How NOT to Market WiFi in Libraries
How NOT to Market WiFi in Libraries
12/12/2003 10:21 AMMarketing
Wireless in Libraries
"Someone on Web4Lib asked about posting symbols or signage to
identify wireless access in libraries. This is a slightly revised
version of my reply on the list, sent after several folks referred the
original poster to the wireless warchalking
symbols popular among the digerati.
Essentially, this is basic library marketing 101. If you're
planning to market wireless services not only to the folks who will
seek it, but to folks who would either find a way to use it if they
knew what it was or may never even use it but will mentally file this
service under 'what a great library this is,' then integrate the fancy
symbols with very plainspoken, large, plain-lettered wording. Go to a
site that offers wireless for its customers and see how they peddle
it. (Remember, that's what you're doing: selling a service.)
Make the language achingly clear. 'Wireless hotspot' comes to
mind... but maybe something else makes more sense locally. Assuming
you have a bookmark or brochure advertising this service, repeat the
logo and the phrase throughout the materials. I know that libraries
offer things for free anyway, but why not push that as well?
Wireless--FREE!...
Or you could practice another kind of library marketing, and either
put up one tiny, very obscure sign, or make it very large and then
title it 'Bibligraphic WEP-enabled 802.11* Access.' And in your
assessment of the service, observe that very few people use it. ;)

tragically funny.
How To Lose The WiFi Market: Forget That
Competition Exists
How To Lose The WiFi Market: Forget That
Competition Exists
08/27/2004 02:00 PMAgere, a spinoff of Lucent (itself a spinoff of AT&T), helped define
and create the WiFi market, but now holds a fairly small portion of
the market, and is the number five seller of WiFi chips. In taking a
look at
how Agere "lost" the WiFi market, it simply
appears that they weren't ready for competition from plenty of other
companies -- including a company with a lot more money: Intel. While
the article makes some suggestions (confusion after spinning off their
WiFi product business to focus on just chips, taking their eye off the
ball to focus on not going bankrupt), the more realistic explanation
simply seems to be that they didn't expect as much competition in the
marketplace as they received. If anything, it sounds like, by
"inventing" the market, they expected to keep it forever. They also
seem particularly miffed at Intel's marketing campaign to co-opt WiFi
into their Centrino brand -- leading many people to believe that Intel
created WiFi. When you're blaming your competitor's ability to
outmarket you as the reason you lost a market (especially when it's an
emerging market), it suggests the company simply wasn't prepared to
compete at all.

Cisco May Buy Airespace
Cisco May Buy Airespace
01/06/2005 09:59 AM I've been saying it for months and months: It's been crystal clear to
me that Cisco did not have an internal WLAN switch strategy, and has
its biggest problems in dealing with issues that switches can solve,
which is policy-based VLAN assignment for WLAN users across network
segments. News.com reports that a deal may be in the work for Cisco to
buy Airespace, which is the leading marketshare vendor among the
startup switch makers with seven percent of the market. I've thought
Airespace was a 100-percent Cisco target, and am just surprised its
taken this long to hear about a deal firming up. Cisco's intelligence
is in the access point, which means that hand-offs are coordinated at
the AP level, making VLAN roaming and other related issues pushed out
to the edge or handled by Ethernet switches, which doesn't work very
well for mobile users. Airespace handles the logical part of this in
the switch: the AP is a radio with some intelligence, but it's not the
smartest part of the network. Cisco has obviated some of its
shortcomings in this area--and, of course, it has massive strengths in
other areas--by turning WLSE, its centralized management tool, into as
much of a switch-like controller for signal strength and other factors
as it can. [link via Brian W.]...
Airespace Teams with IBM
Airespace Teams with IBM
09/17/2004 12:24 PMAirespace, the wireless LAN switch maker, formed a partnership with
IBM: The deal will open the door for Airespace to market its products
to IBM customers. Among startup WLAN switch vendors, Airespace has
scored some notable deals. It has OEM agreements with Alcatel, Nortel,
NEC, and a co-development deal with D-Link. Some other switch makers
have also scored big-name deals as well. Trapeze recently announced
that it formed an OEM deal with 3Com that is expected to blossom into
a co-development relationship. Observers have been expecting a
shake-out in the WLAN switch market essentially since the segment was
born because it appears that there are too many startups for the
market to support. Partnerships with big-name vendors certainly adds
credibility to the startups which can in turn help them raise
financing and potentially stay in business....

Airespace Offers MIMO
Airespace Offers MIMO
05/25/2004 01:30 PMAirespace will offer multiple-in, multiple-out antennas for its access
points later this year: The Intelligent RF Access Point (IRAP) will
ship third quarter, and uses the MIMO technology to extend range. MIMO
was pioneered by Airgo, which has not supplied the technology for
IRAP; Airgo expects to have manufacturers incorporating their MIMO
reference design in the next few months. MIMO uses multiple input and
output antennas to better sort out actual signal from noise, which can
effectively extend range. It works best in combination with both
client adapter and access point incorporating MIMO, but there are
benefits for an access point by itself. Airespace is effectively
either reducing the number of access points an enterprise needs
(although raising its per unit price tag), or offering better
overlapping coverage in the same areas increasing throughput for a
network....
3Com, Trapeze Team Up
3Com, Trapeze Team Up
08/16/2004 07:48 PM3Com's decision to partner with Trapeze on WLAN switches may be
further evidence that the WLAN switch is here to stay: 3Com said today
that it formed a partnership with Trapeze which will initially be an
OEM agreement but in the future will migrate into a co-development
relationship. 3Com also expects to include Trapeze software into some
of its platforms. "The growth of this market is very attractive," said
Brent Nixon, director of product management for 3Com. He expects the
WLAN switch market to continue to grow and believes that having a
switch will allow 3Com to better target the educational, healthcare,
enterprise, and public access markets. The WLAN switch market started
out as an industry crowded with startups and many experts said the
market was likely to consolidate. So far, however, the switch makers
aren't being bought up by more established players nor are they going
out of business. They are getting creative though. AirFlow, for
example, stopped making its switch and said it would instead try to
license its software to former competitors or other vendors. Airespace
made a deal with NEC where NEC is selling a converged wireless voice
and data platform that incorporates Airespace's WLAN switch. Airespace
also has OEM agreements with Alcatel and Nortel and a co-development
deal with D-Link. 3Com said it has a number of reasons for wanting to
partner with Trapeze rather than develop its own WLAN switch, buy a
startup, or form a basic OEM deal. "We feel that by a partnership
relationship, Trapeze will be focused on maintaining their advantage
in the market," Nixon said. He also thinks that a partnership will
allow 3Com to reach the market faster than if it developed its own
product or bought a startup. A basic OEM relationship would also fall
short of what 3Com was looking for. "If you just go with a straight
OEM relationship, you don't quite get the synergies you get from a
true partnership," he said. The relationship is not exclusive and
Trapeze doesn't expect the co-development aspect of the deal to
interfere with the possibility of OEM deals with other vendors, said
Dan Simone, co-founder and vice president of product management for
Trapeze. Once the companies start working closely to develop products,
they will aim to integrate the wireless switch technology into 3Com's
networking technologies. "We'll get the technologies to work closely
together over wireless so that it's...
