Porn Filters For Adults

Porn Filters For Adults 04/16/2004 03:29 AM
The official target market for internet porn filters tends to be parents who want to make sure their children don't run across porn sites on the web (purposely or by accident). However, according to this Salon article, an increasing number of sales are going to adults who want to keep their spouses from accessing porn. There certainly have been plenty of stories about online porn or "online infidelity" leading to the breakup of marriages, but I do wonder whether or not placing a filter on the computer is just a way of whitewashing over a deeper issue. Obviously, if porn is getting in the way of a relationship, then there are bigger issues than just access to porn.

Another Kid Invents An Airport Device
Ignored By Adults
06/22/2005 02:17 AM
Apparently, the adults responsible for airport safety are so busy developing sophis ticated and silly< /a> devices, they're leaving it to kids to come up with the obvious ones. A while back, an Eagle Scout in the US creat ed a shoe scanner that interested people at Chicago's O'Hare airport. Now, a 12-year-old boy in Scotland has invented a device to monitor airport runways and notify pilots of debris that could interfere with landings and cause crashes. Basically, it's a camera mounted on a little platform with wheels, which rolls along the side of the runway. Folks at the British Airport Authority like the idea so much, they're working with the kid (and presumably some adults) to flesh it out into an actual product. Perhaps the young inventor is a precocious wunderkind, but you have to wonder what the adults have been doing all this time. The kid was inspired by the Concorde crash of 2000, which was supposedly caused by debris puncturing one of the plane's tires. Why has it taken five years to come up with a simple idea to prevent more runway disasters?

More Adults Trying To Capitalize On
Video Games For Higher Purpose
04/15/2005 06:44 PM
The media has latched on to this theme and is clinging to it like a bug-eyed Grand Theft Auto addict: using video games to educate the younger generation. Yesterday, it was about teaching kids how to combat world hunger and avoid the perils of the internet. Today, it's about li teracy and cultural sensitivity. First, a teacher in the U.K. has thought of creative use of an existing game -- the Myst series. He takes his young students through a round of Myst play, encouraging them to pretend they're actually inside the scenes and then write down their observations. The second example involves a new game sponsored by the U.S. Army that walks soldiers through everyday situations in Iraq, schooling them on the appropriate ways to interact with locals. Both stories demonstrate the educational potential of hip-looking games. Adults are increasingly catching on to the medium's power to keep the attention of younger people. It also raises a corollary lesson: If the game is going to work in the classroom, it should be innovative and interesting, rather than contrived and pandering.
