The Mozilla Organization on Wednesday released Firefox 1.0.2, a security update to the full version of the Web browser that was released last November. This free upgrade includes three security updates and is recommended for all users. Mac OS X v10.1.x, a G3 266MHz processor (G4 667MHz recommended), 64MB RAM (256MB recommended) and 72MB of free hard drive space are required.

“On July 7 a security vulnerability affecting browsers for the Windows operating system was reported to mozilla.org by Keith McCanless, and was subsequently posted to Full Disclosure, a public security mailing list. On the same day, the Mozilla security team confirmed the report of this security issue affecting the Mozilla Application Suite, Firefox, and Thunderbird and discussed and developed the fix at Bugzilla bug 250180. We have confirmed that the bug affects only users of Microsoft’s Windows operating system. The issue does not affect Linux or Macintosh users. On July 8th, the Mozilla team released a configuration change which resolves this problem by explicitly disabling the use of the shell: external protocol handler. The fix is available in two forms. The first is a small download which will make this configuration adjustment for the user. The second fix is to install the newest full release of each of these products. Instructions on administering these changes can be found below.”

The beta version of the new Firefox / Mozilla website is up, and Ada is asking for feedback. I think it looks and works much better than the current version. However, the text could still use some word smithing. For example mention extensions a little more prominently, maybe with adblock as an example. Also punch up the language: "Never see another ad with Adblock" or "control your music while browsing with FoxyTunes." I sent mail to Blake Ross offering to help with the website, but never got a response. I guess they have enough writers and editors -- I just hope that they put as much work into the information architecture and language of the site as they are the looks of the site....

They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.
