Smile, You're Always on Camera
Smile, You're Always on Camera
09/10/2004 08:58 AMChicago plans advanced surveillance: I don't know
what's more amazing — that Chicago is going to have a network of
2,000 cameras monitoring their city streets, or that the ACLU didn't
flip their lid about it.
The linchpin in the network — paid for with a $5 million grant from
the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and scheduled to be up by
March 2006 — is software designed to detect "suspicious" activity.
For instance, if someone left a suitcase in a stairwell, the
software would engage any camera within range and alert a worker at
the emergency operations center. It would do the same if an individual
rushed up to another and dragged him away. A series of cameras could
track fleeing criminals, and 911 operators would be able to give
police descriptions of suspects.

promotion at a McDonald's in Northport, Alabama. Samantha Robichaud
was born with the Sturge-Weber syndrome that resulted in a purple
birthmark covering her face known as a Port Wine Stain. She joined
McDonald's as a cook in August 2000, "premised upon the assurance that
she would have the opportunity for promotion to management".
Eligibility for a management position entails proficiency in handling
several areas of the restaurant, including the front counter. But she
was removed from the front counter by the manager who countered she
might "make babies cry or scare customers off". After being told
that in January 2001, she kept to herself over the next few workdays,
when the manager eventually informed her that her quality of work had
declined. She quit the next day and filed a complaint with the EEOC.

The Acid2 Test: The Smile and Row
Fourteen
04/18/2005 07:18 AMEven though I consider row 14 to be ambiguous, I went ahead and
modified the Safari code to yield the correct expected behavior. It
isn't so much that the test is wrong as that it is testing unspecified
behavior.
I also noticed thanks to Ian Hickson that the smile was not in fact
rendering correctly. The reason is that Safari will expand floats to
encompass overhanging child floats even when the outer float has
specified a height explicitly in CSS. I changed the code so that this
is now only done when height is auto, and the smile now renders as it
should.
Updated screenshot below. All that I have left is fixing the
object element's behavior in order to completely pass the
test.

Whidbey Beta2 Sign-Off (build #50215.45)
04/18/2005 12:14 AM"Two nights ago we officially signed off on the Beta2 build of Whidbey
(build# 50215.45). It was a long time coming (9 months since Beta1!),
but hopefully people will find it well worth the wait.
Staying focused over such a long time is hard, but our team held up
really well and did a super job shipping a high quality release.
I’m particularly proud of the folks on my team who run our stress
program. They keep a lab of ~1000 machines running 24/7 throughout
the year, and delivered a punishing level of stress load on machines
looking for hard to find production bugs.
We have about 40 different stress variations that we run constantly --
some that do normal web operations (data access, security, output
caching, session management, etc), some that do lots of less typical
things (lots of compilation changes under load, changing configuration
files under load to cause app-domain restarts), and some that do
things that are deliberately downright nasty (memory leaks, AV
crashes, deadlocks -- where the goal is to ensure that ASP.NET
automatically recovers from them). "

Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if

My First C Compiler
My First C Compiler
01/09/2004 09:56 PM
I accidentally googled into this short page on
History
of PC based C-compilers which made me think about my first C
compiler: Aztec C
on Apple II. I was among the first wave of programmers who
cut their teeth on
PCs instead of minicomputers and state-of-the-art in PC software
has risen high enough
to make programming in assembly tedious.
So I just bought a copy of wonderfully thin K&R book which took
only an hour to
read and started writing in C. I really liked it but I wasn't
comfortable with
the idea of using it for production code yet because size and speed
still reign supreme
then. But it was fine for writing tools.
I think the first program I wrote with Aztec C was a double-hires
image editor because
that was when Apple IIc was about to be released and there were no
tools to edit double-hires
images. It was sweet not having to worry about registers and
being able to write
almost English like code (well, it does when compared to assembly
code).
Oh boy, time sure flies.
