How I use FeedDemon to Receive Podcasts

How I use FeedDemon to Receive Podcasts

How I use FeedDemon to Receive Podcasts 03/24/2005 06:17 PM

A couple of months ago I posted about how I use FeedDemon, and since it was a fairly popular post I thought I'd share with you how I use FeedDemon 1.5 to receive podcasts and sync them with my iPod.

In his article Payloads for RSS, Dave Winer talked about how RSS enclosures were intended to be downloaded while your computer is inactive (such as in the middle of the night). FeedDemon certainly supports this idea by enabling you to schedule your downloads, but I have to confess that I rarely use this feature anymore. I download only a handful of new podcasts every day, so I just let each download start right away. And although FeedDemon enables you to automatically download enclosures for specific feeds, I seldom use this feature since there aren't many feeds whose podcasts I always want to hear (in fact, I believe I only have automatic downloads enabled for my IT Conversations feed).

Instead, when there's a podcast I might want to listen to, I simply cick the enclosure icon to add it to my FeedStation download queue. I also make use of the fact that I can drag-and-drop a media link onto FeedStation to add it to the download queue. Chances are that most FeedDemon users don't know about that feature, but it's extremely handy - I regularly find myself drag-and-dropping MP3 links from Firefox onto FeedStation (note that this works from IE as well).

I generally add podcasts to my download queue throughout the day, and I have FeedDemon configured to automatically copy the downloaded podcasts to my iPod (although in the past I used this feature to copy downloads to my Creative Nomad as well). I then take my iPod with me the next morning, so that I can listen to the new podcasts after I drop off my kids at school.

Mark Frauenfelder: WfmuDoron of WFMU sez: "WFMU, one of the nation's finest radio stations (and home to lots of boing-boing friendly music) has just launched podcast.wfmu.org. As you probably already know, some broadcast radio stations, BBC, NPR, WGBH have dabbled in podcasting, usually offering random clips or the odd talk show... WFMU is making seven of its shows available for podcast including three music shows.

"Two of the music shows (Antique Phonograph Music Program) and Thomas Edison's Attic consist of DJs hand-cranking old turntables to play cylinders and records dating from the 1880s to the 1920s and should hopefully fall under public domain while the third "Advanced D & D with Donna Summer" (aka Jason Forrest) plays breakcore and random CD-Rs from all over the place.

"The station would very much like to offer all of it's content for podcasting but like other people, we're a bit concerned about the legal ramifications. In any case, we're very excited to be offering our content in a way that allows listeners to hear our programs when and where they want to. hope you guys like it." Link

The Republican National Committee is pushing a podcast of Bob Dole talking about his new memoir, One Soldier's Story, part of a series on "new books by accomplished conservative authors." When I was a kid and there were still liberal Republicans such as Nelson Rockefeller, the joke about conservatives such as Barry Goldwater was that their idea of progress was putting an AM radio into their buggies. NEASIST Podcasts Now Available 06/05/2005 11:24 PM

If you are subscribed to the NEASIST blog with a podcast-capable aggregator, you already have the MP3s on your hard drive, but for everyone else, the files are now available at the following links:

Megan’s Talk (22.8 MB, 1:06:10 minutes)

My Talk (20.6 MB, 59:54 minutes)

Michael’s Talk (18.2 MB, 52.50 minutes)

Panel Discussion and Questions (12.1 MB, 35:08 minutes)

There’s also a repost that pulls together all of the Powerpoint presentations, so you can follow along if you’re at a computer. I haven’t listened to them yet, but I’m not sure my podcast will work very well without viewing the slides because I use so many screenshots to illustrate my points.

Thanks to the NEASIST crew for all of their hard work on this and to my co-presenters for making it such an interesting day!

ANN: FeedStation 1.6 Beta and "My
Podcasts"

ANN: FeedStation 1.6 Beta and "My
Podcasts"
06/24/2005 03:36 PM

FeedStation 1.6Today we announced a new beta version of FeedStation, which until now has strictly been FeedDemon's podcast client. As of today, FeedStation supports NewsGator Online, our free web-based aggregator, and it will soon be supported by NewsGator Outlook Edition.

Using FeedStation 1.6 with NewsGator Online

If you're a NewsGator Online user, you may have noticed this innocent looking folder hanging out under your clippings:

My Podcasts folder

This new "My Podcasts" folder is where you store podcasts you want to listen to. Getting podcasts into this folder is easy - just click the new "Add to Podcasts" icon that appears below any item that contains an enclosu re, like the one shown below:

Adding to My Podcasts

Starting with the new beta, FeedStation will (optionally) poll your My Podcasts folder for new podcasts and automatically download them to your iPod or Windows Media Player device. Geek that I am, I love the idea that you can add to My Podcasts on one computer and have FeedStation on another computer, copying stuff to your iPod for you.

If you're new to FeedStation - or the whole podcasting thing in general - you'd probably like a little help getting started. The first thing you'll need is a set of feeds that contain podcast enclosures. If you're logged into NewsGator Online, just click the link below to import an OPML file containing several podcast feeds:

http://www.bradsoft.co m/feeds/opml/Podcasters.opml

The first time you run FeedStation after downloading it, it will ask for your NewsGator Online user name and password and automatically enable the My Podcasts integration for you. However, you'll need to let FeedStation know which media player you want the podcasts copied to - to do this, select Tools > Options, then switch to the Podcasts tab. This page on my site provides the rest of the details.

