Acoustic location was used from mid-WW1 to the early years of WW2
for the passive detection of aircraft by picking up the noise of the
engines. It was rendered obsolete before and during WW2 by the
introduction of radar, which was far more effective.

Although calling it "underwater SMS" might be a
little misleading, the underwater diving computers recently purchased
by the Australian Navy from Nautronix sound extremely useful -- and
use sound to communicate. The Windows-based PCs use both GPS and sonar
to track the position of the divers and underwater object, and can
beam messages from one machine to another via acoustically powered
network, not unlike a telephone modem. The manufacturer has a wide
array of products designed to facilitate communication wireless
underwater, where radio waves are often soaked up and diffused by the
water.

MATT GALLANT -- NovaLogic wants you PC
gamers to get out of 1942 and Vietnam and plunk down $39.99 for their
modern-themed multiplayer combat-fest, and is hoping mentioning
typhoons in the title will... well, I don't know. This "Typhoon
Rising" thing is supposed to sound vaguely martial, I guess.
Things are not looking too good for NovaLogic, though, as last
week's release of a
demo didn't light a fire in the online community the way that
Battlefield 1942's demo did. I think gamers took one look at the
game's promise of 150 player battles with 35 weapons and 29 vehicles
available and thought, "Yeah, right."

-- said to weigh only 45 pounds, and shown in the AP file photo
here.
Snip from Brian Braiker's July 12 Newsweek article (Link):
In February the Marines signed a $1.1 million contract for the
devices; the I Marine Expeditionary Force took them to Fallujah and
the Navy's Fifth Fleet has them in the Persian Gulf. (McSweeney didn't
know if they'd been used.) Miami, Los Angeles, the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey, and the Department of Homeland Security are
considering purchases. With protestors coming to New York and Boston
for the conventions, might we see the first domestic use this summer?
Gruenler hints: "All I can say is there are cities you would
recognize."
And, this from an August 30 AP story from Ellen Simon (
Link):
Earlier this month, the New York Police Department showed off a
machine called the Long Range Acoustic Device, developed for the
military and capable of blasting at an earsplitting 150 decibels -- as
loud as a firecracker, a jet engine taking off or artillery fire at
500 feet, according to the Noise Center at the League for the Hard of
Hearing. The NYPD said it would use the machine to direct crowds to
safety if there's a terrorist attack or remind protesters where
they're allowed to march. Police said they wouldn't use the
earsplitting screeching noise feature at the convention. "It's only to
communicate in large crowds," Inspector Thomas Graham of the police
department's crowd control unit said.
Update 2: Image from indymedia said to be
snapshot from site of protest taking place right now; the LRAD device
is shown mounted atop police car.

06/15/2004 03:32 AMWhen recording in noisy environments, background noise from video
projectors, air conditioning, and traffic can obscure softer voices
and people speaking far from the microphone. This can make it
difficult to hear exactly what was said. Using the Voice Tracker with
SoniClear MeetingPro solves this problem, resulting in improved
recordings and easy transcription of detailed minutes. [PRWEB Jun 15,

09/17/2004 02:13 AMPublic meetings are often recorded to assure accurate and complete

05/15/2004 01:08 AMDavid Ahl's BASIC
Computer Games (1978): I actually have a copy of this book in
paper, dug up in some used book store pile ages ago, but now, you can
revel in its full glories online.
Before there were sprites and polygons and first-person-shooters,
before there were there were teletypes chattering out lines of text.
And there were paper tapes for you to store your work. Right around
the time Richard Nixon was being kicked out of office, I was learning
BASIC by reading the code to some of these games. (We didn't get them
from the book -- they were just floating around on the minicomputer we
timeshared.) "Hammurabi," a sort of primitive, text-only SimCity, was
the one I and my circle of friends latched onto -- and proceeded to
amend. Because all these programs were free and, in the manner of
their time, open source. [Thanks,

It's interesting that Microsoft
AntiSpyware (in beta currently) is written in Visual Basic 6.
Polished consumer-oriented
GUI like that is difficult to code in C++ because of all the
detailing work that has
to be done. Since .NET still hasn't reached primetime as a client
platform, VB6 makes
a lot of sense.
