specification will look like. So purchasing MIMO today except for specific applications in which you need substantially higher throughput and range from a single device over interoperable, certified 802.11g means you're buying a dead-on device. 802.11n might achieve speeds of several hundred megabytes per second, and there's is practically a total certainty that the final 802.11n won't be just a firmware upgrade, but rather a difference in both hardware and silicon compared to today's MIMO devices....

Airgo Has Manufacturers for Its MIMO

Airgo Has Manufacturers for Its MIMO 06/11/2004 08:38 PM
Airgo will be the first company to the hit the market with multiple-in, multiple-out wireless systems for consumers: The MIMO approach has started to achieve traction, with it likely being the basis for 802.11n, a high-throughput IEEE standard in progres. When you build antennas and wireless access points, you can increase signal strength, decrease noise inside the chips, or improve antennas--or all three, among other technqiues. By integrating the signal from several antennas, MIMO effectively increases the range through better receptivity and interpretation. It's all interrelated. While Airgo has received plenty of press, so did Vivato and Etherlinx, both of which firms have had rocky roads on their way to production units which didn't seem to live up to early expectations. Airgo, however, has continued to pursue its same initial goals, and products will start appearing through distributor and manufacturing partners in July, according to the News.com article. In an interview in April with CEO Greg Raleigh, he told Wi-Fi Networking News that consumer products based on Airgo's first generation might cost a bit more--possibly $50 more for an access point--but offer such a greater range even in the Wi-Fi bands that a user might need a single access points instead of two or three, a common problem for even moderately large or old homes. Raleigh also said that while their current generation of product handles 802.11g and its own 100+ Mbps proprietary flavor, he expects the next generation to offer multiples of that speed. Airgo's 100+ Mbps offering has a net throughput of 45 Mbps, he said....

Airespace Offers MIMO

Airespace Offers MIMO 05/25/2004 01:30 PM
Airespace will offer multiple-in, multiple-out antennas for its access points later this year: The Intelligent RF Access Point (IRAP) will ship third quarter, and uses the MIMO technology to extend range. MIMO was pioneered by Airgo, which has not supplied the technology for IRAP; Airgo expects to have manufacturers incorporating their MIMO reference design in the next few months. MIMO uses multiple input and output antennas to better sort out actual signal from noise, which can effectively extend range. It works best in combination with both client adapter and access point incorporating MIMO, but there are benefits for an access point by itself. Airespace is effectively either reducing the number of access points an enterprise needs (although raising its per unit price tag), or offering better overlapping coverage in the same areas increasing throughput for a network....

PC World, Mobile Pipeline on MIMO

PC World, Mobile Pipeline on MIMO 03/14/2005 05:47 PM
PC World's advice: go MIMO if you need range: A very sensible array of advice from Becky Waring over at PC World based on testing several of the current MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) Wi-Fi gateways and adapters on the market. Waring offers the same recommendation that I have, which is that for homes or small businesses for which the price premium overcomes the cost and/or hassle of installing many individual access points, a MIMO gateway makes a great deal of sense. I would add that for networks in which throughput over Wi-Fi is a significant issue over short distances (up to about 50 feet), MIMO is the only technology on the market that can increase throughput even with existing 802.11g cards to their highest level at their greatest distance. If you don't need range or speed and adding access points is not a big deal--you have Ethernet installed throughout a house or office or understand how to configure Wireless Distribution System and can deal with its limitations--then the price premium is probably worth sitting on your wallet as the cost of this technology drops rapidly because of unit sales and competition. Meanwhile, Mobile Pipeline's editor writes about MIMO's early use in business: It's not ready for the enterprise yet, but even consumer-scale and early small-office MIMO gear has unmistakable benefits in certain cases that Haskin lists....

Linksys Uses Airgo MIMO in New Product

Linksys Uses Airgo MIMO in New Product 01/04/2005 02:27 AM
Linksys adds Airgo's MIMO technology in their WRT54GX: The new product isn't be advertised as pre-802.11n, as Belkin's version is, but it does claim it can achieve as much as three times the range and eight times the throughput. Belkin's package of Airgo technology has gotten fairly positive reviews from many sources that like the performance that the router provides for non-MIMO cards. The one major exception is from David Haskin, editor-in-chief of Mobile Pipeline, who found erratic performance, especially in using the PC Card in non-pre-N environments. [link via Reuters]...

Tom's Networking Reviews NetGear MIMO
Router
04/11/2005 01:03 PM
Tim Higgins of Tom's Networking offers his exhaustive look at the NetGear RangeMax Wireless Router: This device uses Atheros's Super G technology combined with Video54's multiple antenna approach. The folks at Airgo say that Video54's MIMO isn't MIMO because it doesn't support spatial multiplexing (multiple signals taking different paths over the same frequencies). Video54 says multiple antennas are multiple antennas; they're using a phase-array approach per packet in which each packet can be sent through a different antenna combination. The device has a street price of just $118, far below its "true MIMO" competitors. Higgins thinks that the device delivers on some but not all of its claims, and that because four different technologies are involved (three from Atheros then Video54 on top) he has some issues with the simplicity of it, too. He doesn't know which technologies need to be turned on, off, or changed in order to achieve the best results with that combination. That's a key advantage for the True MIMO line of products using Airgo chips: it's essentially one technology that wraps around all these ideas while delivering better results....