Using FeedStation 1.6 with FeedDemon

If you're a FeedDemon user, upgrading the bundled copy of FeedStation to the new beta version is easy - just download and install it, and it will replace your existing version. Although you can click "Skip" on the welcome screen to use FeedStation without a NewsGator Online account, you'll obviously need an account if you want to try the My Podcasts integration. As promised in last month's announcement, you'll get a free two-year business standard subscription - but I'm afraid we're still working on making this quick and easy for you (sorry it's taking so long, folks - shouldn't be much longer now). So, for now, you can simply sign up for a free consumer standard plan, then we'll switch you over to the free business plan once it's available.

Giving Due Credit

For almost a decade now I've been used to announcing things that I created by myself, but this time I'm announcing something that involved several of my NewsGator co-workers. So I'd like to acknowledge the late nights of development work by Darryl Dreiling and Doug Furcht, QA work by Katriana Hutchison and Ria Kaur, and oversight by Ed Jukkola that was required to make this happen. Nice job, folks :)

Update: Here's Greg Reinacker's post about the new FeedStation.

Podscope will crawl the web to look for podcasts.  When it finds one, it will create an index against every word within the content.  Users will be able to search for a term or phrase and the program will generate a list of ranked results, providing the most relevant podcasts as well as links to play or download the content. TVEyes has been indexing both radio and television broadcasts since 1999. Podcasts are essentially downloadable radio programs distributed through RSS that can be put onto a digital media music player or iPod.

ANN: FeedDemon 1.10

ANN: FeedDemon 1.10 06/07/2004 05:42 AM

I'm pleased to announce the final release of FeedDemon 1.10. Among the highlights in this new release are:

  • Support for Atom feeds
  • A new integrated web search
  • The ability to search previously downloaded feed items
  • Improved browser features such as popup blocking and form auto-completion
  • Enhanced grouping and styling of feed items

In addition to these "big" new features, version 1.10 offers a lot of smaller tweaks that really boost FeedDemon's usability. A complete list of what's new can be found in the release notes, but be sure to watch the FeedDemon Tips blog over the next week since we'll be highlighting a number of new features that you might overlook.

If you already own FeedDemon 1.0, the upgrade to version 1.10 is free - just download the new trial version and install it on top of the previous version, and you're set to go. Your serial number, channel subscriptions and other information will all be retained.

My thanks and appreciation go to everyone who not only tested FeedDemon, but also stuck with me during that nasty little episode with the neck surgery. A couple months back I had no idea when I'd be able to get FeedDemon 1.10 out the door, so I'm really glad to announce that it's done :)

PS: If you have any questions about the new release, please visit the web-based forums for help. I'll also be updating the FeedDemon FAQ over the next few days to address common questions about 1.10.

FeedDemon 1.10 RC5 05/31/2004 12:35 PM

Okay, I lied about RC4 being the last FeedDemon 1.10 pre-release :) Out of necessity, I'm making one last pre-release available. RC5 contains a number of fixes related to how Japanese characters are displayed, and it also includes a new "Web Search" feature along with support for IE's form auto-completion.

If you encounter a bug in RC5, let me know by posting in the FeedDemon Support Forum. Please include 1.10RC5 in the subject line of any message you post about this pre-release.

Note: Translators, I apologize for yet another change, but there are two new strings in this release. If you'd prefer not to send me new FDLANGs, please feel free to simply email me the translations for the strings shown below.

ANN: FeedDemon 1.5 RC2 02/01/2005 08:43 PM

If you run into any problems using this pre-release, please let me know by posting in the FeedDem on 1.5 Beta Forum.

FeedDemon 1.10 RC4

FeedDemon 1.10 RC4 05/21/2004 08:36 AM

FeedDemon 1.10 RC4 is now available to registered users.

  • Added: Generic "Date" column to news item list, which contains pubDate if it exists, received date otherwise. This new column isthe only date column shown by default - both the "received" and "published" columns are hidden. This also affects the default sorting and grouping (both are now set to the generic date), which may change how you're used to seeing news items sorted.
  • Changed: The default newspaper filter is now "Unread News" instead of "Today's News"
  • Changed: The default value for automatically marking items as read has changed from five seconds to three seconds
  • Changed: The cleanup wizard now remembers your selections
  • Changed: Double-clicking a news item navigates the news item's link if the item newspaper is showing, otherwise it re-displays the news item newspaper (change in RC3's behavior)
  • Fixed: FeedDemon now correctly handles xml:base in Atom entries and passes all the link tests at http://diveintomark.org/tmp/tests/wellformed/base/links-in-content.xml and http://diveintomark.org/tmp/tests/wellformed/base/links.xml
  • Fi xed: "Previous unread channel" shortcut skips topmost channel
When you're ready to download RC4, stop by the FeedDemon beta site.

FeedDemon 1.0 RC2

FeedDemon 1.0 RC2 05/07/2004 08:41 PM

FeedDemon 1.10 RC2 is now available from the FeedDemon beta site. As with all version 1.10 pre-releases, RC2 is only available to those who have purchased version 1.0.

RC2 fixes a number of bugs, including several related to Atom newsfeeds. For complete details on what's new, please check out the relea se notes.

Note: Because my new web-based forums are still being tested, it's probably better if everyone continues to post comments about v1.10 in the newsgroups. But if you'd prefer to post in the forums and understand that your messages may be deleted once the forums go live, please feel free to use the FeedDemon 1.10 Beta forum. I'll reply to messages in either location.
