What does
a $350,000 home audio amplifier sound like? Fucking awesome,
apparently, which made me cough a little exhalation of relief as I was
reading Stereophile's review of the Wavac SH-833, the
third-of-a-million dollar amp in question. I don't know from audio,
really, but I know what I like, and that's vacuum tubes, lots of them,
all visible and glowing, and the SH-833 has those in spades. It also
has stuff like direct-heated-triodes and single-ended, class-A tube
monoblock power, but I don't know what the hell those are. But when
Michael Fremer says the SH-833 is the best sounding amplifier he's
ever heard - the bastard got one installed for two months by
the engineers who created it - I'm going to just have to believe him,
because otherwise, I'd have to believe all those stereotypes about
audiophiles being overly susceptible to buying ridiculously overpriced
gear, and then my whole reality would come crashing down around
me.
Oh, and for the budget conscious, there's a $70k bargain version.
But could you ever show your face at the ball wearing that?

sigma chips and 256-bit oversampling, or maybe regale you with stories

lord, does it have Ohms -- but what you really are interested

RoadTrip, a 3-in-1 device that provides an FM transmitter, charger and cradle
for all dock-capable iPod and iPod mini MP3 players. The transmitter
broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a
backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the
charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs
into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its
transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your
computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo.
Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with

(DLO) announced iBoom, a four-speaker boombox system featuring 20
watts per channel, a built-in digital FM radio and a dock that accepts
an iPod or iPod mini. It also features a built-in handle, an auxiliary
input jack and the option to receive power through the included AC
adapter, which also charges the iPod, or six D cell batteries. DLO
expects iBoom to be available in late September and had not updated
its Web site with a product page as MacCentral posted this article.

The Boom Boom Multibox is a waterproof box containing a pair of
battery-powered speakers and a stereo minijack. Just drop your iPod or
discman inside it, plug in the speakers and snap it shut, and you've
got a waterproof sound-system you can hang up in the shower. Next time
I'm stateside, I'm ordering one of these -- I love having music in the

iMmini (no that's not a typo; I checked 8 times) speakers for iPod
mini. It is similar in styling to their InMotion Speakers for iPod,
but about 40% smaller.
"We're delighted that Altec Lansing is bringing out another
breakthrough accessory with the iMmini to provide a great sound system
designed specifically for the incredibly successful iPod mini." said
Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Hardware Product Marketing.
(The press release doesn't mention what industrial plastics were
insufflated before approving the name.)
The iMmini is priced at $129.95 and will be available "late summer"
