LinkedIn Crunch

LinkedIn Crunch 05/15/2004 09:38 PM

All right, I have been neglecting my LinkedIn account because their survival was questionable before and LinkedIn UI was irksome, but I think it's time I started nurturing it.

If I know you and you have a LinkedIn account, send your link requests.  You can find me under, surprise, 'Don Park'.  If you don't know me but I know you (?), you can still invite me.  For example, if you are Bill Gates, you are welcome to invite me.  :-)

As to my LinkedIn profile, I'll get to it someday.  Thanks to Niall Kennedy for the reminder.

119 students who failed courses get group email: 119 kids are failing out of the University of Kansas, and now they all know each other.

The students were notified earlier this week that they were in jeopardy of having their financial aid revoked. The e-mail sent Monday by the Office of Student Financial Aid asked for additional information to determine if they were still eligible for aid.

The e-mail address list included the names of all 119 students, with the result that everyone on it could see the names of all the others.

University Budget Crunch May Curtail

University Budget Crunch May Curtail
Wi-Fi
03/06/2004 01:49 AM
The University of Michigan is facing a budget crunch which may limit the growth of Wi-Fi on campus: While parts of campus are already covered, many departments have included new Wi-Fi networks in their budgets. But because of the university's tight budget those items may not get approved. It seems like many universities are facing budget shortfalls and it would be unfortunate if that slowed down the growth of Wi-Fi on campuses. However, I continue to see news about universities that are building out their Wi-Fi networks so perhaps the University of Michigan's experience doesn't point to a trend....

And that's Not All Folks: Welcome to KDE Enhanced by Feedster

And wait !  There's more.  And this one is just plain damn wonderful.  If you are a user of KDE, Feedster has now been integrated into KDE.  For right now you have to install it yourself but it has already been checked into the CVS tree for the 3.2 release.  Let me quote from the documentation:

Not really eye-candy, but I had to place this somewhere. I have commited a .desktop file for Konqueror's shortcuts to CVS HEAD. If you can't wait for KDE 3.2, you can download the .desktop file here. [_Go_]

Here's how it works:

  1. In a url bar you can now type something like this: rss:Canadian or blog:Canadian or feedster:Canadian
  2. The search is automagically sent to Feedster and you get the results!

Feedster + KDE -- Two Great Tastes that Taste Great Together !

What is KDE ?

In case you're not a part of the Open Source community, you may wonder "What's he saying?"  Or "What's KDE?" Or the ever popular "Is he on crack?".  To quote from the KDE.org site:

KDE is a powerful Open Source graphical desktop environment for Unix workstations. It combines ease of use, contemporary functionality, and outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority of the Unix operating system. [_Go_]

KDE runs on top of Linux / Unix and provides the windows, menus, overall environment, the look and feel, etc.  Please note that is a simplified explanation that doesn't take into account lots of things.  I know its not 100% accurate.

Depending on how you measure it, KDE is the #1 or #2 windowing environment for Linux.  Now do you see why I'm excited?

How this Happened

Now I'd love to tell you this was my idea.  It wasn't.  I'd also love to tell you that this was part of our strategy.  Nope.  Like so many *good* things, it was actually kind of random.  Yesterday out of the blue, I got an IM from a fellow blogger, the.amazing.us / Rob Kaper, who also works on KDE.  He came up with idea, implemented the idea and the committed it to the CVS repository for KDE 3.2 (due year end).  Wow!  And to think, we released Feedster last Thursday, got Slashdotted on Sunday and changed the name on Tuesday.  And now its already embedded in KDE ?

The Thank Yous

Thank you to everyone who pitched in:

  • Rob Kaper who did all the work and really deserves all the credit (Netherlands)
  • Ditesh who tested it (Malaysia)
  • Sooz who pointed out that not everyone knows what KDE is
  • A few folks who I don't have urls for (unfortunately but particular thanks to Macandyed, Jasonlotito and Traumwind)

They just did a segment with me on blogging, and the impact it is having on the political conversation. Unfortunately, the speeches were going on at the same time, so I'm not sure how good the sound quality was, and we had to stop several times, but overall the interview went well. It should be on tomorrow night's NewsHour, which is on at 3PM PST if you're out on the west coast. Of course, this is TV, so who knows if it'll actually air, but I'm hoping it can get in. Either way, it was fun to meet the folks and do the interview. Spreading the gospel, spreading the gospel.

Panel on bl0gs for PR folks

Panel on bl0gs for PR folks 06/05/2005 11:10 PM
The conference to which my tiny, content-free post referred was a get-together of Big Co marketing communication VPs. I was on a panel on blogging with Rebecca Blood, Alan Nelson of CommandPost (who chaired it), and John Hinderaker of Powerline. This panel was the first time in the group's history that they've allowed any proceedings to be on the record. The discussion went well. Rebecca explained what blogs are and aren't. John gave examples — e.g., Rathergate — of how blogs have beat the mainstream media at their own game. I tried to preempt some of the obvious marketers' misunderstandings...

Why the Safari folks are cool

Why the Safari folks are cool 06/17/2005 04:30 PM
I think my favorite folks at Apple are the people who work on WebKit and on Safari.

I got the chance to talk to Jens Alfke and Jessica Kahn a couple days ago: I told them both how Safari in Tiger has been nothing less than a gift. It does three super-important things:

1. It educates people about RSS.

2. It makes it amazingly easy to subscribe to feeds.

3. It allows you to choose a newsreader other than Safari as your default.

I don’t know the inner details of how the decision to support other newsreaders was made, but the people I talked to convinced those who needed convincing that it was the Right Thing to Do.

To them I say: thank you!

P.S. Because I’m sentimental, at the weblogger dinner I suggested to Buzz that we get a photograph of aggregator developers. Somewhere there’s a photograph of me, Jens Alfke, and David Watanabe. I don’t know it it’s been posted yet (since I can barely get online here) but I’ll link to it when it goes up or when I see it.
